And what about colour? What place does it have? And grey? Is there a place for grey? Or will there be any place for something other than grey? Universal interrogations that have been present in all places and time. Promoted by the “Escola das Artes” (School of Arts) from “Universidade Católica Portuguesa”, this Festival assumes an aesthetics that makes it unique, defying, awaited, and participated. The Festival has demonstrated increasing quality in the audiovisual world. As a School ruled by accuracy, humanism and diversity, we contribute to the incoming of works from the whole world. This has happened once more this year. The works in competition incorporate this philosophy, using the aesthetic of black and the white, merging the dynamics of technology and art, creating a language inspired by tradition and opened to new expressions and to the future. In this fourth edition, where I assume the Presidency of the Festival for the first time, I dream with a strengthened edition that contributes for the affirmation of the Black&White Festival in the audiovisuals and arts scene. Thanks to the participation of all and everyone. E o cinzento? The B&W Audiovisual Festival A Organização do Festival Audiovisual B&W > PT | Festival Audiovisual Black&White - Quarta Edição Welcome to the 4th edition of the Black&White Audiovisual Festival. We feel that our commitment to the Festival's ultimate goal is being reinforced by the contribution of more and more artists that apply from all over the world. Each year, each new edition gathers more works, and also better works at our competition. And we feel proud. This year, we will have the most interesting competition since the foundation of our Festival. This only could happen because there's a renewed and improved awareness about the possibilities of the b&w aesthetics. And the expression of that artistic awareness happens here. Among us. Again, the Festival is not only about competition. It's about celebration and gathering. That's why we would like to stress the moments our Festival provides to congregate ideas and to party: Coffee Talks and B&W Nights. Thanks to everyone who comes to enjoy this moment with us. We would like also to express our gratitude to our Honorary President, the Director Manoel de Oliveira. > EN | The Black&White Audiovisual Festival - Fourth Edition Sejam benvindos à 4ª edição do Festival Audiovisual Black&White. E a expressão dessa consciência acontece aqui. Entre nós. No Festival B&W. 4ª EDIÇÃO B&W || B&W’S 4TH EDITION | 05 06 | PRÉMIOS || AWARDS TROFÉU B&W | B&W TROFHY > PT ENTREGA DE PRÉMIOS Auditório Ilídio Pinho 21 ABRIL | 21.45 > EN AWARDS Auditório Ilídio Pinho APRIL 21 | 21.45 > PT | PRÉMIOS B&W > EN | B&W AWARDS Melhor Vídeo Ficção | Ibertelco / Sony Melhor Vídeo Documentário | Ibertelco / Sony Melhor Vídeo Animação | Ibertelco / Sony Melhor Vídeo Experimental | Ibertelco / Sony Melhor Vídeo Musical | Ibertelco / Sony Prémio do Público | Premiere Best Fiction Video Ibertelco / Sony Best Documentary Video Ibertelco / Sony Best Animation Video Ibertelco / Sony Best Experimental Video Ibertelco / Sony Best Music Video Ibertelco / Sony Audience Award | Premiere Melhor Fotografia | Fnac Prémio Jovem | Instituto Português da Juventude Best Photography | Fnac Young Award | Instituto Português da Juventude Melhor Áudio Ficção | Yamaha Música Melhor Áudio Documentário | Yamaha Música Melhor Áudio Experimental | Yamaha Música Prémio do Público | Yamaha Música Best Fiction Audio | Yamaha Música Best Documentary Audio | Yamaha Música Best Experimental Audio | Yamaha Música Audience Award | Yamaha Música Grande Prémio B&W Big B&W Prize SPOT TV || TV SPOT | 07 Em 1988, um Boilen determinado começou a bater à porta da NPR (National Public Rádio) todos os dias, tentando contribuir para a emissora com a sua habilidade radiofónica e musical. Em 1985, o “Washington City Paper” elegeu Boilen “Performance Artist of the Year” Um músico eletrónico, recebeu uma concessão da Washington D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities para trabalhar em música electrónica e no desempenho performance. Com o “Impossible Theater” Boilen recebeu várias concessões do National Endowment for the Arts. Compôs a música original do genérico do programa “NPR's Talk of the Nation”. > EN | JURY | BOB BOILEN Radio Producer/Broadcaster, U.S.A. > PT | JÚRI | BOB BOILEN Radialista, E.U.A. 10 | JÚRI || JURY In 1988, a determined Boilen started showing up on NPR's doorstep every day, looking for a way to contribute his skills in music and broadcasting to the network. His persistence paid off, and within a few weeks he was hired, on a temporary basis, to work for All Things Considered. Less than a year later, Boilen was directing the show. Significant listener interest in the music being played on All Things Considered, along with his and NPR's vast music collections, gave Boilen the idea to start All Songs Considered. The show extends the NPR music experience online, where listeners can hear full-length versions of music excerpted on NPR News programs and learn more about the music and artists. The show launched in 2000, with Boilen as its host. Before coming to NPR, Boilen found many ways to share his passion for music. From 1982 to 1986 he worked for Baltimore's Impossible Theater, where he held many posts, including