Programma - Internationaal Danstheater
Originated in the early 19th century in shabby cafes in the harbor, where the peculiarity of the uncertain life were sung: sadness, faith, infidelity, the desire of freedom, but also the hope and love for each other. The passionate, sometimes sad fado music is inextricably linked with Portugal and holds a special place in the life of the Portuguese. FADO is a coproduction of the International Dance Theatre with Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo ( CPBC ) in Lisbon, Portugal. Together with choreographer Vasco Wellenkamp the dancers take the fado music as the basis for an expressive approach of this powerful music. The Portuguese dancers will dance in FADO until March 7th, then they will go on tour with their colleagues in Portugal with the same performance. De Dutch dancers will perform the rest of the tour in the Netherlands. The dance performance FADO is completed by the live music of the Portuguese fado singer Carla Pires and her guitarists. In 2012, she mesmerized audiences with her beautiful voice in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The history of fado There are many theories on the origins of Fado. Some believe that its roots lie in Portugal from the Arab influence that was exerted on the Iberian Peninsula. Others maintain that these were songs sung by slaves taken by the Portuguese to Brazil in the sixteenth century. The word fado is derived from the Latin fatum, which means fate. In the world there is no other music that cultivates melancholy and fatalism as fado music. 4 The fado music is an expression of the slaves’ sadness, pain and mourning over the separation from their people. Upon returning from these arduous journeys, the Portuguese sailors found themselves captivated by the songs that mimicked the undulating rhythm of the ocean waves and recreated them in the taverns of Lisbon. In the early years, the fado was sung in bars and brothels and a fadista was not much more than a swindler or a beggar. When poets and intellectuals also showed interest in the music, fado lost the association with prostitution, crime and pubs in the early 20th century. Fado experienced a golden period around 1930 when the dictator Salazar took power. He held the Portuguese people calm with the three F’s: Futebol , Fátima e Fado (football, Our Lady of Fátima and fado). The fadistas enjoyed the luxuries and pleasures of the dictatorship, but who thwarted disappeared in the dungeons of the secret police. The revolution in 1974 brought an end to the glory of the fado. It was not until the nineties that the music became popular again with the rise of a new generation fadistas and an international breakthrough followed. Since 2011, the fado is even included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, the cultural agency of the UN. 5 Artistiek leider/Artistic intendant Vasco Wellenkamp Productieleider/Production manager Andrea Velasquez INTERNATIONALE BOEKINGEN Booking United States and North America PMI Arts www.pmiarts.com / foto id op maat henk jan kamerbeek PARTNERS Stichting De Doelen / illustratie si lin dana dool Graag willen wij bedanken/We would like to thank: CPBC, Ocarina Music/Joaquim Balas en Ana Abrantes, Portugese Ambassade in Den Haag, Area Metropolitana de Lisboa, ABN AMRO/Bram de Jaeger, Teresa Brito-Adao CPBC foto’s voorstelling robert benschop Having studied dance since 1961 with Margarida de Abreu and Fernando Lima of the Verde Gaio group, Wellenkamp entered the Gulbenkian Ballet in 1968 and was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Education in 1973 to study at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York earning a degree in Modern Dance. What strikes me as important is the emotional truth and dramatic force that it confronts us with. The choreographic vision that I have for Fado will be free from literal illustration. The poetical emotion of its themes will be the raw material for my working processes. Graça Barroso, one of the best dancers from Portugal and co-founder of CPBC died in June last year. If a seagull came to bring me the Lisbon sky in a drawing it would make, In that sky where the gaze is a wing that does not fly, but fades and falls to the sea. The perfect heart hammering in my chest, my love in your hand, in that hand where my heart fitted perfectly. If a Portuguese seaman, travelling the seven seas, were perhaps the first to tell me what he invented, if newly bright eyes were interlinked with my eyes. The perfect heart hammering in my breast, my love in your hand, in that hand where my heart fitted perfectly. If