Pastor’s Note
Dear Parishioners,
Sacramental Information
Baptism
Today’s Gospel tells of Jesus coming to his hometown of
Nazareth and going to teach in the synagogue on the
Sabbath. Before beginning his teaching, Jesus reads a
passage from the prophet Isaiah, which told of the Messiah and Savior God promised to bring healing, restoration
and salvation to the people of Israel. After reading the passage, Jesus proclaims that this passage was fulfilled in
their hearing. In other words, he was announcing himself
as the long-promised Messiah.
How sad it was that the majority of the people gathered
there that day were unable to see that Jesus was the longawaited Messiah. It seems they were blinded by their
experience of Jesus growing up humbly among them as
the son of a carpenter. The Messiah was supposed to be
someone like the great King David, who threw off the
oppressors and restored the nation of Israel. Jesus
certainly didn’t fit the bill. And so they rejected Jesus and
his message of salvation.
Now we shouldn’t be too hasty in judging the people in
Nazareth, because they had certain expectations, and
they weren’t being met in the manner they expected. How
often do we think things should unfold and happen in
our lives in a certain time and fashion because we
have prayed for them? And then when they do not, we
feel discouraged and frustrated and turn away from
God.
Contact the Parish office to arrange for baptismal preparation. Baptisms are celebrated monthly except during Lent.

Rosary
The Rosary is recited daily after the 8 am Mass and
before the 5:30 pm Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Hispanic Community has a Rosary Hour every
Monday at 6 pm in the Rectory Chapel.
If we bear these things in mind, it will help us to keep our
eyes firmly fixed upon Jesus, and make slow and steady
progress in growing in faith and holiness of life. This will
enable us to become more patient, gentle, kind, compassionate and forgiving toward others. Our goal is to live
in such a way that we give glory to God, and invite
others to know the joy we have found in Jesus.
Fr. Tad
For example, this can happen when we place the pursuit
of money or material things before God, thinking they can
bring us happiness or peace. But ultimately, the only
things that will bring us true happiness, peace and joy are
loving Jesus and trying to walk in his way of love.
So let’s try to keep our minds and hearts open to the
Lord’s love, and to the many and varied ways that he
wants to work in our lives. Let us press upon our hearts
the importance of remembering that God hears and
answers all our prayers, but he answers them in his
time and in the way that is best for us.

Mass Intentions
There has been some confusion and anxiety about
requesting mass intentions. In order to publish a
mass intention in the bulletin, the mass intention
must be received by Monday for the following week
as our bulletin goes to print on Tuesday morning.
For the intention to be read at Mass but not published, it must be received by Wednesday morning.
We regret that sometimes we cannot accommodate
last-minute requests.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Catholic Schools across the nation will celebrate Catholic Schools Week beginning Sunday, January 31. As
we prepare for this special week we are reminded that
the first Catholic Schools Week celebration took place in
1974.
St. Clare School will start Catholic Schools Week with
Mass at 9:00 am and a pancake breakfast. Breakfast
will be served in the St. Clare Hall from 8:00 am to
12:00 noon. We invite you to join us to celebrate with
our community. Our Open House will start at 9:30 am
and end at 1:00 pm. Faculty, staff, students and parent
volunteers will be on hand to answer your questions
about our school academic and religious programs. We
look forward to meeting you!
For enrollment information, please stop by the school
between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm to ask questions and/or
pick up an application packet. More information may be
found at www.stclareschool.org.
The Diocese of San Jose will also recognize Catholic
Schools Week. Student representatives from the Diocesan schools will gather to celebrate at the Basilica, and
return to their school communities to share the "good
news of Catholic Education." St. Clare School and St.
Clare Parish will join the Diocese of San Jose as we
honor the theme of Mercy this year.
Our Catholic Schools are vibrantly alive in Faith,
Knowledge and Service—this is especially manifest in
our own school community. St. Clare School has been
providing quality Catholic education for students in
grades K-8 in the city of Santa Clara for over 158 years.
Our staff is dedicated to providing a worshipping, serving, learning, and growing environment for our students.
St. Clare School does not discriminate on the basis of
race, color, national and ethnic origin in the administration of their educational policies, admission policies,
scholarship programs, athletic and other school administered programs.
On behalf of our Pastor, Fr. Tad, Parochial Vicar, Fr.
Pedro, the Faculty and Staff of St. Clare School and
Parish, Happy Catholic Schools Week!
Sincerely in Christ,
Madeline Rader

Scripture Readings
for THIS Sunday
First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13
Gospel Reading: Luke 4:21-30
THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE
It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to
write what we now know as the thirteenth chapter of First
Corinthians, knew that he was penning what was to become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this brief
passage, he set down ideals about love that have held
fast through the centuries. Sometimes we may think that
because these are ideals to which we aspire, we are
excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends,
providing them with some sound advice about what it
meant—and still means—to live in love, day by day, as a
follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a
broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God
and neighbor. Today we hear what this love must look
like in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our
relationships with others.

pretexto é algo inventado, esmorecem ficam desiludidos
anunciou.
