The extraordinary universe of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim cannot be captured
in words. It was with this idea in mind and equipped with their natural sensitivity
that directors Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Dora Jobim embraced the challenge of
unraveling onto film the musical trajectory of this great Brazilian composer, author of
a timeless collection of work with strong international appeal. In The Music according
to Antonio Carlos Jobim, the directors chose to adopt a sensorial approach in their
use of image and sound in order to showcase the work of a musician considered,
alongside Heitor Villa-Lobos, to be one of the greatest Brazilian musical talents of all
time. Not a single word is spoken in the film. There is no need. A succession of images
of great Brazilian and international interpreters in unforgettable performances, as
well as Jobim himself, in different moments, outline the musical trajectory of this
“sovereign composer”. Everything is present: the force and beauty of his music, the
different phases of the artist, the wide appeal and poetry of his songs, his musical
personality, the importance of his work. All this is woven into the narrative in a
vigorous and poetic manner, with no need for further explanation, merely the
pleasure and emotion of listening to Tom Jobim.

In 1985, Nelson directed a four-hour long documentary about Tom Jobim for Brazilian
television. He has always greatly admired the composer. When he decided to film
The Music according to Antonio Carlos Jobim, he realized that the family photograph
and film archive, as well as the material collated by Antonio Venâncio, was so rich
that the material itself could tell Tom’s story. “I saw that within each image there
was another story,” Nelson says. “And another. It was a story inside another story,
being told through music.” The narrative structure of the film consists of music,
moving images, and photographs. This ensures that attention is focused on each
photograph, on each original and surprising performance, allowing the spectator to
surrender to the music entirely.
Nelson is considered to be one of Brazil’s most important cinema directors. He was
one of the PRECURSORS of Cinema Novo. His film Barren Lives is possibly the most
highly awarded Brazilian film of all time. In 1955, at the age of 27, he made his first
feature length film Rio 40 Degrees. Throughout his career, he has made over 20 films,
including Gold Mouth, The Amulet of Ogum, Hunger for Love, How Tasty was My
Frenchman, Jubiabá, Tent of Miracles, Memoirs of Prison, winner of the FIPRESCI prize
at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival.

A PRECIOUS COLLECTION

The Music according to Antonio Carlos Jobim is a classic montage film, in which the
editing technique, of cuts and image insertions, defines the rhythm, the intensity
and the emotion to be conveyed. As a result, the team worked together throughout
the different stages: research, archive selection, and image editing.
Dora Jobim, Tom Jobim’s granddaughter, has extensive experience in musical DVDs
and is co-director of the film alongside Nelson Pereira dos Santos. Her thorough
understanding of the Jobim archive material, which she studied in depth, as well as
her sharp musical ear, were crucial while editing the film. Her experience coupled
with the wealth of photographic and filmic material made available to her by Ana
Jobim, the composer’s widow, proved decisive in the development of the film.
The screenwriter Miúcha Buarque de Holanda contributed her artistic vision and
personal perspective to the film. She was one of Tom Jobim’s closest friends, having
met him at Ipanema’s Bar Veloso, the local hangout popular among musicians in
the 1970s where Vinicius de Moraes composed The Girl from Ipanema. The song
became well known all over the world and helped to immortalize the neighborhood
where the famous girl was often seen walking by. Miúcha, who recorded the album
Best of two worlds with Stan Getz and with her former husband, João Gilberto, and
who witnessed Jobim’s musical day to day, organized the research material and
outlined Jobim’s basic story: his personality, his moods, his sagacity, his talent, the
sophistication of his music.

The musical direction of Paulo Jobim, Jobim’s son and a musician himself, was
indispensible. Paulo was the film’s musical ear and was responsible for the sound
quality of each file.
Images were selected following an extensive evaluation of all the available
documentation and photos in dozens of archives. Luelane Correa, the editor, together
with the directors, constructed Jobim’s musical trajectory through chronological
editing and through the use of photographs and images, thus allowing the story to
