ATIVIDADE DE INVESTIGAÇÃO 2.1. Enquadramento A atividade do signatário é realizada em três vertentes fundamentais: a) atividade letiva como docente no Departamento Engenharia de Polímeros da Universidade do Minho; b) atividade científica realizada no Instituto de Polímeros e Compósitos (IPC); c) atividade relacionada com o meio envolvente. 3 O IPC, conjuntamente com o CENIMAT (Centro de Investigação em, Materiais da Universidade Nova de Lisboa) e o FSCOSD (Física de Semicondutores, Optielectrónica e Sistemas Desordenados da Universidade de Aveiro), constituem o I3N (Instituto de Nanoestruturas, Nanomodelação e Nanofabricação, o qual tem o estatuto de Laboratório Associado. Neste contexto, e dadas as competências adquiridas durante o Doutoramento, a minha atividade científica desenvolve-se essencialmente em modelação e otimização de processos e projecto de equipamento. Esta atividade assenta em três vértices principais: desenvolvimento de rotinas de modelação de processos, desenvolvimento de algoritmos de otimização multi-objectivo (baseados na teoria da evolução natural e conhecidos como Algoritmos Evolutivos) e realização de trabalho experimental com vista à validação das rotinas de modelação e otimização anteriores. 2.2. Áreas e domínios de investigação i) Modelação de processos baseados na extrusão A compreensão dos fenómenos termomecânicos que ocorrem nas extrusoras é fundamental para o controlo e a melhoria contínua dos processos. Com o entendimento destes fenómenos foi possível desenvolver modelos matemáticos que relacionam variáveis importantes dos processos referidos. Assim, implementaram-se programas de computador que relacionam as propriedades dos polímeros, a geometria do sistema e as condições operatórias com vista à quantificação do desempenho do processo, o qual pode ser medido com variáveis tais como o débito das máquinas, o consumo de energia e a qualidade do extrudido, etc. Estes programas de modelação poderão, então ser acoplados a rotinas de otimização com o objetivo de melhorar os processos. Os processos modelados são a extrusão monofuso, incluindo parafusos barreira, e a extrusão de duplo-fuso co-rotativa. Recentemente, a análise usada nas extrusoras monofuso foi usada para modelar a fase de plastificação do processo de injeção. ii) Sistemas de Otimização e Design Multi-Objetivo e Multidisciplinares (MO-MDO). Os problemas práticos de projeto e otimização em engenharia são normalmente complexos, multidisciplinares e difíceis de resolver em períodos razoáveis de tempo. Nalguns casos, podem ser simulados matematicamente utilizando ferramentas computacionais sofisticadas, que geralmente requerem recursos significativos. Os Algoritmos Evolutivos são particularmente adequados para lidar com a natureza multi-objetivo dos problemas reais, uma vez que trabalham com uma população (de vetores ou soluções) em vez de com uma única solução. Tal permite a geração de 4 fronteiras de Pareto que representam o balanço entre os objetivos proporcionando, simultaneamente, uma ligação às variáveis de decisão. O objetivo final é resolver problemas complexos de engenharia, utilizando ferramentas capazes de lidar com objetivos múltiplos, a tomada de decisão, a robustez das soluções e a redução do tempo de cálculo. iii) A verificação experimental dos resultados obtidos é a chave para o bom sucesso do trabalho desenvolvido, pois permite a obtenção de resultados que estejam de acordo com a realidade prática. O trabalho experimental tem sido realizado no equipamento laboratorial existente no DEP. Recentemente, foi desenvolvida uma máquina de extrusão monofuso laboratorial completamente modular, a qual permitirá a verificação experimental dos resultados produzidos no âmbito do desenho de parafusos de extrusão. Assim, os atuais interesses de investigação são: - Modelação da extrusão monofuso e duplo-fuso co-rotativa - Otimização e design de extrusoras monofuso - Otimização e design de extrusoras de extrusoras de duplo-fuso co-rotativas - Otimização e design do processo