Ari: Although I enjoy thrillers, I don't usually read works written by men, and this book embodies pretty much everything I hate about the sub genre. The murder in itself is gruesome, intricate, and frighteningly plausible, which is the reason why I decided to try and break my "no male authors" rule (also Jean Reno, but that's beside the point). But that's where my praise stops. Niémans is a boring male superintendent with and entire closet full of anger management issues, to the point where he's borderline psychopathic. And apparently I'm supposed to emphasise with this tortured, gruff man who barks orders and verbally abuses women (unless and even when he wants to fuck them - and apparently he wants to fuck literally every woman he comes in contact with) and more often than not physically abuses his male colleagues. Such a charming fellow. Even still, I would be more inclined to accept his violent inclination if he didn't act like an entitled, sleazy, sexist pig. Now, Abdouf is another can of worms entirely, and more to my liking. He's bright, bold, enthusiastic, better fleshed-out, and more importantly different. His own brand of manpain is easier to relate to - or ar the very least easier to indulge in. Even with all his faults Karim, as a character, is fundamentally likeable. His chapters read the fastest because I actually managed to switch my brain off and dive into the narration. As for the book as a whole, I guess a point could be made that no one is impervious to disease, be it physical or mental, and this novel sets out to explore all the different iterations of sickness what it entails, the different faces it can assume, and so on - but in order to do that (blame it on the fact the book was written in 1997 or the distinctly French prose style) the greater message gets lost in a sea of manpain and lack of tangible conclusion that I absolutely don't care for. Gostei bastante desta parte do livro! Do?an Kaytan: Kitab?n ilk yar?s?
