Zoobic Safari opens zipline ride through tiger den
BY MHIKE R. CIGARAL
SUBIC BAY FREEPORT –
Zoobic Safari, a theme park in
the Subic Bay Freeport that is
famous for its menagerie of tigers and other wild animals,
has opened a zipline ride that
takes you over a den of tigers.
Aptly named as Kamikazoo,
the heart-stopping 130-meter
ride puts tourists inside a metal
capsule hanging on a zipline
that slowly makes its way above
a den of tigers.
The extraordinary ride, apparently the first of its kind in
the world, opened here on Sat-
urday as the latest attraction in
the popular park.
Engr. Robert Yupangco told
Headline Gitnang Luzon, the
metal capsule has a capacity
of eight persons and will have
dressed chickens dangling on
the side of the cage to attract
the tigers. From a height of 10
meters, the capsule will drop
down to about one foot from the
ground.
“Watch as the tigers try to eat
the chicken from the sides of the
cage. This will test the courage
of those taking the ride,” Yupangco pointed out.
Aside from the zipline,
Zoobic Safari has other attractions that will keep tourists occupied and entertained during
their stay here, like the famous
Tiger Safari where visitors
ride a truck with metal grilles
around an enclosure filled with
tigers.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Bird lovers and hobbyists have another reason to visit this Freeport
with the opening of the Magaul Bird Park, Jest
Camp’s newest tourism attraction, which offers the
world’s first half-a-thousand birds show.
“Wings of the World,” produced by an all-Filipino team, unveils the majestic charm of birds found
in forests around the world—from Africa to South
America, to China and the Philippines.
Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Regulatory Group OIC Ruel John Kabigting, who was
guest of honor during the park opening, lauded
the newest addition to Central Luzon’s best tourist
destination, saying this will attract more tourists,
especially bird lovers.
“Magaul Bird Park is not only a park to go to in
Subic, but a place to enjoy and learn the importance
of caring for our environment, especially our forests,” Kabigting told Headline Gitnang Luzon.
He added that Wings of the World is an ambitious project.
“This is the first in the world and no other theme
park has ever done this before,” Kabigting noted.
For her part, Katrina Lacap, general manager of
Magaul Bird Park, affirmed that the Wings of the
World show presents an ensemble of “our bird buddies” with the underlying theme of environmental
protection.
“For the first time ever in the world, Wings of
the World’s grand finale will bring half a thousand
birds on stage from all directions of the Alula Amphitheater here at the park,” Lacap told the opening
day visitors.
Lacap said the show will feature hundreds of pigeons that circle the audience on their seats, hundreds of guinea fowls that descend towards the
stage, as well as majestic hornbills and macaws
that fly over them.
She added that the show will make the audience
look up in awe as the giant wings of white-bellied
sea eagle cast a shadow over them.•

Never stop learning
THE graduation season is at
its end. Thousands have graduated from college, and are now
in the process of looking for jobs.
We hope a lot of them would land
their dream jobs.
Some may have already been
hired. Sadly, a number of them
won’t be as lucky.
It’s the same situation, year after
year. But according to Senate President Franklin M. Drilon – who
will grace the graduation rites of
the Pampanga State Agricultural University today – graduates
should never stop learning and
never stop pursuing excellence.
In an advanced statement,
Drilon, who is actually a product of the country’s public school
system from grade school to law
school, said mediocrity should not
be embraced in exchange for temporary convenience and rewards.

