INTRODUÇÃO
O ano de 2009 foi marcado pelo crescimento do mercado nacional, nomeadamente, da rota Madeira -Lisboa. Este
crescimento foi claramente despoletado pela liberalização do espaço aéreo e consequente aumento da competitividade
da rota. O crescimento do mercado português, em 2009, foi de 11,8% tendo a rota de Lisboa, contribuído com um
crescimento de 17,6%. Para dinamizar a rota de Lisboa, contribuíram igualmente as campanhas de promoção no
mercado nacional, apoiadas pelo Fundo para o Investimento em Promoção Turística.
A quebra generalizada do tráfego nos restantes mercados, que já havia sido sentida no trimestre final de 2008, não
foi travada em 2009. Como consequência, mercados consolidados como o Reino Unido e Alemanha sofreram reduções
significativas, de 27,0% e de 7,3%, respectivamente, fruto da redução de frequências, no caso da fusão First
Choice/Thomsonfly e cancelamento de rotas como foi o caso de East Midlands e Cardiff, bem como quebras nas
taxas de ocupação. No final de 2009 foi declarada a falência da FlyGlobespan, tendo desta forma sido cancelada a
rota de Edimburgo a partir do Aeroporto da Madeira.
Nos restantes mercados, destaca-se o crescimento do mercado francês (em 5,1%) fruto da entrada de uma nova
companhia, a Aigle Azur e do aumento de frequências, pela SATA Internacional. Outros mercados fecharam o ano
com destaque positivo como é o caso da Holanda, com um crescimento de 1,1%, fruto da entrada da companhia
aérea do grupo Tui, Arkefly; da Venezuela, 11,5%, dada a reentrada da Santa Barbara; e da Noruega, 32,8%, com
um crescimento muito significativo da rota de Oslo, face a 2008.
Em 2009, é de realçar a consolidação da Easyjet como segunda maior transportadora para o Aeroporto da Madeira,
tendo já anunciado a terceira frequência diária na rota Madeira-Lisboa. A SATA Internacional também marcou o ano
com a abertura de novas rotas internacionais, como Zurique, Copenhaga e Estocolmo.
INTRODUCTION
The year 2009 was characterized by the growth of the national domestic market namely in the route between Madeira
and Lisbon. This growth was clearly enhanced by the liberalization of air space rules between the island and the
mainland, which increased the route competitiveness. Portugal originated passengers grew 11,7%, having the LisbonMadeira route contributed with a remarkable 17,5% growth. Tourist Promotion Investment Fund campaigns also
helped to increase the number of tourists from Portugal.
Several other markets dropped severely since the last trimester of 2008. Traditional markets like the United Kingdom
and Germany reduced significantly its traffic, -27% and -7,3%, respectively. These drops are due to the reduction
of frequencies after the merger between First Choice and Thomsonfly as well as to the cancellation of routes like
East Midlands and Cardiff. Moreover, the average load factor has decreased. At the very end of 2009, Flyglobespan’s
bankruptcy lead to the loss of the Edinburgh- Madeira route.
Among other markets, French passengers increased by 5,1% due to the new entry of Aigle Azur and due to the
increase of frequencies by SATA International. There were other successful performances like the Netherlands which
grew 1,1% after Arkefly, airline from TUI group, started operating the Amsterdam-Madeira route; Venezuela, with
a 11,5% growth due to the re-entrance of Santa Barbara Airlines flying from Caracas; and finally, Norway registered
a remarkable growth of 32,9%, mainly in the Oslo-Madeira route.
Easyjet has consolidated its position as the second largest airline at Madeira Airport, having announced the launch
of a third daily frequency from Lisbon.
Also in 2009, SATA International has established new international regular flights to Zurich, Copenhagen and
Stockholm.

