Over the last two decades, with the
emergence of a new generation of artists,
Angolan visual arts have experienced a
renewal and an aesthetic mutation.
Without aiming to make a complete break
with the past, this new generation of
artists, of which Hildebrando Melo is one,
has given us works of great richness, in that
they do not confine themselves to mere
aesthetic observation and comprehension
of the everyday. Hildebrando Melo’s artistic
creations are a fusion of “looking deep into
the reality that surrounds us” with personal
experiences and cultural influences from
the contemporary world. Hildebrando
Melo interprets and explores the mysticism
and soul of Africa as few have done,
transposing onto canvas with tremendous
elegance both aggression and balance,
which gives his production an unparallelled
symbolic force and universality.
In his artistic production this painter
displays a wealth of irreverence, persistence,
imagination and creativity. His art is in itself
a process of construction of his “ego” and
his critical eye on everything around him.
“Vírus” is a collection that proves this point.
The artist sets out to portray human inquiry
into life and existence. It is the contribution
of someone who is not content with
commonplaces; someone who carves his
own path in the world.

Nas duas últimas décadas as artes plásticas
angolanas têm registado um período de
renovação e de mutação estética através
do surgimento de uma nova geração de
artistas.
Não pretendendo fazer uma ruptura com
o passado, esta nova geração de artísticas,
da qual faz parte Hildebrando Melo, temnos brindado com obras muito ricas, na
medida em que, não se limita a uma mera
observação e compreensão estética do
quotidiano. As suas criações artísticas
são uma fusão do “olhar profundo sobre
a realidade que nos rodeia”, com as
suas vivências e influências culturais do
mundo contemporâneo. Hildebrando
Melo interpreta e explora o misticismo e a
alma de África como poucos, transpondo
para a tela em simultâneo e com enorme
elegância a agressividade e o equilíbrio, o
que torna a sua produção numa simbologia
impar e de carácter universal.
Hildebrando Melo é um artista irreverente,
persistente, imaginativo e muito criativo
na sua produção artística. A sua arte é
em si mesmo um processo de construção
do seu “ego” e do seu olhar crítico sobre
tudo o que o rodeia. A colecção “Vírus” é
disso prova. O artista procura retratar as
interrogações humanas sobre a existência
da vida. É o contributo próprio de quem
não se conforma com os lugares comuns,
que rasga o seu próprio caminho no
mundo.

The work of Hildebrand Melo occupies
an interstitial space between fiction and
reality. The artist explores concepts and
ideas from diverse backgrounds, from
philosophy to science and transforms
them. This transformation is placing
Hildebrand Melo in a prominent place in
the Angolan art scene since the artist has
dismissed in its aesthetic approach a set of
common places of Angolan Art, not girding
even thematic or chromaticallyin themes
called Africans. However, the reality that
surrounds him feeding his creativity.
A obra de Hildebrando Melo ocupa um
espaço intersticial entre a ficção e o real.
O artista explora conceitos e ideias de
diversas origens, da filosofia à ciência e
transforma-os. Esta transformação é que
coloca Hildebrando Melo num lugar de
destaque na cena artística angolana pois
o artista tem rejeitado na sua abordagem
estética um conjunto de lugares comuns
da arte angolana, não se cingindo nem
temática nem cromaticamente aos temas
ditos africanos. Contudo, a realidade que o
rodeia alimenta a sua criatividade.
The themes that Hildebrand has developed
in his work are in some way connected
to the city of Luanda, whether it be the
candongueiro, which the iconography
refers to a city or aesthetic lines of the
Body and Soul series that look out to the
churches of the city a narrative line. In
this series, Virus, the artist takes us in the
first instance for science, the virus that
surrounds us, but the reading can also be
more symbolic and touch on the human
condition or the human aspect in a rapidly
growing city like Luanda.
Os temas que Hildebrando tem
desenvolvido na sua obra estão de
alguma maneira ligados à cidade de
Luanda, quer seja o candongueiro, cuja
iconografia remete para uma estética da
cidade ou as linhas da série Corpo e Alma
que fora buscar às igrejas da cidade uma
linha narrativa. Nesta série Vírus o artista
remete-nos num primeiro momento para
a ciência, o vírus que nos rodeia, mas a
leitura pode ser também mais simbólica
e aflorar à condição humana ou ainda na
vertente humana numa cidade em rápido
crescimento como Luanda.
The ability to transmute the virus is
celebrated in this series by a set of color
choices that erase the scientific gaze and
expose us to the contexts and / or allow
us to question these contexts. The line
of the artist remain in this abstract work
offering to the viewer multiple possibilities
of interpretation. This virus appears as
an organic element to be transmuted
to a machine, in a man, into a being in a
relationship with the context, and this
is also changing. And perhaps this is the
main theme of this series, the change or
the ability to change and adapt the man to
various contexts.
A capacidade de transmutação do vírus é
celebrada nesta série através de um conjunto
de escolhas cromáticas que lhe retiram o
olhar científico e nos expõem a contextos e/
ou nos permitem questionar esses contextos.
O traço do artista mantêm-se neste trabalho
abstracto oferecendo ao observador
possibilidades várias de interpretação. Este
vírus, como elemento orgânico parece
transmutar-se em máquina, em homem,
num ser em relação com o contexto, sendo
que este está também em mutação. E talvez
seja este o tema principal desta série, a
mudança ou a capacidade de mudança e
adaptação do homem a vários contextos.
Once again Luanda as historical and
geographical space is offered as
background for his work. A mutating
city that it relates the memory of the
transformations of the country and the
need to adapt to adversity of a people.
This human perspective and think to
characterize the social and historical
processes of Angola has been recurrent in
the work of Hildebrand and offers to the
viewer a series of questions for discussion.
The proposal is an open and honest
reading of a country, a city of history and
memory.

