Course Objectives
Portuguese 216 is the first semester of an intensive two-course sequence designed to introduce Spanish speakers to the Portuguese language and
Brazilian culture. In this course you will develop your ability to communicate satisfactorily in Portuguese in everyday practical situations, and you
will practice reading and writing in Portuguese.
Proficiency Goals
By the end of PORT 216, you should be able to
• provide basic personal information
• describe people, places, and things
• talk about your daily routine and ongoing actions and events
• talk about past events
Class preparation and participation. Workbook
Please read over the assigned pages before class and come to class prepared to follow the presentation and participate in the practice of the new
material. It is important that you participate actively in class work. The assigned workbook (caderno) pages are due the class day after we finish
the corresponding lesson. Please remove these from the book and staple them together.
Quizzes and exams
There will be frequent quizzes—approximately one per week—and the lowest quiz grade will be dropped. If you miss a quiz for any reason, it can
be the dropped grade. There will be two exams during the semester. The final exam will be comprehensive and will be held during finals week—
please do not make any travel plans before the date of the final is announced.
Attendance
Regular class attendance is essential for successful completion of the course. More than two unexcused absences will affect your class
participation grade. Keep in mind that on the days you miss you will not be able to get credit for class participation, and you will miss the material
presented and practiced in class.
Additional language practice
This is an intensive introduction to Portuguese, we have little time to practice all the material included in the syllabus. It is important that you seek
opportunities to speak Portuguese outside class with your colleagues and native speakers. It is strongly recommend that you participate in the batepapos (informal conversation groups)—time and place to be announced in class. Attendance and participation in the bate-papos will also earn you

extra credit for the class participation portion of your grade. It is also highly recommended that you seek other opportunities to listen to authentic
Portuguese as often as possible. Watch Brazilian and Portuguese movies, listen to music, participate in the ELI Language Partner Program.
