4. Area of scientific activit
Landscape Ecology, Sustainable Land Use Planning, Sustainable Forestry Management.
After graduating in forestry science (in 1998) I spent the first seven years (1998-2004) of my professional
career working as a technician in a non-governmental organization (AC EB, Portugal) where I had the
opportunity to participate in several research projects related with communal land management (baldios).
I hold a Masters degree on rural development (1999-2003). My masters thesis emphasis the importance on
putting into place participatory approaches for rural development activities and examines the type of
participatory approaches occurring at the communal land management level.
Throughout my PhD I conducted research on sustainable forestry management at multiple scales. The
research I have being conducting emphasizes the provision of ecological based goods and services provided
by the environment and the ways those environmental services may help to create (or reinforce) innovative
institutional governance frameworks aiming at developing strategies for a transition to a more sustainable
state.
At the present, I am particularly keen in investigating the explicit effects of land cover patterns on the
provision of public goods which are based on the social demand of different user groups. In the research I
have been conducting landscape ecology theories, tools and methods are used for informing sustainable land
use planning approaches. Above all, the work I have been conducting focuses on the science-policy interface.
5. Present research interest
Domain of specialization
The research I have been conducting adopts a multi-scale approach to investigate mechanisms for the
implementation of "sustainable landscapes". It uses GIS techniques together with quantitative (e.g. statistical
analysis) and qualitative approaches (e.g. focus groups meetings, workshops), aided by visual tools such as
photographs. I have been working on the implementation of participatory approaches to instill sustainable
development transitions.
Current research interests
My main research topics are landscape analysis, land cover/ land use characterization for sustainable
landscape planning and management. I am particularly interested in investigating the explicit effects of
spatial land cover patterns on the provision of goods and services at multiple geographical scales. I am also
very interested in testing new methods able to reconcile multiple stakeholders demands and provision of
ecosystem services.

2 - Post doctoral researcher at the University of East Anglia, School of Environmental Sciences. I worked on a
European sponsored project “RUFUS-Rural Future Networks” with Professor Andrew Lovett. the RUFUS project
was sponsored by the 7th framework, EU. The project used an interdisciplinary methodology which
encouraged a confrontation of the quantitative approach with more qualitative social and policy approaches.
The top-down and largely quantitative analysis of rural dynamics was combined with bottom-up and largely
qualitative experiences of stakeholders. An integrated typology of rural areas in Europe was built combining
the bottom-up and top-down perspectives and it was tested through cases studies. I particularly worked on
developing scenarios and visualizations in C astro Laboreiro parish- Melgaço municipality (Work package 5).
3- Postdoc researcher at IC AAM, Évora University working on several research projects which were
coordinated by Professor Maria Teresa Pinto-C orreia (2010):
ROSA project (C ontributions to identify the social demand in the alentejo landscapes). . We are running a
questionnaire survey in 10 municipalities in Alentejo area in order to gather public preferences. We inquire
farmers, local inhabitants, hunters,neo-rurals, second house owners, tourists and eco-turists in order to know
more about their multiple preferences in the Alentejo landscape. ROSA is sponsored by the Ministry of
Agriculture and C C DR-Al.
FRAGARIA project (Downscaling of the European Landscape Indicator) we are developing and testing the
performance of several indicators at different spatial scales (from the European to the municipality) in oder to
develop an composite indicator for the social appreciation of the landscape.
