It genuinely does not bother me that they call me this name, but what does bother me is this: Our school has a very strict policy against bullies, yet bullying still occurs nearly everyday. Why do kids continue to do this? We all saw the “Ryan's Story” assembly and it makes no sense to me why kids are still trying to bully other kids. Thankfully, I am a strong person who can handle this. But, what about kids that can't? Please think twice (or even three times!) before opening your mouth- or typing on your screen- to bully someone. PATRIOTS By Anthony Deus In the first game of the AFC Conference round the Indianapolis Colts geared up against their fierce competitorsthe New England Patriots. Colts Quarterback Andrew Luck threw two interceptions in the first two quarters! Then, the Patriots had their stroke of bad luck too! The Patriots’ punter bobbled the football and tried to pick it up and throw it, but he bobbled it again and ran into the end zone and dropped it, where the Colts picked it up. Since Patriots Running Back Stevan Ridley was benched (not for the whole game, he was played again in the fourth quarter), he was replaced by Legarrette Blount who ran for four touchdowns . Then, in the 3rd quarter Luck threw two interceptions again! You might say that Luck had no luck this game! And to top it off, Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady ran for a touchdown. The Patriots were the victors with a final score of 43 to 22 . BRONCOS TROUNCED IN SUPER BOWL By Patrick Moquin Peyton Manning is the first quarterback to set a Super Bowl record, and still manage to lose by five touchdowns, as the Broncos were embarrassed by the Seattle Seahawks 43-8 in this year’s Super Bowl game. Peyton Manning had 280 yards passing and a touchdown, but two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown by Seattle linebacker, Malcolm, would make the loss all the more embarrassing. Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas was the only person to score a touchdown for the Broncos. In fact, Thomas had a great game despite the loss, getting 118 receiving yards and a touchdown. On the other side of the ball, Russell Wilson had 206 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. Percy Harvin made his official comeback with an 87 yard touchdown return to start the second half. Although Marshawn Lynch had a quiet game, even he had a touchdown with 39 yards rushing. Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse also had touchdowns in the Seattle victory. Although much was expected of Richard Sherman and Knowshon Moreno, both left the game early with injuries. This Super Bowl was one of the most hyped games of the decade, and it was also the most disappointing. However, the Seahawks have taught us that the best defense will always beat the best offense, and apparently, by a lot. Page 3 The Surfside Times March 2014 Paint Wind:: BBook Review M USICthe REVIEW ASTILLE By Olivia Degen Bastille is a British rock band. They were formed in London in 2010. Dan Smith, the lead singer, started out as a solo artist, but then decided to form a band. Other members are Kyle Simmons, Chris Wood, and William Farquarson. In December of 2010, Bastille announced that they had been offered a record contract by EMI Music and Virgin Records. Bastille’s debut single, “Overjoyed” came out in April 2012. Their second single, “Bad Blood” came out a short five months later, in August. “Bad Blood” achieved some success, charting at number ninety in the United Kingdom. The group’s third single, titled “Flaws” was the first of their songs to get into the Top 40 charts, getting up to number twenty one. “Pompeii” Bastille’s most famous song, topped to number two on the charts in February 2013. Bastille has been nominated for a few Brit Awards, like Best British Group, British Breakthrough Act, and British Album of the Year. BOOK REVIEWS By Justin Cicoi Gathering Blue By Noah Scott The UnWanted Series by Lois Lowry In Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry the central character, Kira, who is burdened with a crippled leg, is orphaned in a society that would usually send the disabled or weak to the fields, which is certain death at the hands of beasts. In the novel, Kira must find a reason for the Council to let her live in the village and not take her to the fields. Kira has a gift at excelling at embroidery, so the Council lets her live to repair and restore a beautiful robe that holds the depressing history of their village. Throughout the story, Kira must learn the art form from an old woman, Annabella. She learns to dye many colors, except for blue, which nobody in her society knows how to make. She also learns of the terrible history and great secrets of her village. By Lisa McMann I liked the UnWanted book series. It was a good mix of fantasy and action. This book series is often likened to “The Hunger Game Series” and “The Harry Potter Series” for all of its fantasy and excitement. The series follows kids with extraordinary artistic gifts are sentenced to death but are saved by the mysterious secret land in the oil fields. I enjoyed this series, but not as much as others in this same genre. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter & The Hunger Games though, then you will likely enjoy this series. It’s actually a church sanctioned holiday. The thing is, nobody really knows which Valentine Valentine’s Day is really about. One Valentine was a Christian priest who was thrown in jail by a Roman emperor in 300 CE. On February 14, this Valentine was beheaded. The other Valentine was an Italian bishop. He lived at about the same time as Valentine #1, around 300 CE. He was imprisoned for secretly marrying couples. This was in violation of one of the laws of the Roman emperor at the time. Legends say he was burned at the stake. Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as Valentine’s Day in take part in the fun as tradition. It is a day to show a friend or a loved one that you care. They eat: monkeys, birds, deer, boar, turtles, snakes, lizards, fish, tapir, and alligators. Currently though, they are the most stable in the Amazon rainforest and the deserts of the Southwest and Northern Mexico. Unfortunately, the number of jaguars has been decreasing rapidly! It is very important to the eco system that WE save the Jaguar! Remember to support wildlife funds!!! Jaguars are incredible cats. They live in South America, Central America, and occasionally in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. They are incredibly versatile and adaptable like their cousins, the leopard. They performed sit-ins, boycotts, and other peaceful protest techniques that helped them gain their rights. However, not everyone agreed with King’s views. On April 4, 1968, this peaceful man was killed by James Earl Ray. However, the impact he made on racial equality changed the course of this country’s history for the better. He gave an entire race a new opportunity at a successful life, now that no limitations were holding them back. Even though Martin Luther King’s death was tragic, he will be remembered in history forever. “I HAVE A DREAM” -MLK, JR.
