They had God’s promises, and the promise of glory was among them. But Paul makes the list of these blessings with great sorrow, as he says, because it is hard for him to see any of the promised good things in the current state of God’s people. It can certainly seem to a Christian as if the same list and the same sorrow are suitable for Christians now. Christians are also promised adoption as children of God. They have a covenant, a new covenant, with God and a new worship to go with it. They are promised glory too, the glory of holiness and union with the Lord. But for Christians now as for God’s people then it is often very difficult to see the fulfillment of these promises in one’s own life. Does anyone have even one day in which he feels that his life has shown the fruit of these promises on that day? So, for every Christian, there is a sorrow of the sort Paul expressed, because the sins and failures of one’s life can seem so hard to square with the promises of God. Where is the adoption and the glory? What are God’s people to do in this condition and its sorrow? The Gospel gives us a picture for an answer: as long as he has faith and doesn’t look down, Peter comes to the Lord, walking on water. No matter how sorrowful a person’s failures, he can nonetheless come to the Lord. Doing so may feel like walking without any solid ground under foot. But faith is a kind of walking on water, too, isn’t it? As long as one doesn’t look down, as long as one keeps his eyes fixed on Jesus in faith, even walking on nothing to come to Him is possible. All the promises of God are fulfilled in Him. __________________________________________ COLLECTIONS: LAST WEEKEND’S COLLECTION: FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK: Where do you find God? Only in church? Only while praying? Only in times of need or distress? Only in those we expect to be holy or pious people? Too often we look to great people and to the events in our lives to find God, as if our en-counters with God have to meet certain standards and criteria in order to be true. There is a tendency in some to see God only in the extraordinary, not in the routine and ordinary. But to do that would be to limit the ways God reveals Himself to us. In our readings today we are presented with two seemingly conflicting ways that God enters our world. Elijah found God in the gentle breeze, after the spectacular wind and earth-quake. God was present in the soft breeze, not the storm. What beautiful, peaceful imagery. How many times have you felt that gentle touch of God on your face? The gospel presents Jesus coming to the disciples in the middle of a storm, where he brings peace. In both incidents: God came to bring peace or was the sign of peace. God brings order out of chaos – both in nature and in our personal lives. We can sit on the shore of our lake and find God present in the lapping of the waves. -Or feel His strength in the warmth of the sun. -Or see His splendor in the sunrise or sunset over the water. The creating power of God is always evident in the forceful or the majestic. What God really wants is to come into our lives and create the peace and harmony that are his gifts to us. If we allow ourselves to be taken over by God, if we open ourselves up to his creative power, we will be creating space for his peace to dwell within us. St Paul tells us that nothing can come between us and love of God, and if we are his dwelling places this is true. The world may be raging around us but we can experience that deep-seated peace which is the sign of his indwelling. $5,713.33 SECOND COLLECTION LAST WEEK: Holy Father/Peter’s Pence $1,499.23 SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEK: Building Maintenance Fund ____________________________________________ Peace be with you, …and with your spirit. __Father Ron ________________________________________ MASS INTENTIONS — August 9 - 17: Sat 9 5:00 For the People of the Parish Sun 10 7:30 For Family 10:15 +Matt Lenney Mon 11 9:00 Communion Service Tues 12 9:00 +Cecilia and Walter Conrad Wed 13 9:00 +Richard Huffman Thurs 14 9:00 Intentions of Pat LaRussa Fri 15 9:00 Intentions of the Celebrant Sat 16 5:00 For the People of the Parish Sun 17 7:30 +Anthony J.
