• Delhi's first Hydropower plant commissioned
• DJB to produce 20,000 Kwh energy per year from its newly
commissioned hydro power plant installed at Chilla STP
• First ever Hydropower plant running from treated effluent water
coming out of an STP
• Part of DJB’s quest for environmental solutions
• Power generation to help in reduction of air pollution and saving of
revenue
In a historic development, DJB has commissioned the first ever Hydro
power plant in the city. The plant has been set up at DJB’s 9 MGD Sewage
Treatment Plant at Chilla. It is first ever power plant which will be run through
the Hydraulic Turbine propelled by treated effluent coming out of a Sewerage
Treatment Plant. The treated effluent falls through the height of 4.8m which,
due to created pressure and velocity leads to the rotation of the turbine thereby
generating power.
It is the first ever “green power generation” through Hydro- power in
the history of the Delhi city. The generated electricity is being utilized at the
STP itself. It will produce 20,000 KWH of electricity per year. It is a Pilot
Project which has been set up free of cost. The use of fossil fuels leads to the
generation of carbon dioxide which in turn leads to Green House Effect and
Global Warming. However no fossil fuel is being used in the generation of the
power through Hydro-power at Chilla, therefore this technology is termed as
"pollution free technology".
The generation of power helps in reducing air pollution and in the saving
of revenue on account of use of the Grid Power. In its quest for environmental
solutions the DJB is looking at the possibility of replication of this “Green
Power Generation” at its other installations as well.