WTH’s a ‘yaya meal’?
ND just look at how times
have really changed. Now, we
have the so-called “yaya meal”
which is being served in one of the
luxury membership resorts in the
country. At first thought, one may
just simply find it whimsical while
some may even regard it as nonsensical. But looking at it through
different perspectives, this kind of
service translates
to a great deal of
urgency and seriousness which we

wanted to order the same serving was allegedly “prevented” by the waiter to have the same meal saying that
what she wanted was a “yaya meal.”
Outright, this is indeed a clear and
obvious discrimination and inequality being practiced in the said resort.
Akbayan Representative Ibarra Gutierrez said this procedure “highlights
deep-seated nature of economic ine-

in the country.”
In the first place, those who can

General Edward King
was forced to surrender
to the Japanese
A
t dawn of April 9, 1942, Major General Edward P. King, commander of the Bataan forces, was forced to surrender together with his
men when the Filipino and American soldiers could
no longer defend the Bataan peninsula from the invasion of Japanese troops.
The surrendered

forces were forced
at

to
march under the
tropical hot sun
from Bataan to San
Fernando, Pampanga, and then taken
by rail to Camp
O’Donnel in Tarlac.
Those who could
not make it because
of physical weakness were shot or
bayoneted to death.
The event was
indeed so inhuman that it was called the “Death
March” and marked the beginning of total Japanese
Occupation of the Philippines during the Second
World War.
Despite the travails of defeat, most of the captured soldiers stood strong and heroes emerged from
the event. The surrender was only temporary.
Eventually, American and Filipino liberation
forces retook the Bataan peninsula on February 8,
1945.
The nation marks “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of
Valor) on April 9 of every year to highlight the valor
and heroism of the Filipino and American soldiers
who fought in the Philippines during World War II.
Formerly called “Bataan Day” or “Fall of Bataan,”
the celebration was changed to “Day of Valor” and
made a national public holiday under Letter of Instruction No. 1087 issued on November 26, 1980 by
then President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
Executive Order No. 203, dated June 30, 1987,
further declared April 9 of each year as “Araw Ng
Kagitingan” to pay tribute to the heroes of Bataan,
Corregidor and Bessang Pass. •

First astronauts
introduced
n April 9, 1959, the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) introduces America’s first astronauts to the press: Scott Carpenter,
L. Gordon Cooper Jr., John H. Glenn Jr., Virgil “Gus”
Grissom, Walter Schirra Jr., Alan Shepard Jr., and Donald Slayton. The seven men, all military test pilots, were
carefully selected from a group of 32 candidates to take
part in Project Mercury, America’s first manned space
program. NASA planned to begin manned orbital flights
in 1961.
On October 4, 1957, the USSR scored the first victory of the “space race” when it successfully launched the
world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik, into Earth’s orbit. In response, the United States consolidated its various military and civilian space efforts into NASA, which
dedicated itself to beating the Soviets to manned space
flight. In January 1959, NASA began the astronaut selection procedure, screening the records of 508 military
test pilots and choosing 110 candidates. This number was
arbitrarily divided into three groups, and the first two
groups reported to Washington. Because of the high rate
of volunteering, the third group was eliminated. Of the
62 pilots who volunteered, six were found to have grown
too tall since their last medical examination. An initial
battery of written tests, interviews, and medical history
reviews further reduced the number of candidates to 36.
After learning of the extreme physical and mental tests
planned for them, four of these men dropped out.
The final 32 candidates traveled to the Lovelace Clinic
in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they underwent exhaustive medical and psychological examinations. The
men proved so healthy, however, that only one candidate
was eliminated. The remaining 31 candidates then traveled to the Wright Aeromedical Laboratory in Dayton,
Ohio, where they underwent the most grueling part of
history... Page 7

