Sports Mr Moss Worldwide Recognition All students of last years Yr6 participated in a Culture, Education, Sport and Ethics Programme (CESEP) in their PE lessons. This was brought to Mr Moss’s attention by no other than Mr and Mrs Borges. The initiative was then set up in the Junior PE curricula to engage students in using their imagination to discover what sport means to them. They were asked to draw a picture, create a piece of art or write an essay/poem on multifaceted issues such as sportsmanship, culture, fair play, and the value of drug free sport. Donations of school materials to the school support staff Anna Falsztyn On February 11th, the Student Council got together and distributed school materials for the children of our school’s support staff. These school materials and backpacks were donations collected from last term's Casual Clothes Day Christmas campaign. Thank you for all your help and support! The most creative and best designed pieces of work by year 6 students were then chosen by Mr Moss and submitted to the CESP Program in Eugene Oregon, USA. Nine of the students' work were selected this year from over 3000 entries from around the world and from different children of all ages and cultures. The St Nicholas students' work is now published in a book by The Foundation for Global Sports Development, that will go out and be displayed in a special event this year in Vancouver, British Columbia at an Olympic venue. Congratulations to Damasia, Aleks, Pietro, Julia, Anna, Aristide, Giovanna, Leopoldo, Lisa and Rebecca for having their talents and creative energy publicly recognised in such a worldwide cultural programme. Instituto Vaga Lume Mrs Fletcher Last term, Year 2Y children, together with the Student Council, raised over R$700,00 selling second hand books. As the children were learning about the Rainforest, we chose the “Associação Vaga Lume” to donate the money. Vaga Lume is an organisation that develops projects in education and culture in partnership with education departments and community-based organizations in 20 municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon region. It creates opportunities for cultural exchange through reading, writing and speaking, emphasising the role of people and rural communities in the Brazilian Amazon. Ana, representing the association, came and spoke about the project to the children and showed their work, including books and a DVD. It was a lovely morning.Well done! Year 3 – Who We Are PYP Unit – OUR CULTURES (revisited) The original, traditional shape of the piñata is the six pointed star although today countless forms are in use: animals, plants, flowers, super hero characters etc. The clay pot or olla de barro that goes inside contains the fruit and candies or small toys. “Várias oportunidades vão ser oferecidas. Mas só as ganharão quem se preparar.” Carreira: Engenharia Química O que você pode fazer In Mexico the breaking of a piñata accompanies almost every festive occasion. Year 3Y pupil, Bernardo Verças, lived in Mexico for two years and loved making and breaking piñatas before moving to Brazil. He was kind enough to bring back a Darth Vader piñata with him and share this wonderful and unique tradition. by Mr L. Anderson At our fiesta, the piñata was suspended from above the tuck shop while children tried hitting it with a stick. Around the piñata the children (led by Mr. Carlos) sang: Dale, dale, dale, No pierdas el tino Porque si lo pierdes pierdes el camino. Hit it, hit it, hit it, Don't loose your aim. 'cause if you lose it you'll loose your way! One piñata tradition says you go around with your eyes covered, trying to find the good things and working hard to get them. Many thanks to the Verças Family for sharing the beautiful tradition with us! Top tips for recycling your clothes Recycle your wardrobe Getting tired of wearing the same old outfit or looking like everyone else? Or remember that skirt you bought ages ago but never wear? You don’t have to spend a fortune or shop till you drop to get a whole new wardrobe. Instead of getting new clothes or throwing your old ones out, why not try recycling? The School Raises Money for Haiti Just two days into the second term, we had a very important Casual Clothes Day campaign raising money for the earthquake victims of Haiti. Everyone offered generous support, and we were able to collect a record of over R$3500. The money was immediately donated to International Red Cross. Thank you! You don’t need to be able to sew. Using techniques such as cutting, ripping and dyeing it’s easy to update clothing even if you’ve never been near a sewing machine. Look at damaged clothes with fresh eyes. Got a cardigan with holes in the sleeve? The short-sleeved cardie is huge, so cut off the sleeves and edge in contrasting wool. Slash a dated turtleneck into a plunging one. Transform a maxi skirt into a mini or pencil by raising the hem. Cut off trousers to make into culottes or ankle skimmers. That boring cream shirt can easily be dyed in the washing machine into this season’s vibrant purples and reds. Embellishment is an easy way to update: try sequinned flowers and stars. More is more. Add a fur collar or cuffs. Think feathers, buttons and bows. Add jewels to cheap plain flats. Update last season’s tunic dress or long-line cardie with a wide belt. Try one over that chunky knit of your gran’s for a folk look. Cheap fashion fixes like coloured tights and bright gloves and scarves will give dated outfits a lift. Take the best bit – eg, the image on an old T-shirt and sew it on to a plain jumper. Hats are the quickest winter update. Use corsages, feathers and, wait for it, pompoms Be creative, use your imagination and make your clothes represent who you are! Have fun!! A different look at rocks Among amazing samples of rocks and tools used to understand stones better, the Year 2 children had the geologist Manuel Correa from Companhia Vale do Rio Doce explaining to them all about the layers of our planet, shapes of rocks and earthquakes. Let’s see what children liked the most about it. “I liked it when Manuel told us about a machine that goes really deep into the ground to pick the rocks up.” - Tanisha and Laura “I liked it when he said that one big rock is formed by many little rocks, one on top of the other. I liked it because I didn´t know it before.” - Guilherme Cunha “I found interesting that the earth can move and the plates go towards each other and when they go apart lava comes out.” - Lizzie “I liked the rocks he brought because they are nice rocks.” - Caio “And because they are beautiful and a little bit shiny.” Giovanna Chen “I liked the hammer he uses to collect samples of rocks.” - Lara Commemorations, celebrations and fun events around the world Action Committee / International Committee March 1 March – St. David’s Day is National Day for Welsh people, and is celebrated storytelling, singing and banquets. st 3rd March – Hina Matsuri or Doll Festival or Girl’s Festival is a Japanese festival.
