Desafios...
• Adversidades despertam capacidades que, em outras

Center For Research, Technology and
Education in Vitreous Materials
CeRTEV´s activities will focus on
multidisciplinary, relevant glass science, useful
technology and efficient education and outreach!
SCOPE
CeRTEV will research and develop or improve glasses and glass-ceramics
presenting application-relevant functionalities, such as high mechanical strength
and electrical conductivity, biological, optical or catalytic activity, and/or
combinations of these properties.
A fundamental understanding of these properties will be sought on the basis of
the structural organization of these materials on different length scales. We will
apply state-of-the art NMR, EPR, EXAFS and vibrational spectroscopy to
characterize the local and medium-range order, as well as the full resolution
range of optical and electron microscopies, XRD and microanalyses for
elucidating nano- and microstructures. This comprehensive experimental
approach will be complemented by molecular dynamics simulations.
Using this experimental modeling strategy, we will further seek a fundamental
understanding of glass sintering and crystallization in terms of the mechanisms,
thermodynamics and kinetics of viscous flow, as well as crystal nucleation and
growth, enabling us to exercise control of these processes by developing
appropriate formation and thermal treatment protocols.
In a concerted effort, the participating laboratories will jointly investigate a
number of important benchmark systems, which are deemed particularly
promising for applications either as structural materials (e.g., dental and armor
glass-ceramics), bio active glasses and glass-ceramics, glass-ceramics for
architecture and construction, optical materials (e.g., laser glasses), materials for
electrochemical energy storage devices (electrolytes, high-temperature seals),
and catalytically active systems.

Our philosophy
 To pursue relevant research topics with well defined
objectives.
 To carry out long term basic research. To reach and
expand the frontiers of knowledge in each one of the
chosen subjects.
 Maximize planning, calculation, simulation, literature
search and study to optimize experimentation.
 To publish original, accurate articles that push the
frontiers of knowledge. Quality, and not quantity, is
our goal.
 Technological research via industrial interest that may
lead to patents and eventually innovation

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Creation of the first technical course in South
America
Being aware of the lack of professional
training course dedicated to the glass industry,
with the partnership of Paula Souza Center,
we proposed to create a technical course to
provide trained professionals for the glass
industry.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
What we have done so far:
First meeting: presentation of our project CeRTEV and Education and
outreach project to ABIVIDRO
Second Meeting: Joint meeting with ABIVIDRO and Paula Souza Center
- ABIVIDRO confirmed to Paula Souza Center the urgent need for
professional qualification, specially at technical level, to the glass industry.
Paula Souza Center asked to describe all technical positions (cargos
técnicos)
Third meeting: we described the technical positions for the glass (flat and
hollow ) fabrication , glass transformation, and also glass specification for
construction
Next step: a memorandum of agreement between ABIVIDRO, Paula
Souza Center and CeRTEV, aiming the consolidation of this new technical
course must be prepared and signed
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Already done:
-ACIEPE: Engineers and Scientists of the Future - UFSCar
program aiming to demonstrate to elementary school students of
São Carlos the basis of “scientific thinking”, aiming to attract them
to the field of engineering and hard sciences.
-Meeting and agreement with the Secretary of Science and
Technology of São Carlos: participation in the program “Science
at School”
Same program with Araraquara
-School visits to LaMaV – glass melting, short talks and video
demonstrations to hundreds of high school students from all over
the State of São Paulo… (UFSCar open day and more…)
Plans for 2014-2015
-Offer the first class of the Paula Souza Center technical course in
2015
-Produce a video-course for architects about the fundamentals of
glasses and its specifications for architectural building.
-Create a collection of demonstrational functional glasses
such as: electrically conducting glass, fotosensitive (PTRG) glass,
invisible gass, optical fiber, thermal strain in glass, metallic glass,
sugar glass…
How to use these functional glasses outside our classroom?
Physical Museum – planed for 2015
São Paulo (International) School of Structure, Crystallization and
Properties of Glasses – planed for 2015
