Mrs. Laura Cooper 6th grade ELA Room 616 Welcome to English Language Arts! We are going to have a fabulous year! In sixth grade, students have a separate class for reading, so we focus on writing and grammar in ELA. Of course, writing and grammar cannot be learned without reading, so we will be doing that too! See below for classroom information. Contact Information: 512-841-8668 [email protected] Conference Period: 1:05 – 1:48 (6th period – Team conference time) 1:53 – 2:39 (7th period) All parent conferences are scheduled through Mr. Johnson Classroom Procedures: Students will copy our daily assignments into their agendas. There will not be regular homework assignments. When we do have homework, students will note that in their agenda books. Student notebooks will stay in the classroom. *NOTE* Students will purchase their English notebook from Mrs. Cooper for $5. I will collect for these for the first 3 weeks of school. Please put money in an envelope with your child’s name and Mrs. Cooper on the outside. Grading Policy: The English Department has the following grading policy: Daily grades/homework/participation – count once Quiz grades/in-class assignments/group work - count twice Major grades/tests/final copy of papers – count three times Website: http://www.gmstigers.com/ Look under “Academics, Staff Directory.” Type in “Cooper” in the search bar to locate my page. At the top, you will see my classes. The class agenda and homework will be updated daily. Writing Workshop: This year we will be working on writing using a Writing Workshop model. Students will brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit at school. We will have one major piece of writing each six weeks for a major grade. Students will have class time provided for the whole process. There may be a time or two when they have to finish up at home or after school, but it will not be on a regular basis. We are going to have a wonderful year! Please feel free to call or email with questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting you at Back to School Night, September 9th!
