CONCERTS L: SUMMER SESSIONS 2014
Organized by the Ponta do Sol Inn, the “Concerts L” is the mellowest
music festival of intimate music in the Region: a concert series that
carries on through the month of October and where Portuguese music and
other various international guest perform in harmony with the sounds of
traditional or alternative music, rock, jazz, in order to produce an unique
space with an “exquisite” cultural offer.
In August, the line-up is both excellent and original, allowing everyone
to enjoy a unique atmosphere. Thus, opening this month, on the 6th, the band
from Braga “Peixe: Avião”, with a fusion progressive or “prog” electronic
rock and rock and roll. “Dirty Beaches” goes on stage on August 13th with
free jazz and new wave.
From the best Jazz school in the Portugal – The Hot Club, comes
André Santos & John Hasselberg, on the 20th of August, accompanied by
the talented regional trumpeter Rafael Andrade. One week later, another
Portuguese band “Mão Morta”, celebrating 30 years of career and after
releasing their new album, this alternative rock band has its première in the
“Concerts L” line-up programme, on August 27th.
In the following month of September, starting on the 13th, the Ponta do
Sol’s Inn welcomes Emika, one of the most respected Dubstep (a genre of
electronic dance music) artists, performing the most electronic concert of
this year’s summer sessions programme, but with some classical elements.
On the 20th of September, an opportunity to listen to the singersongwriter Mazgani, an Iranian living in Portugal, with his latest work
“Common Ground”.
Closing the month of September, on the 27th the lady-rapper from

Cycle of Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano
In 2004 and 2005, the Associação Amigos
do Conservatório de Música da Madeira
(AACMM) introduced the Complete Cycle of
Piano Sonatas by Artur Pizarro, and in 2008
the Cycle of Violin and Piano Sonatas with
João Pedro Cunha and António Rosado.
This year, through September and October,
the AACMM, is proud to present at the Baltazar
Dias Municipal Theatre, an ambitious project
involving musical genres composed by one
of the greatest composers of Western culture, the German composer
Ludwig van Beethoven. The Cycle of Cello and Piano Sonatas includes, in
addition to the five original works, transcriptions for trumpet Sonata, a
string trio sonata and the renowned “Kreutzer” violin sonata.
As for the sonatas for piano and violin, Beethoven’s cello sonatas
are part of the core repertoire for each musical instrument, depicting not
only the three main phases of his creative life, but also the development
music / dance
and affirmation process of a new musical
genre, and simultaneously “opening
a
window” to his passionate and
magnificent emotional world.

500th Anniversary Congress of Funchal’s Diocese
The Diocese of Funchal was the first Portuguese diocese of the
Catholic Church established outside of Europe, following the Portuguese
discoveries that spawned the first globalization experience. Madeira
would later on become a strategic platform for Iberian expansion to the
“new world”, as it was “seen” in the eyes of a Christian Europe, and of
key importance to the process of Christian globalization. The diocese
was founded in Funchal, in 1514, and would become an essential centre
for the expansion and edification of overseas missionary churches.
Thus, from September 17th to 20th is held the International Congress
“500 Years - Diocese of Funchal - The First Global Diocese: History,
Culture and Spirituality”. Definitely a cultural event of enormous scope
that counts on the presence and contribution of numerous experts and
researchers from the various areas of society, who will surely mark the
passage of the Funchal’s Diocese 5th Centenary Celebration. All of them
will certainly introduce and contribute with new data and information
for the development of its history and expecting a future to be based
on the analysis of current challenges.
