Translation of the video lesson
This time we are here for lesson BL-024 in which we are going to be checking out some
licks using Position Four Minor Pentatonic and the Blues Scale.
The licks that we are going to be doing are these. Lick number one sounds like this . . .
Lick number two sounds like this . . . Lick number three sounds like this . . . Lick
number four sounds like this . . . I am playing them kind of fast. You can play these
slowly as well. And lick number five is this one. Pretty weird one . . . Which I will explain
a little bit more when we go to a close up. Let's start off with a close up of lick one. Here
we go.

OK, lick number one was this . . . Now this one is a really cool little trick here. What we
are doing is we are putting the first finger on the twelfth fret, second finger on the
thirteenth fret and we going to put a curl just on the thirteen. Rhythm for this is going
one, two, three and four and. The first two is beats one and two . . . Normally my
fingers would be kind of holding over but I am just pulling them back so you can see.
First finger is staying where it is and second finger is doing the little curl . . .

And we finish, third finger is now going on the fourteenth fret of the third string and we
are putting it down a little bit flatter than normal because it is going to play there and

Lick number two is this . . . Now this one we are starting with a bend with the third

have got a release in there as well. So we are doing bend . . . play the note . . . And you
can see that at the same time I am hitting that one I am also muting the bent note but I
am muting it with the picking hand . . . So at that point you can hear that the bend
disappears and that is because I am allowing my picking hand to touch that second
string.

Into lick number three. Lick number three is starting with a tone bend from the note G.
Third finger, fifteenth fret, thinnest string . . . Then it is coming back down so again we
are using our picking hand to mute the string at the top so we don't get seagulls. If you

using a third finger to first finger flick off. Fifteenth fret to twelfth fret . . . Third finger is
moving over to the fifteenth fret on the second string and then back to first finger on
the thinnest string . . . At this point we are using second finger now on the note C,
which is the thirteenth fret, which gets a curl . . . And finishing with the third finger on
the root note which is fourteenth fret, third string . . . Nice and slow . . . A little faster . .
. It can be quite fast . . .

Lick number four we are using our Blue Note again “right off the bat” (at the start) with
a hammer on and flick off . . . So that's the twelfth fret of the fourth string. Hammering
on second finger onto the thirteenth, flicking it off again . . . Then picking little finger,
fifteenth fret on the fifth string . . . Now we have got here a little string of hammer ons
going through the Blue Note which is first, second, third fingers. Twelfth, thirteenth,
fourteenth fret on the D string . . .

curl . . . And finishing back on the root note. So we have this . . . Very nice little lick.
Again, nice and slow . . . A little faster . . . Faster again . . . And really fast . . .

Lick number five. This one is using a little trick that we use sometimes. It is called
playing in fourths. I think of it as two sides. Like this would be the second side . . . And
this the first side . . . And we are playing these two notes like . . . That's the pattern. So
if you thought of it like a little box we are kind of going up the box, back and then down
the box. Going round a little square there . . . And you can do the same thing on the
next set of strings . . . And the next set . . . You see there is the little pattern . . .

Now that is as far as we are taking it with this pattern but also that would normally be
played as either sixteenth notes or eighth notes because it is a four note pattern. But to
make it a little more interesting I have turned them into triplets. So you get quite a
different feel having this . . . one-trip-let, two-trip-let, three-trip-let, four-trip-let . . . It
makes it kind of weird. Disguising the fact that it is a four note pattern . . . And then to
finish it we have got . . . We are just shifting out of position for that note. Nice and
slow . . . Every note is picked. A little faster . . . And a little faster again . . .