to say goodbye to life all the birds of the sky, bade me farewell your last glance, that glance that only you could give, the first love. The perfect heart would die in my breast my love in your hand, in that hand where my heart beats perfectly. C 6. Cavalo à solta 7. Leer, mijn hart/Learn, my heart Tekst/Lyrics Rosa Lobato Faria / Muziek/Music Mário Pacheco Lied van de wind en de aarde/Song of the wind and the earth Tekst & Muziek/Lyrics & Music José Manuel Coelho Quem me quiser há-de saber as conchas A cantiga dos búzios e do mar Quem me quiser há-de saber as ondas E a verde tentação de naufragar Wie mij wil moet de schelpen kennen Het lied van de wulken en van de zee Wie mij wil moet de golven kennen En de groene uitdaging aan te gaan om te verzinken in zee Anyone who wants to love me has to know about shells The song of the whelks and the sea Anyone who wants me has to know about waves And the unplanned temptation of sinking at sea Meu amor vem de longe, de lá da serra Meu amor vem cansado de tanto andar Ouviu pelo caminho a voz da terra E sonhou na distãncia que vai voltar Mijn geliefde komt van ver, van achter de bergen Mijn geliefde is moe van het lange reizen Hij hoorde onderweg de stem van de aarde En hij droomde, daar ver weg, van zijn terugkeer My love comes from far back, from beyond the mountains My love is weary from so much walking On the road he heard the voice of the earth And he dreamt of the distance of his way home Quem me quiser há-de saber as fontes A laranjeira em flor, a cor do feno A saudade lilás que há nos poentes O cheiro da maçã que há no inverno Wie mij wil moet de bronnen kennen De bloeiende sinaasappelboom, de kleur van hooi De paarse heimwee bij zonsondergang De geur van appels in de winter Anyone who wants to love me has to know about springs Orange blossom, the colour of hay The lilac yearning of our sunsets The scent of apples in winter Meu amor é o vento que sopra forte E para lá do tempo ele vai partir Meu amor é o vento que vem do norte E para onde for também quero ir Mijn geliefde is de wind die hard blaast Die vertrekt als de tijd is verstreken Mijn geliefde is de wind uit het noorden Waar hij heen gaat wil ik ook gaan My love is a strong gust of wind And it will go beyond time My love is a wind that comes from the north And wherever it leads I too shall follow Quem me quiser há-de saber a chuva Que põe colares de pérolas nos ombros Há-de saber os beijos e as uvas Há-de saber as asas e os pombos Wie mij wil moet de regen kennen Die parelsnoeren om je schouders legt Weten van kussen en van druiven Weten van vleugels en van duiven Anyone who wants to love me has to know about the rain That lays necklaces of pearls on our shoulders They have to know about kisses and grapes They have to know about wings and pigeons O vento do norte Beijou o convés Quis sonhar a terra Encher às mares De noordenwind Kuste het dek Wilde de aarde dromen En de getijden vullen The wind of the north Kissed the deck I wanted to dream of the earth Full of tides Quem me quiser há-de saber a espuma Em que sou um turbilhão subitamente Ou então não saber coisa nenhuma E embalar-me ao peito, simplesmente Wie mij wil moet het schuim kennen Waarin ik plots een werveling ben Of hij moet helemaal nergens van weten En me alleen zachtjes wiegen tegen zijn borst Anyone who wants to love me has to know about the spray In which suddenly I find myself in turmoil Otherwise they know nothing whatsoever And simply clasp me to their chest Por entre o alecrim ele desceu da serra E cantou com o povo esta saudade De viver na distância a sua terra E num cravo vermelho a liberdade Omringd door rozemarijn kwam hij uit de bergen En samen met het volk zong hij van heimwee, Van het leven, ver weg van huis Van de vrijheid in een rode anjer Through the rosemary he came down from the mountain And sang with the people this yearning To live at a distance from his earth And in a red carnation of freedom Ouviu cantar ao longe, era a cigarra A desfolhar num verso, a sólidão E com a voz já rouca, estra guitarra Fez da terra e do vento, esta canção Hij hoorde van verre gezang, het was de krekel Die in een vers van de eenzaamheid verhaalde Zijn stem was al schor, die gitaar Maakte van de aarde en de wind dit lied I heard singing in the distance, it was a cicada Offering up verses, in solitude And with a voice now husky, this guitar Makes from the earth and the wind, this song Vento que vens do morte Que sopras forte vem acordar A canção do amor Esta terra em flor Este meu cantar Wind uit het noorden Je blaast zo hard Kom en wek Het liefdeslied Dit land in bloei