WAGNER MALTA TAVARES São Paulo, Brazil 1964 STATEMENT WMT has been developing his work since 1998. Unbound by any specific media or artistic language, the artist works with video, sculpture, photography, sketching and installation. Wagner often makes use of science fiction as a universe of possibilities for searching for the contemporary man’s identity. There is something common to everyone in all human adventure at last we can’t deny some similarity among the adventures of Jason and the Argonauts and the space ship Enterprise and Ulysses in his trip back to Itaca. His works make visible essential aspects through a primal form and its relationship with space. He looks for signs of existence through sculptures and their projectionism order to show how space can be occupied and what becomes different after their materialization. “I think of my works as a portrait of the human condition, which gives them a kind of interiority. That is why many times my thoughts about a new work emerges from a drawing, reading a book, music listenning or even a Assyrian relief – after all, these things are each consequences of human existence on earth”. Many WMT’s woks have a strong connection to pop culture: comics, cartoons or super heroes films with heroes of the classical culture. More than believe in the art’s evoltive and educative profile, the artist looks for remains, for vestiges of what must be perennial in the world through art in all its aspects of criation. He believes it is the best device to dialogue with something.
