November Events at the MECC
Important Information and Dates
Dear MECC Families,
Last year’s November Bee Line started with the following:
I hope that by the time you read this you will have regained
your electricity and your heat! I hope you and your family
members are recovering from the recent storm. So much has
happened in a year’s time, and yet here I am with the same
weather related thoughts being sent to you a year later!
The children at the ECC are growing and learning each day! I
marvel at the new skills I see them master. For some,
learning how to walk up and down the tall stairs with ease is a
great triumph, for others, learning to take turns with friends
and share toys is another tremendous accomplishment. I’ve
noticed some children are learning their letters and their
sounds, others are starting to read and a few are proficient
readers!
You will be receiving an invitation to parent/teacher
conferences via US mail within the next day or two. I strongly
encourage you attend Parent Conferences this month to hear
about the skills your child is learning and to have a personal
conversation about your child’s growth and development
with your child’s teacher. As the parent of a preschool
student, you are the strongest influence in your child’s life.
We wish to partner with you as we pave the way for
continued academic, social emotional and physical growth in
the coming years.
Every family will have an opportunity to meet with the
classroom teacher during Parent Conference time. Please
return the attached sign-up sheet to your child’s classroom
teacher letting her know when you are available for
conferences. Each teacher will be in touch with you to let you
know when your scheduled conference appointment will be.
With the change in the season, please be sure your child
comes to school dressed for the weather and please be sure
to have all items labeled with your child’s name. I look
forward to seeing you at the various November events at the
MECC, where we are always a beehive of activity!

NURSE’S NEWS
Hello Parents and Guardians,
In October I did heights and weights on all the students. In some of the classes we weighed a pumpkin to see
who was bigger. It was a fun project and the children enjoyed it.
I will soon begin vision and hearing screening on PK1 students. I will do PK2 and PK3 later in the school year.
I want to inform you that school health screenings are not diagnostic in nature but assist in identifying students
that need further assessments. I will retest in one to two weeks in the event there is a positive finding and I will
notify you only of positive findings.
The hearing screening consists of your child putting on headphones and is asked to identify ten pictures
presented in eight descending decibel levels.
If your child points to the correct picture, it is assumed that he/she can hear at that level of speech. This
technique has been extremely reliable over the past several decades in the early identification of hearing loss in
children.
The vision screening consists of the Massachusetts Visual Acuity Test.
The students need to identify 4 out of 5 shapes at a distance of 10 feet. Each eye is tested separately. The next
part of the screen is called the random dot E. The student will wear polarized glasses to locate the 3 dimensional
E correctly on 4 out of 5 presentations. This test identifies depth perception and muscle balance.
This may be a good time to change seasonal clothing as the weather is changing. Hats and mittens are needed
when the temperature gets colder. These will help keep the children warm when they go outside to the
playground.
Reminder: If your child has an immunization or physical exam during the school year please send me a copy. I
need to keep updated records for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Thank you,
Nurse Mary
Enjoy the season!

Approaching Parent–Teacher Conferences
A two-way conversation: The parent–teacher conference is an opportunity for parents to learn about their children’s
progress in school and for teachers to gain insights into their students’ home and community lives. Parent perspectives on
student strengths and needs, learning styles, and non-school learning opportunities can help teachers shape their
instructional methods.
Emphasis on learnin:. Research shows that family involvement is most effective when it is “linked to learning.” An important
goal of the first parent–teacher conference is to develop new strategies to support student learning at school and at home.
Teachers should be prepared to discuss the academic progress of their students by using examples of student work and
assessments during conferences.

conferencia.