COMERCIAIS
Os movimentos comerciais registaram um decréscimo de 3,7%. Em
2009 foram registados 21.955 movimentos contra os 22.799
movimentos registados no ano anterior, resultado da redução de
frequências em particular nos segmentos UE Não Schengen, com
uma quebra de 24,6%, e Internacional que registou uma redução de
29,8%.
O único segmento que registou crescimento foi o Schengen Continente,
com um acréscimo de 17,6%, resultante do aumento de frequências
na rota Madeira - Lisboa, com mais duas frequências diárias, operadas
pela Easyjet.

MOVEMENTS
Commercial movements have decreased 3,7%. In 2009 Madeira
Airport summed a total of 21.955 movements against the 22.799

de 6,2% face ao ano anterior.

A SEGUNDA-FEIRA É O DIA DE MAIOR TRÁFEGO
Em média, foram transportados 6.428 passageiros por dia, no Aeroporto da Madeira. O número
médio de passageiros transportados às sextas, sábados e domingos aumentou, quando, por sua vez,
o número médio de passageiros que viajam às segundas-feiras diminui de 13.129 para 10.719. Esta
quebra denota o decréscimo de passageiros vindos do Reino Unido, cujo maior número de frequências
se realizou tradicionalmente às segundas-feiras.
As horas de maior tráfego ocorrem durante a manhã, entre as 9 e as 11 horas.
MONDAYS ARE THE BUSIEST DAYS
On average, 6.248 passengers travelled each day at Madeira Airport. The average number of passengers
travelling at Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays increased, while the average number of passengers
travelling on Mondays decreased from 13.129 to 10.719. This decrease reflects the reduction of
frequencies from the United Kingdom that traditionally occurred at Mondays.
The hours of higher traffic occurred in the morning, from 9 to 11 am.

A TAP transportou em 2009 um total de 871.816 passageiros, contra os 924.687 passageiros transportados em 2008, mantendose a maior transportadora regular para o Aeroporto da Madeira. Segue-se a Easyjet que transportou 326.711 passageiros, superando
largamente os 217.747 passageiros transportados em 2008. Em terceiro lugar no ranking surge a SATA Internacional que transportou
202.332 passageiros em 2009, tendo aumentado o número de passageiros transportados em 2008, que havia sido de 179.790.
No TOP 5 das operadoras regulares, seguem-se a Air Berlin e Tuifly.
TAP AIR PORTUGAL IS STILL THE MAIN SCHEDULED CARRIER FLYING TO MADEIRA
TAP processed a total of 871.816 passengers in 2009, against 924.687 passengers in 2008, keeping its position at the top ranking
of the largest scheduled airlines flying to Madeira. The second position belongs to Easyjet, with 326.711 passengers in 2009,
overcoming the previous 217.747 passengers in 2008. In the third position, SATA International has processed 202.332 passengers
in 2009, having increased the total number of passengers carried in 2008 of 179.790.

Relativamente ao tráfego não regular, a Thomson Airways
assegurou mais de 900 movimentos. É, portanto, a maior

de tráfego não regular, tendo efectuado perto de 300 movimentos
em 2009.

A 5 de Abril de 2009, a companhia aérea ArkeFly realizou o voo inaugural da rota entre
Amesterdão e a Madeira. Esta nova operação charter mantém uma frequência semanal
no Verão IATA.

5 th April. These charter flights are available once a week all summer.
A Companhia aérea venezuelana Santa Barbara reiniciou as ligações aéreas regulares
entre Caracas e a Ilha da Madeira a 6 de Junho.
Santa Barbara Airlines, a Venezuelan airline, has restarted operating a regular flight from
Caracas to Madeira, since the past June 6th.
No final de Agosto de 2009, a companhia aérea dinamarquesa Cimber Sterling começou
a operar na rota entre Copenhaga e a Madeira, com uma frequência semanal.

entre Paris Orly e a Madeira. A companhia iniciou a operação regular a 24 de Outubro,
com uma frequência semanal, tendo anunciado a introdução de uma frequência adicional
para o Verão IATA de 2010.
