Subordinating Conjunctions
As orações subordinadas temporais são introduzidas
pelas seguintes conjunções:
•When (quando) – expressa ideia do momento em
que ocorreu a ação.
When we were in Dublin, we visited the Irish
National Gallery.
•While (enquanto) – expressa ideia de duração, de
simultaneidade.
The phone rang while I was having a bath.
•As (quando, enquanto) – pode ser usado com o
passado simples ou com o past continuous.
As you came in, my mother got scared.
I fell in the street as I was running home.

• As long as (todo o tempo) – expressa ideia de um
período completo.
I will stay here as long as necessary.
• As soon as ( assim que) – expressa ideia de um
momento específico ou antes dele.
I came as soon as I heard the news.
• Before (antes) – expressa ideia de um momento
anterior no tempo.
Come and see me before you leave for
Europe.
• After (depois) expressa ideia de um momento
posterior no tempo.
After I arrived, I saw them.
I saw them after I arrived.

• By the time (assim que) – também expressa ideia de
algo ocorrendo antes um momento específico no
tempo.
We will have finished all the work by the time he
arrives.
Since (desde) pode ser usado como preposição e como
conjunção (quando liga duas orações).
Peter has been in Brazil since last week.
Peter has been in Brazil since he got married.
Until / till (até que) expressa ideia de “até determinado
momento”.
You cannot leave until your work is finished.

As orações subordinadas causais são introduzidas
pelas conjunções because, as e since, ainda que
empregadas de maneira diferente.
•Because (porque) expressa ideia de motivo, razão.
‘Why are you so sad?’ ‘Because I lost my
little
dog.’
He didn’t do his homework because he was tired.
•Since ou as (porque, já que, como) são frequentemente
usados no início da oração.
Since / As you have a headache, I will give you
a painkiller.
I will give you a painkiller because you have a
headache.

f) I’ve run out of food. I’ll get some.