Mais uma vez Luanda, como espaço
geográfico e histórico oferece-se como
pano de fundo para a sua obra. Uma cidade
em mutação e em que convive a memória
das transformações do país e a necessidade
de adaptação de um povo à adversidade.
Esta perspectiva humana de caracterizar e
pensar os processos sociais e históricos de
Angola tem sido recorrente no trabalho de
Hildebrando e oferece ao observador uma
série de questões à discussão. A proposta é
uma leitura aberta e franca de um país, de
uma cidade, da história e da memória.

VÍRUS PROJECTO
As a child in Angola, I used to build roads
of sand, and I would play with toy cars
and insects that I captured. I would create
stories out of these things. As an adult, I am
still like that child, Hildebrando.
Eu sou a personificação duma criança
chamada Hildebrando, que na minha
meninice construía estradas de areia para
me entreter com os meus carrinhos e os
insectos que apanhava. E fazia despoletar
toda uma narração à volta dessa
brincadeira.
These things grew out of the state of terror
and the war in my country. I lived in a city
named Lobito, and when I was five years
old, I remember seeing a dead body, spread
on the ground at the Catumbela airport. I
was only a child, traveling to Europe, but
the memory has always stayed with me. It
is like a wave that crashes against the shore
and recedes.
From that tender age, I have questioned
existence. Where do life and nature come
from? I have always had a desire to see
God. I wondered what he would look like,
how he would be.
One of my artistic pursuits is to wrestle
with these questions. It is something I want
to manifest in my art, but I don’t know
what it is, exactly. I feel close to an answer
sometimes, but it is just out of reach,
amorphous.
So I dedicate myself to this search. I have
imposed on myself a mission to ask where
life starts. I paint, practice, experiment,
discover. I want to explore this: What is the
origin of everything?
Teve grande relevância a guerra e o estado
de terror que as pessoas viviam na minha
cidade, quando fui para a Europa com
cinco anos recordo-me dos cadáveres
espalhados à chegada do aeroporto, estes
acontecimentos estão sempre presentes
na minha memória, são como ondas, vão
e vêm.
Desde tenra idade que questiono a
existência, apoquenta-me a ideia de onde
tudo surge; a vida; a natureza. Sempre tive
o desejo querer ver Deus! Qual será a sua
fisionomia, a sua característica? É esta uma
das procuras no trabalho que desenvolvo,
depois da expressão o que vem?
Algo se manifesta mas não sei bem o que
é, fico preso nisso, às vezes expande, às
vezes fica amorfo. Então dedico-me a isto
e impus-me a missão de questionar aonde
nasce a vida; pintar; praticar; experimentar;
experienciar; a origem de todas as coisas.
I want to go farther into the human
imagination, where it has never reached
before. I want to discover new stops in the
mind’s landscape. My intuition leads me
to cross boundaries, to travel farther with
each work I make.
I like to analyze the existence and observe
the behaviour of all species. I like to treat
painting as a living organism, too. It is
like a virus that grows, mutates, divides,
disintegrates, and aggregates in scientific
terms. A virus needs proteins to survive.
My paintings are hungry. They feed on
disease, natural disasters, and God.
Quero tentar ir para além do imaginário
humano, aonde o ser humano em
pensamento ainda não chegou ou nunca
esteve, a descoberta de novas paragens,
um sítio novo na mente. A intuição para
atravessar fronteiras superar-me a cada
trabalho, gosto de tratar a pintura como
um organismo vivo, como um vírus que
cresce, muta-se, divide-se, desintegra-se,
agrega-se, e que em termos científicos
se hospeda. Gosto de analisar a condição
humana, de observar a espécie humana,
mas na condição de vírus que precisa de
proteínas para viver, o confronto com a
terra pela busca de alimentos. A fome, as
doenças, os desastres naturais, Deus.
