1. INTRODUCTION
José B. Volpon received his medical degree in 1974 from the Ribeirão Preto School
of Medicine, University of São Paulo, Brazil. This was followed by a residency training
in Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology at the same Institution. In 1978, he completed a
trauma training in A.O technique, in St. Gallen, Switzerland, under the tutorial of Dr. B.
G. Weber. In the same year, he visited the Orthopaedic Clinic Wichemhaus, Altdorf,
Germany, to learn with Prof. Heinz Wagner his technique on bone lengthening.
Afterwards, he traveled to Oxford, England, at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, to
follow the activities coordinated by Mr. Duthie.
Returning home, he was appointed to the faculty of the University of São Paulo in
Ribeirão Preto, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology (1979) taking in
charge a busy clinic dealing with general problems in orthopaedics and trauma. In 1980,
he received his Ph. D. from the same University and organized a clinic on pediatric
orthopaedics and fractures, which currently is considered one of the most complete in the
country. In March 2000 he organized a clinic on Foot affections an another one on
Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma at the University Hospital of School of Medicine of
Ribeirão Preto which are, presently, under his supervision.
In 1982, he was awarded the J. Trueta Prize offered by the Girdlestone Society,
Oxford, England, and spent time in the Nuffield Othopaedic Hospital (Mr. Fuller) and in
Owestry, at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital under the tutorial of
Mr. O’Connor. He also spent one month with Mr. Catterall at the Royal National
Orthopaedic Hospital, London.
Dr. Volpon is currently an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with a special
interest in pediatric orthopaedics and traumatology, and foot conditions. He completed a
3
fellowship in Shoulder Affections, in 1987, at the Orthopaedic Department of the
University of Texas in San Antonio, TX, USA (Prof. Rockwood). After coming back to
Brazil, he organized at the University Hospital a clinic on shoulder problems which is
now running by the Hand Clinics.
In 1991-1992, Dr. Volpon did his research fellowship on biomechanics at the
Orthopaedic Surgery Research Laboratory in the University of Alabama at Birmingham
under the tutorial of Prof. Jack Lemons and, in 1992 he completed his advanced training
in shoulder with Prof. Uribe, University of Miami, FL, USA.
In November 2004 he was appointed Chief of the Laboratory of Bioengineering of
School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Brazil.
In December 2005 he was appointed a member of the Specialty Academic Council
AO Foundation.
Dr. Volpon’s current clinical practice and research interests involve the biomechanics
of the growing locomotor system, pediatric orthopaedics (hip, developmental anomalies,
foot), foot conditions (biomechanics, deformities) and fractures. His professional
responsibilities also involve activities with undergraduate students, post-graduate
students and residency training.
He is the present Chief Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics and
member of the editorial board of the Brazilian Journal of Orthopaedics and of the Acta
Ortopedica Brasileira.
His professional membership affiliations include the Brazilian Society of Orthopaedic
Surgery, the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Orthopaedics, the Société Internationale de
Recherche Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SIROT), the Société Internationale de
Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT), and the Brazilian Society of Foot
Surgery.
Presently, the most important research projects are:
1Development of a unilateral external fixator with controlled stiffness to treat
diaphyseal long bone fractures of the lower limbs in the multiple injured
child.
2Development of an intramedullary fixation system to stabilize percutaneous
derrotational osteotomy of the proximal femur in children.
3Development of a plate fixation system with controlled angulation to stabilize
proximal femoral osteotomies in children.
4Development of an external fixator to correct rotational malalignment of
lower limb bones without osteotomy.
5The use of alendronate in the prevention of disuse osteopenia induced in rats.
6The effect of alendronate in the fixation of metallic implants in osteoporotic
bones in rats.
