Biography:
Mark Hopkins, P.E. is a senior fire protection engineer with Hughes
Associates, Inc. in Baltimore, MD. He has been conducting corrosion
investigations for approximately 5 years and has extensive experience with
the installation, design, and evaluation of sprinkler systems. Mark is the
author of the Focus on Fire Protection column published by the American
Society of Plumbing Engineers periodical Plumbing Systems & Design. He is
a member of NFPA, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and NACE
International. Mark holds both a bachelor-of-science degree and masters-ofscience degree in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland
at College Park.
Corrosion in Dry Pipe and Preaction Sprinkler Systems
This presentation identifies design limitations and installation pitfalls which
influence corrosion in dry pipe and preaction sprinkler systems. The
presentation identifies how corrosion is commonly detected and why it is a
problem. The basic forms of corrosion, its affects on system reliability, and
failure mode concepts will be described. The basic framework for conducting
corrosion investigations, factors for consideration in determining whether to
salvage or replace a system, and possible corrosion management strategies
will also be discussed. A case study of an investigation conducted at a
museum facility will be shared.