The Buzz bows out K
Interactive showbiz talk show
N
AMAALAM na ang The
Buzz pagkatapos ng 16 taong
pagsasaere
every Sunday. Ito ang inanunsyo ng programa last
Sunday na siya ring huli
nilang episode.
Ang isa sa hosts na si Boy
Abunda ang nagbigay ng
paliwanag at detalye kung
bakit pansamantala munang mawawala ang show
na umani rin ng napakaraming parangal for the
past 16 years.
hindi ako magkukunwari that I’m
not hurting, I’m not bleeding inside
because I am,” pahayag ni Kuya Boy.
“It’s very, very painful,” he added.
show.
“Nagbago na ho kami. ’Yung aming writers noon, ngayon ay head
writers na, ’yung aming head writers, creative managers na po. ’Yung
aming executive producers ay business unit
heads na, head na ng
ibang department dito
sa ABS-CBN.
“We have evolved
into different people
today. Naiba na po ang
maraming bagay. Nagbago na po ang mga tao
sa likod ng The Buzz,”
paliwanag ni Kuya Boy.
Maging ang viewers
daw ay nagbago na rin,
gayundin ang form of
communication ng mga tao. Kung
dati ay personal na nanliligaw ang
mga lalaki, ngayon ay pwede na sa
text. Ang mga OFW ay may Skype
na para makausap ang kanilang
pamilya.
We want to take a few steps backward para makita namin nang mas
ho kayo. Para sa aming pagbabalik
ay isang malaking pagbabago na ang
inyong aabangan.”
Sa huli ay nangako si Kuya Boy
na mawala man ngayon ang The
Buzz, sila ay muling magbabalik
dahil ang talk show genre is here to
stay at hindi raw pwedeng mamatay.
Sa ngayon ay hindi pa raw niya
alam kung magbabalik sila as a
group or individually.
nilang lahat.
“That the best way is to stop today and then, come back strong and
be the best of what we can be,” pahayag pa ng King of Talk.
“After more than 15 years of unparalleled credibility as Philippine
television’s leading showbiz-oriented talk show, The Buzz takes a break
after its April 5, 2015 episode. The
program recognizes the evolution in
showbiz news reporting, and to cope
with it, The Buzz deems it a necessary step to reinvent to start anew.
Showbiz news will never die. The
showbiz talk genre remains.
“Since the program began, The
Buzz has gained the authority of being the premiere source of truthful
and balanced entertainment news
for the Filipino audience worldwide.
As the program bids farewell for
now, The Buzz would like to thank
its loyal viewers for the support they
have given the show in its entire run.
See you again soon,” ang nakasaad
sa official statement.•
Kid Kulafu muna si Pacquiao bago naging Pacman
H
INDI pa rin halos makapaniwala ang award-winning
teen actor at “Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman”
actor.
kapatid.
Dionisia.
Si Manny ay pang-apat sa
kanilang limang magkakapatid.
May dalawang anak ang kanyang
ina sa una nitong asawa at tatlo
naman silang magkakapatid sa
kanilang amang si Rosalio Pacquiao.
Bukod sa pamumulot ng mga
bote, naisipan ni Manny ang
sumali sa mga amateur boxing
sa kanilang probinsiya bagay na
hindi gusto ng kanyang ina. Pero
palihim pa rin siyang sumasabak
at siya’y nananalo. Ang kaunting
premyo ay naibibigay niya sa kanyang ina.
Dahil hindi sapat ang kinikita
ni Manny sa pamumulot ng mga
Kulafu bottles sa probinsiya, nagdesisyon siyang makipagsapalaran
sa Maynila nung siya’y katorse anyos pa lamang at naranasan niyang
tumira sa kalye hanggang sa siya’y
mapabilang sa Philippine National
Amateur Boxing Team kung saan
libre ang kanyang room and board.
Come May 3 (sa Pilipinas), isang
historical fight ang susuungin
ng Pambansang Kamao laban sa
Amerikanong boxing champ na si
Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Two weeks before the muchanticipated fight of the century,
ipapalabas ng Star Cinema ang
“Kid Kulafu,” isang bio-pic movie
na naglalahad at magpapakita ng
buhay ni Manny nung siya’y bata
pa at kung paano nagsimula ang
kanyang boxing career sa kanilang
probinsiya. Isa itong inspirational
Manny credits his uncle Sardo
Dapidran (played in the movie by
Manny himself is so proud of
the movie “Kid Kulafu” produced
and directed by Paul Soriano, ang
soon-to-be-groom ng Multi-Media
star na si Toni Gonzaga.•

