internacional estreia-se no espaço
do quarto de banho com a Roca.

Álvaro Siza Vieira nasceu em 1933 na cidade
de Matosinhos. Formou-se na Escola Superior
de Belas Artes do Porto. Conta que foi um
tio que o encorajou a estudar e desenhar.
Sendo um dos arquitectos portugueses mais
reconhecidos a nível internacional, não só pelas
grandes obras, mas também pela forma como
a elas se dedica e realiza, Siza Vieira alcançou
notoriedade sobretudo na construção e
recuperação de edifícios. É autor de numerosos
projectos espalhados pelo mundo, obras que
convencem pela simplicidade, tais como o
Pavilhão de Portugal na Expo 98, o conceito
para a reconstrução do Chiado, o Paul Getty
Museum em Santa Mónica nos EUA, o Museu
de Arte Contemporânea em Helsínquia,
duas torres habitacionais em Roterdão e a
reformulação da Baixa de Madrid.
Siza Vieira foi condecorado com muitos prémios
internacionais, entre eles o Prémio Pritzker,
considerado o Nobel da arquitectura (1992).
Destacar-se ainda o mais recente: o Instituto
Real dos Arquitectos Britânicos atribuiu-lhe
a Medalha de Ouro Real de 2009 pela sua
contribuição para a arquitectura internacional.
A Siza Vieira foi atribuído o doutoramento
honoris causis por sete universidades, entre as
quais a Universidade de Valência e a Escola
Politécnica de Lausanne.

The renowned international architect, Siza Vieira, presents his first bathroom
creation together with Roca.
Álvaro Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos, in the north of Portugal, in 1933. He
graduated from the university “Escola Superior de Belas Artes” in Porto after
he was encouraged to study and design by an uncle. Being one of the most
famous Portuguese architects at an international level, not only for great works
of architecture, but also for his dedication to the projects and the way he carries
them out, Siza Vieira has obtained a reputation especially in the construction
and recuperation of buildings. He is the author of numerous projects all over the
world, works that stand out for their simplicity and originality, such as the Portugal
Pavilion in Expo 98; the concept of the reconstruction of Chiado - an historic area
of Lisbon; the Paul Getty Museum in Santa Monica, USA; the Helsinki Museum
of Contemporary Art, two housing towers in Rotterdam and the reformulation of
downtown Madrid.
Siza Vieira has been awarded with many international prizes, among them the
Pritzker prize in 1992, considered the Nobel Prize of architecture. The latest award:
the Royal Institute of British Architects attributed the Royal Gold Medal in 2009 for
his contribution to international architecture.
To Siza Vieira was given the doctorate honoris causis in seven universities, including
the Valencia University and Lausanne Polytechnic School.

Simples, confortável e flexível – é assim que o próprio
Siza descreve a sua primeira criação para o quarto de
banho, uma experiência nova e um desafio exigente
de que o arquitecto muito gostou. Em estreita
colaboração com a Roca, mergulhou no mundo da
cerâmica, conhecendo as condições específicas do
fabrico de louça sanitária. Deste processo de criação
evoluiu, «sem esforço, mas de forma natural», a linha
Simplesmente Siza que alude à história, piscando o
olho ao futuro.
I wanted to create a collection of bathroom products that
looked like bathroom products.
Simple, comfortable and flexible – with these words Siza
himself describes his first creation of a bathroom space, a
new experience and a demanding challenge that the wellknown architect really enjoyed. In close collaboration with
Roca, he dived into the world of ceramics, getting to know
the specific conditions of production for sanitary ware. As a
result of this creative process, a collection evolved, «without
effort, but in a natural way», the collection Simply Siza that
alludes to history, while looking ahead to the future.

A história da louça sanitária serviu como fonte de
inspiração. Procura-se sobretudo conforto, hoje
como ontem. Sempre muito próximo do consumidor,
Siza Vieira decidiu desenhar uma colecção de banho
popular, e acessível a todos. Visou, ao mesmo tempo,
satisfazer os vários sentidos, e dar conforto ao corpo
e à mente com uma colecção que liga funcionalidade,
bem-estar e estética.
I wanted to create an, undoubtedly new image, but one that had a strong link to the history of sanitary ware pieces.
The history of bathroom fittings has served as an inspiration. Comfort has remained the most important factor to be
considered. Always very close to the consumer, Siza Vieira decided to create a popular bath collection that is, above
all, affordable. At the same time he aimed at satisfying all the senses, pleasing body and mind with a collection that
connects functionality, well-being and aesthetics.

A evolução arquitectónica dos últimos 90 anos criou
casas com espaços cada vez mais determinados. Com
a colecção Simplesmente Siza, o arquitecto pretende
devolver aos habitantes a flexibilidade que se perdeu ao
longo do tempo. Esta linha adapta-se perfeitamente às
necessidades individuais da sociedade moderna que é
uma sociedade móvel e flexível. Insere-se tão bem num
quarto de banho espaçoso como num pequeno, em
ambiente urbano ou rural, e dá conforto a uma família ou
a uma pessoa só.
In an old house there is a certain neutrality regarding the function.
The architectonic evolution of the last 90 years has created houses with more and more specific spaces. With the Simply
Siza collection, the architect intends to give back to the inhabitants the flexibility that has been lost along the years. This
line is adapted perfectly to the individual necessities of modern society that is a mutable and flexible. It can be placed
just as well into a large bathroom as into a tiny one, in an urban or rural environment, giving comfort to a whole family or
to a person living alone.

os móveis, que é realmente novo: uma sanita parece
uma sanita e um armário parece um armário.»
A simplicidade e o conforto estendem-se aos móveis,
que convencem com a mesma flexibilidade. Com este
pensamento, Siza Vieira desenhou-os «no sentido de
servir para vários fins, inclusivamente como móvel, em
vários espaços da casa».
Prestam preciosos serviços não só no quarto de
banho, mas também na sala comum, na cozinha ou
nos quartos. «Queria acentuar a sua autonomia.»
There is a common aspect between the ceramic pieces and furniture,
which is truly new: a toilet looks like a toilet and a cabinet looks like
a cabinet.
Simplicity and comfort extends to the pieces of furniture and their
flexibility is equally persuasive. Bearing that in mind, Siza Vieira
created them with the purpose of serving several aims, inclusively as
furniture in various parts of the house. They give precious services
not only in the bathroom, but also in the living room, in the kitchen or
in bedrooms. I wanted to highlight their autonomy.
