Dear Parents
The International School of the Algarve has been working in the field of education since 1972 and has
already acquired a considerable reputation for quality teaching.
The International School of the Algarve was established in 1972 by a group of local residents led by Paul and
Eva Schelfhout to provide an education for the growing Portuguese and International community in the
Algarve.
The School, fully co-educational, is aproximately 600 students strong - boys and girls (ages 3 to 18).
The School is situated in Lagoa, on the Main East-West coastal road (EN125) and is served by 9 private
charter coaches from: Budens, Lagos, Silves, Messines, Albufeira, Boliqueime, Vilamoura, Loulé and Faro.
The International airport at Faro is approximately 40 minutes from the School.

The Northern Hemisphere school calendar is followed: the School Year beginning in September and ending
in June of the following year. We operate a 3 term year.
There are two sections: the International Section, Pre-Reception to Year 13 (ages 3 to 18) where students
work towards UK GCSEs and A Levels and the National Section (ages 6 to 18) where students work towards
Portuguese National Qualifications.
In the International Section the early years are organised to deliver a bi-lingual curriculum
(English/Portuguese). Thereafter a modified English National Curriculum is taught. The National Section
follows the Portuguese National Curriculum.
The majority of our pupils (98,8%) go to university
in Portugal or the UK, some gain places in the
USA or Canada as well as in a variety of other EU
countries.

Class Sizes - EFL - Buddy-Buddy - Work Experience
Class Sizes: In order to provide high quality education, regarding each student as a unique individual, we
actively seek to have an average class size of 16. For A-level classes it is our commitment for optimum
academic achievement we have an average class size of 6.
EFL: Within the school there is a wide diversity of cultures, languages and educational experience,
therefore, the school has an English as a foreign language department staffed with highly qualified
specialist teachers. These teachers provide aditional support, liaising closely with subject specialists to offer
differentiated materials and essential one to one inductions to English.
Buddy-Buddy: All pupils that arrive new to the school will be partnered with a class mate of the same sex.
This is to facilitate his/her integration into the school.
Work Experience: As part of our ongoing ‘’Careers Programme’’, each year all Year 10 students (14/15) are
given the opportunity to be in a ‘’working environment’’ outside of school during ‘work experience week’.
The aims of the week are for students to have the opportunity to sample a job area, industry or profession
and to experience the ‘working environment’.

Our Pre School is a truly bi-lingual section of the school. Pre-Reception, Reception and Year1 age range
from (3 to 6 years of age). Each class has two full time staff, a teacher and a teaching assistant. The children
will be guided to develop the skills and competencies required by both Portuguese and English systems. In
this way they will be better prepared for the increasingly globalised world that will be their future.

Boarding
We are very proud to anounce the opening of our Boarding House for September 2013. The Boarding House
is near the school and is situated in the premises of a converted hotel. It overlooks one of the most beautiful
beaches in the world .
- From 12 to 14 Years of age (2 to a room).
- From 14 to 18 years - single rooms are available.
- All rooms have en-suite bathrooms.
- All new arrivals will have a two day induction programme.
- Medical insurance is mandatory under the School´s provided
policy.
- Guardianship provision is obligatory. The School will provide this at
no extra charge for exeat weekend and half terms.

The Catering Department, with the support of a Nutritional Engineer, has established high levels of
nutritional quality, all the meals served to pupils being of the variety, quantity and balance suitable for
youngsters of school age.

countryside and includes as part of its sport facilities:
one official rollerblading rink, one 7-a-side football
field, two 5-a-side football fields, two volleyball
courts, five basketball courts, two tennis courts, one
cross-country track, a small gym and a karate dojo.

School teams compete against other local schools
through the officially promoted Schools Sports
Organisation. Football, Basketball, Tennis, Karate,
Rollerblading and Gymnastics fall within this
organisation.

In addition there are a number of competitions against the other International Schools from all over
Portugal.

The School’s Sports Club is a leading team in the official Portuguese National rollerblading championship.

Physical Education and Music are taught by specialists throughout the School. Information Technology is
introduced in the Pre School and developed in the following years. These subjects are an integral part of
what the School offers at all ages.
Music, Drama and the Arts play a significant role in school life. We offer an extensive Music Programme
including: piano, violin, viola, violoncello, flute, recorder, saxophone, clarinet, singers, trumpet, guitar
classical and guitar electric, run by our Director of Music Ms. Gita Nasta A.G.S.M. Academy of Music. A
variety of concerts, plays and exhibitions are prepared each year. Some of these take place at the school,
whilst others are performed at large local public venues.