inunggaban daw agad
ni Chynna Ortaleza ang
role na tomboy sa bagong
serye ng GMA 7.
“I’ve played the role of a
lesbian before, but in a movie
with Nora Aunor, ‘Hustisya’,”
she says. “Mukhang babae pa
rin ako roon. This time, sa role
ko as Batchi, mukhang lalaki
talaga ako. Sa pagkilos, sa pananamit, sa lahat, kailangang
lalaki ang projection ko. Kaya
nga, pinagupitan ko na nang
maikling-maikli ang buhok ko
in preparation for the start of
our taping. Puwede namang
dayain at mag-wig na lang ako,
pero ayoko, gusto ko ‘yung totoo
lahat ng gagawin. With my
new hairstyle, ang dami nang
nagsabing ang pogi ko raw.”
She took an immersion program with the lesbian group
Woman on Top to make sure
she’s prepared for the role. She
took the immersion program
with two other actresses who’ll
also do lesbian roles, Katrina
Halili and Glaiza de Castro.
They were even invited to the
group’s very exclusive event at
Oasis Bar after their immersion program.
“I’m also banking on our
director, Dominic Zapata, to
help me out in my interpretation of my role para sigurado
akong magawa ko ito nang
tama.
from the leads Marian Rivera,
Glaiza, Katrina, Luis Alandy,
Mike Tan hanggang sa support
like Tita Gloria Romero and
Tito Al Tantay. To say that I’m
excited with this project will be
an understatement.”
Chynna also plans to cultivate a career behind the camera. She has worked as assistant director to the music video
of new singer Rye Sarmiento
for a song called “Umay”.•

GOV’S BEST PRACTICES... from Page 1
The group, led by Retired Judge
Ricardo Agapito of the Regional Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines, attended the
first-ever Regional Senior Citizens’
Congress held at the Oxford Hotel
here yesterday. They came from the
provinces of Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales
and Pampanga.
During the event, Board Member
and Chairman of the Committee on
Health Crisostomo Garbo presented
the province’s best practices on social services for senior citizens, particularly the passing of Ordinance
647 or the “Enactment of the Senior
Citizens Code of the Province of
Pampanga.”
HISTORY... from Page 5
Under said ordinance, senior
citizens of Pampanga, specifically
those aged 100 years and above, are
to receive a cash incentive worth
P100,000 in recognition of their
invaluable contribution to the province’s success today.
Aside from this, the Capitol has
alloted a P1,000 monthly pension
for indigent senior citizens that are
bedridden, for the purchase of their
medicines and other needs.
Also, the provincial government
grants burial assistance of not less
than P5,000 for disadvantaged senior citizens. Such benefits are facilitated through the Provincial Council
for the Welfare and Protection of
Senior Citizens chaired by Governor
Pineda.
Zambales Governor Hermogenes
Ebdane Jr. also noted Governor
Pineda’s dedication and concern for
the elderly citizens of Pampanga and
the whole Central Luzon.
According to Ebdane, the province of Zambales now holds regular medical missions providing free
surgery for indigents as inspired by
Governor Pineda’s consistent health
programs.
The event was also attended by
Board Member Cherry Manalo, municipal and city mayors and vice
mayors, FSCAP and Office of the
Senior Citizens Affairs leaders, and
Capitol department heads and employees.•

Drilon, a product of the country’s public school system from grade

Drilon finished basic education
from the Baluarte Elementary School
in Molo, Iloilo City, his high school

The Senate leader, who was a

He said: “I hope that our youth will

Treating a person by classifying his social class

to discriminate a human being based on his appearance or situation in life. In the eyes of God

I thought Filipinos are more civilized nowadays. I was wrong. There are still people like the

include Balesin resort in my bucket list as one of
the places I would like to visit in the near future.