de injeção - Desenvolvimento de sistemas de MO-MDO para os processos indicados acima - Modelação da mistura no processamento de polímeros - Modelação da cinética de reções químicas em extrusão reativa - Modelação da dinâmica de sólidos usando o método dos elementos discretos - Análise de robustez das soluções - Tomada de decisão em ambiente multi-objetivo - Seleção de atributos usando algoritmos de otimização multi-objetivo 2.3. Esta colaboração permitiu tomar contato com um centro de investigação da Rolls-Royce (Advanced Manufacturing Center) liderado pelo Prof. Peter Fleming através da participação em alguns projetos. Devido ao carater confidencial dos trabalhos realizados não se podem divulgar mais detalhes. Colaboração com o Prof. Gustavo Reccio no desenvolvimento de estratégias de robustez para problemas de engenharia em ambiente multi-objectivo e deselvolvimento de algoritmos de optimização para aplicação na previsão de falência de empresas. Deu origem a um artigo [2], aceite para publicação. 3. PERSPETIVAS DE INVESTIGAÇÃO FUTURA A investigação futura do signatário será realizada tendo em conta as colaborações recentes com os colegas Brasileiros do ICMC da USP de São Carlos, as colaborações internacionais já referidas anteriormente, as colaborações com os colegas do IPC e de outros departamentos da Universidade do Minho e a Organização da EMO2015. A colaboração com o ICMC reveste-se de grande relevância devido à participação em dois projetos: i) Um projeto CEPID de primordial importância para esse mesmo centro de investigação. O ICMC será a sede do Centro de Pesquisa, Inovação e Difusão do Centro de Ciências Matemáticas Aplicadas à Indústria (CEPID-CeMEAI). Este projeto contará com avultados investimentos no decorrer dos cinco anos de duração do projeto. As atividades serão desenvolvidas nas áreas de Otimização Aplicada e Pesquisa Operacional, Mecânica de Fluídos Computacional, Avaliação de Risco, Inteligência Computacional e Engenharia de Software. ii) Participação num projeto financiado pelo CNPq em "smartgrids" (Redes Elétricas com Inteligência). A organização da EMO2015 em 2015 em Guimarães, de que o signatário será o organizador principal, reveste-se de grande relevância devido às potencialidades que poderão advir para o futuro 10 no sentido de realizar contatos com investigadores internacionais com vista a potenciar colaborações em projetos europeus. 4. ATIVIDADE PROFISSIONAL A atividade profissional decorre da estrutura organizacional definida no estatuto da carreira universitária. O signatário exerceu as seguintes funções: - De Outubro de 1990 até Fevereiro de 2000: Assistente na Universidade do Minho - De Fevereiro de 2000 até Fevereiro de 2005: Professor Auxiliar na Universidade do Minho - Desde Fevereiro de 2005: Professor auxiliar com nomeação definitiva na Universidade do Minho Além disso forma atribuídas pela Direcção do DEP as seguintes tarefas: [1] Desenvolvimento e concepção da página de Internet do DEP (http://www.dep.uminho.pt/home/) e da Licenciatura em Engenharia de Polímeros (http://www.dep.uminho.pt/home/ensino/licenciatura/index.htm). A página atual foi desenvolvida por uma empresa. [2] Desenvolvimento e concepção de uma página de Internet interna para o DEP cujo objectivo principal é fazer uma gestão integrada dos laboratórios do Departamento em termos da 37 marcação de equipamento, gestão dos utilizadores dos laboratórios e sistema de gestão de custos (http://www.dep.uminho.pt/intranet/). A página atual foi desenvolvida por uma empresa. [3] Concepção de uma página de Internet interna para a gestão das publicações do DEP. Não se encontra em funcionamento. [4] Durante 2005 desempenhou as funções de Coordenador do Laboratório de Processamento de Polímeros III, tendo como principais funções manter a organização do laboratório, quer em termos funcionais (aquisição de consumíveis, reparações de equipamento, formação a utilizadores, definição de regras de ocupação dos aparelhos, etc.) quer no respeitante a aspectos de segurança. 38