Mijn gezang Oh wind that comes from death That blows in gusts Comes to awaken The song of love This earth in blossom Is my song 10. Barco negro Letra David Mourão Ferreira / Música Caco Velho / Piratini F Canção do vento e da terra Letra e música de José Manuel Coelho Zwarte boot/Black ship Tekst/Lyrics David Mourão Ferreira / Muziek/Music Caco Velho / Piratini De manhã, que medo que me achasses feia Acordei tremendo, deitada na areia Mas logo os teus olhos disseram que não E o sol penetrou no meu coração In de ochtend bang dat je me lelijk vinden zou Rillend werd ik wakker, liggend in het zand Maar in je ogen las ik van niet En de zon brak door in mijn hart In the morning I fear I woke up trembling, lying on the sand But then your eyes said that this was not so And the sun penetrated my heart Vi depois numa rocha uma cruz E o teu barco negro dançava na luz Vi teu braço acenando entre as velas já soltas Dizem as velhas da praia... que não voltas São loucas... são loucas Toen zag ik op een rots een kruis En je zwarte boot danste in het licht Tussen de gehesen zeilen zag ik het wuiven van je hand De oude vrouwen op het strand zeggen dat je niet terugkomt Ze zijn gek, helemaal gek Then I saw a cross on a rock And your black boat danced in the light I saw your hand waving among the billowing sails scattered The old women on the beach say… that you are not coming back They are crazy… they are crazy Eu sei meu amor Que nem chegaste a partir Pois tudo em meu redor Me diz que estás sempre comigo Ik weet, mijn liefste, dat je niet echt bent vertrokken Want alles om me heen vertelt me dat je altijd bij me bent I know my love That you did not yet leave As everything around me Tells me that you are always with me No vento que lança areia nos vidros Na água que canta, no fogo mortiço No calor do leito, nos bancos vazios Dentro do meu peito estás sempre comigo In de wind die zand tegen de ramen blaast In het zingende water, in het smeulend vuur In de warmte van het bed, op de lege banken Diep in mijn hart ben je altijd bij mij In the wind that blos sand against the windows In the water that sings, in the fire with its dying embers In the warmth of the bed, in the empty benches Deep in my heart you are always with me G 12. Prece Tekst/Lyrics Paulo Abreu Lima / Muziek/Music Carla Pires Van buiten ben je een rivier, misschien de Taag De oevers van de bedding die ik altijd begeer Van binnen een hoge zee uit een tijd waarnaar ik verlang In de golven op het strand die eindigen in een kus From the outside you are a river that could be the Tagus the banks of the bed that I always desire on the inside the high sea of a time that I envy on the waves of the seashore torn apart by a kiss Van buiten ben je een boot die verlangt naar de kade Die zodra je uitvaart nooit meer slaapt Van binnen een meeuw die veel meer wil In de armen van de wind en zijn wervelingen From the outside you are a boat thirsting for the quay that never ever sleeps on all your travels on the inside a seagull that wants to be much more than the arms of its gusting winds Vlieg hoog, Waar mijn ogen je niet bereiken En anderen al verdwaalden In het wachten Fly high, to the place where my eyes do not reach and others already have lost themselves waiting Vlieg hoog, Ook al zie je diep beneden Wie weet, het dak van de wereld En droom ... Fly high even if to the bottom or maybe the roof of the world and dream… Ik wil gaan, Ook al is mijn vleugel lam Hoe moeilijk het afscheid ook is, Varen I want to go, even with a wounded wing even if the departure is painful, sail En vliegen, Zeven huizenhoge golven Met matrozen, vissersvrouwen, Laat me gaan ... And fly, seven towering waves with sailors, fishwives, let me go… Perhaps I shall die on the beach Surrounded in this disastrous dip By all the spray of the beach Like a priest who faints In the middle of his flock Misschien sterf ik op straat En lig ik daar opeens In een koude, maanloze nacht Verwant aan de straatstenen Door iedereen vertrapt. Perhaps I shall die in the street And suddenly find myself In the cold of night without moonlight And I throw the stones of the road Trodden by everyone. Perhaps I shall die behind bars In the middle of a prison Because the world beyond the bars Has failed to remember the yearning That gnaws at my heart. Misschien sterf ik in de nacht Een natuurlijke dood Mijn armen gekruist op mijn borst Uit Gods hand aanvaard ik alles Maar laat me sterven in Portugal. Perhaps I shall die at night A time when death is natural My hands crossed on my chest I will accept everything from the hands of God But do let me die in Portugal.
