[email protected], [email protected] – Calvino Mainieri Wood Collection
The Calvino Mainieri Wood Collection (BCTw), one of the largest and most important wood
collections in Latin America, is commemorating its 82nd anniversary this year. The collection was
started in 1930 and continues today. The most important contributor and manager was Agronomic
Engineer Calvino Mainieri from which the collection gets its name. Many others contributed to the
collection and now the collection has achieved national and international importance. Today the
collection has approximately 18.000 wood specimens, representing 3.700 species and 1.100 genera.
Most of the specimens are native to the north (40%) and southwest (30%) regions of Brazil but,
approximately 30% of the specimens are from others countries. There is an associated microscope
slide collection with almost 12.000 slides from the wood specimens. Since its beginning, the purpose of
the collection is (1) to provide technical support for the Brazilian wood market and industry; (2) to
provide standards for botanical identification from commercial woods used by the construction,
furniture and others forest products sectors; (3) to support training in wood anatomy and identification
and (4) to supply material especially sectioning blocks for academic studies related to wood anatomy.
Since 2004, specimen information (names, collection location and date, collector and numbers,
herbarium material etc.) is available online at the website of the Reference Center on Environmental
Information – CRIA (http://www.splink.org.br). We hope to continually expand the collection and the
cooperation with others institutions on research projects on new techniques for wood anatomy and
identification and to search for new wood species to replace those that are in short supply or are over
utilized.
