I knew just three things about Iceland when I stepped off the
plane in Reykjavík: that it was the homeland of Björk (of whom
I am a fan), that the country’s economy was bankrupt and that
its wildlife had inspired Jules Verne’s classic book Journey to the
Center of the Earth. It was this wildlife that paralyzed world travel in April via ashes released from an erupting volcano, whose
name is nearly impossible to pronounce, in the middle of nowhere
in the North Atlantic. The smoke was gone by the time I got there
one June afternoon in the first of three summer months. There
was, at the time, another spectacle in the sky: the sun at midnight. Being so close to the North Pole – at 66 degrees latitude,
on the border of the arctic circle –, Iceland stands out as one of
the rare spots on the planet where the sun descends as far as the
horizon without disappearing completely. Without darkness to
limit our days there, we – and the hundreds of tourists crowding
the airport – could enjoy the hottest temperatures of the year: an
average of 50 °F, as opposed to to the 32 °F winter average, when
the days shrink to just two hours of sunlight and the black sky is
graced with the hallucinatory colors of the northern lights.
Surrounded by solidified lava, the only large roadway in the country, National Highway 1, circles the coastline of this island that’s
the size of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Its interior, impenetrable unless you’ve got a well-equipped jeep, is itself an expanse of
mountains and about 25 large volcanoes and glaciers which cover
15% of Iceland’s territory. Our expectations were thwarted when

u só sabia três coisas sobre a Islândia quando desembarquei na capital Reykjavík: que aquela era a terra da cantora Björk (de quem sou fã confesso), que a economia do
país estava quebrada e que sua natureza selvagem tinha sido inspiração para Viagem ao Centro da Terra, o clássico livro de Julio
Verne. Tanto que as cinzas provocadas pela erupção de um vulcão de nome quase impronunciável ali, no meio do nada do Atlântico Norte, em abril, havia paralisado o tráfego aéreo mundial. A
fumaceira já tinha desaparecido quando cheguei, em um entardecer de junho, primeiro dos únicos três meses de verão. Havia, nessa época, outro espetáculo no céu: o sol da meia-noite. Por estar
tão perto do Polo Norte – a 66 graus de latitude, na linha do círculo polar ártico –, a Islândia se destaca como um raro ponto do planeta onde o sol desce até a linha do horizonte mas não desaparece completamente. Sem a escuridão para limitar o dia, nós – e as
centenas de turistas que lotavam o aeroporto – podíamos aproveitar bem a temperatura mais quente do ano: média de 10 °C, contra
0 °C do inverno, quando os dias chegam a ter só duas horas de luz
e o céu negro ganha as cores alucinantes da aurora boreal.

volcano, was not visible from the ground. “You’d need to make a
steep climb up a glacier, and even then it depends on the conditions of the snow and ice,” warned geologist Ari Guðmundsson. His
typical last name made me notice a peculiarity: in Iceland, last
names are a combination of one’s father’s name plus the suffix son
for males or dóttir for females.
Luckily, you don’t need to climb a volcano to feel the hot air and smell
the sulfur rising from the bubbly underground: there are hot-water pools
all over the place. Just drive eight and a half miles from the airport and
you’ll be amazed at the sight of the most scenic, the Blue Lagoon. Converted into a spa, it’s constantly filled with bathers smeared with the
white mud from the lake bottom. Part of the steamy scenery, puffs of
smoke rise out of the soil, from which waters as hot as 464 °F spring and
are used by a neighboring geothermic power planet to produce electricity for the region. Nearby is Strokkur, a perfect example of a geyser (one
