ANDRÉ CARVALHO GROUP
The bassist and composer André Carvalho, a native from Portugal,
recently relocated to New York. With two releases under his name,
Carvalho has been intensely dedicated to composition since he first
picked up the bass. He has a special vision in conjuring his own groups
and he is currently preparing and composing for his first stateside
release.
His first two albums, "Hajime" and "Memória de Amiba" show Carvalho´s
highly personal perspective in music featuring an original blend of
contemporary jazz with elements from Portuguese music. Both projects
got raving reviews from Portuguese and International media.
André was awarded the prize "Carlos Paredes" in 2012, a prestigious
prize that recognizes Portuguese music projects, as well as a "Best
Group" recognition in the Bucharest International Jazz Competition.
For the past few years, André has also been an important presence in
the European Jazz scene. As a leader of his band or as a versatile
sideman, he has toured Portugal, Spain, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Italy,
Slovenia, Romania, Serbia and Egypt.

Carvalho may well have taken his inspiration
from a tiny, shapeless, creature, but “Memória De
Amiba” is impressively well-structured. The
septet plays with finesse. Carvalho’s writing offers
scope for different textures and layers of sound
that often give the sensation of a much larger
ensemble, but he’s not afraid to give space to
just one or two players at a time, creating some
memorable performances as a result.

Released right near the end of 2013, it was too
late to consider this album for my Best of 2013
list, as my cutoff (and that of many other
reviewers) typically runs from November to
November. However, this album will get some
attention when the Best of 2014 lists start getting
compiled.

BIO – ANDRÉ CARVALHO
André studied in Lisbon, both
classical (with Fernando Flores)
and Jazz, before going to Vienna,
Austria where he took his bachelor
degree in Classical Double Bass at
the prestigious Universitat fur
Musik und darstellend Kunst Wien,
in Josef Niederhammer’s class.
Once in Vienna, André had the
change to play with many local jazz
musicians as well as many classical
orchestras, such as Orquestra
Ibero-Americana (under Gustavo
Dudamel), Orquestra Sinfónica
Juvenil, Webern Orchestra (under
Franz Welser-Möst and Heinrich Schiff), Orquestra Academica Metropolitana
(under Michael Zilm).
Currently, André is taking his Master degree at Manhattan School of Music,
where he studies, among others, with Jay Anderson, Phil Markowitz and
David Liebman under a Fulbright scholarship.
André also had the opportunity to attend master classes, workshops and
private lessons with Danilo Perez, Ben Street, Ari Hoenig, Rudresh
Mahanthappa, Ben Monder, Ari Hoenig, Pete Rende, André Fernandes,
Orlando Le Fleming, Joe Sanders, Matt Brewer, Jim McNelly, Matt Penman,
Guillermo Klein, Demian Cabaud, Mário Laginha, Johannes Strasser, Carlos
Bica, Carlos Barretto.
André has played with Chris Cheek, Colin Stranahan, Tommy Crane, André
Matos, Jure Pukl, Vinnie Sperrazza, Mário Laginha, Gianni Gagliardi, Shawn
Baltazor, Gonçalo Marques, Mário Delgado, Maria João, Afonso Pais,
Vladimir Kostadinovic, Matthias Loescher, Bruno Santos, André Santos,
André Sousa Machado, Jeffery Davis, Jaka Kopac, Martin Reiter, Bertl Meyer,
Wolfi Rainer, Júlio Resende, Jorge Reis, Kaja Draskler, Philipp Gropper, Art
Themen, European Movement Jazz Orchestra, Hot Clube Portugal Big Band,
Filipe Melo, Carlos do Carmo, Cristina Branco, Paula Sousa, Ricardo Toscano,
etc.
André also holds a bachelor in Computer Engineering from Faculdade de
Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa.