composer, playwright, technician, and recording engineer. Boilen became part of music history in 1983 with the Impossible Theater production Whiz Bang, a History of Sound. In it, Boilen became one of the first composers to use audio sampling -- in this case, sounds from nature. In 1985, the Washington City Paper voted Boilen 'Performance Artist of the Year.' An electronic musician, he received a grant from the Washington D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities to work on electronic music and performance. While with Impossible Theater Boilen received a number of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. After Impossible Theater, Boilen worked as a producer for Channel 50, a television station in Washington, D.C. He produced several projects, including a music video show. In 1997, he started producing Science Live for the Discovery Channel. The online show, which he produced for two years, eventually became a television series. He also put out two albums with his psychedelic band, Tiny Desk Unit, during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Longtime NPR fans may remember another contribution Boilen made to NPR. He composed the original theme music for NPR's Talk of the Nation. Mary faces the strange room with mixed feelings of excitement and greed. Could things seem different, had she been a cow? EN > The figure of the assassin dominates contemporary media and cultural history. 'Assassin' explores the seductive spectacle of crime as manifested in cinema through the subjective depiction of the archetypal character of the assassin. 'Assassin' takes as it starting point the plotting of a murder by a couple in love. Using a mosaic of film fragments - clips, music, subtitles, dialogue from French cinema - 'Assassin' creates a new text in which the binding effects of narrative have been dissolved. Part picture puzzle, part fragmented image-sequence the film operates as a form of inner speech, often disconnected and incomplete. By reworking the image and dialogue of these cinematic meta-narratives 'Assassin' restores a singularity to notions of collective memory. PT > Uma porta abre. JOÃO PAULO MENESES Journalist and investigator Many people are disappointed with podcasting, giving reason to those who predicted its death as soon as the technique appeared. This disappointed people appeal to studies, reports and self experience to say that podcasting didn't take off and is still a minority, did not find a way to be commercialized, the quality of programs did not increase and no significant technical evolutions were registered. The disappointment is probably proportional to the initial enthusiasm, what shows that when we speak of new techniques and new technologies some balance and restraint on forecasting is usually of common-sense. Anyway, disillusionment will happen with podcasts and not with podcasting. Who thought that the WEB would get filled with new high quality radio programs, that discouragement wouldn't give birth to initial over enthusiasm of the authors and that excellent revelations would appear every day will be disillusioned. The Podcasts that we know aren't and couldn't be so. Essentially because we are speaking of something very recent, that supposes the domain of some technique carried through in an amateur perspective. Most podcasts we know are like this: funny, many times put a lot of work into, but without a clear objective facing competition. Every day thousand of contents are born on the WEB and the available time to consume these contents is still the same (this has been very poorly studied factor, but cannot continue to be neglected: the idea of “competition” isn't the same, nowadays there are over 50 or 100 radio channels, there are millions of WebPages, thousands of audio channels also on the Internet, millions of musics for downloading; the competition is not only quantitative, but, with as much offers, also qualitative). Podcasts must think which places they can occupy, what's their use, who is listening to them. Of course people will keep doing them for pure pleasure and some of these can still be good but few of these will leave minority. On the other hand podcasting is clearly futuristic technique. Podcasting as a redistribution technique of (audio or video) contents that cannot be heard at the moment they are put available. Radio and TV channels have already started to perceive this. Problems of alleged competition with the original emission are still placed, over all to the level of the contact with the sponsor, but this deals not only with a mental subject (generational), the increasing contact with podcasted programs will change the paradigm. Then we will not only have programs podcasting but also news podcasting. This will materialize, in some way, Bertold Brecht's dream: the receiver will no longer be the passive citizen of communication, but someone who chooses what he wants to see, hear, who constructs its own news, who participates. With podcasting - with this or another name, this or another form - I am able to choose what I want to see and hear. > PT ENCONTRO PODCAST Auditório Ilídio Pinho 21 ABRIL | 16.00 > EN PODCAST MEETING Auditório Ilídio Pinho APRIL 21 | 16.00 SESSÕES NÃO COMPETITIVAS || NON COMPETITIVE SESSIONS | 85 ABOUT ALL SONGS CONSIDERED COMO NO CINEMA ERA UMA VEZ HTTP://WWW.NPR.ORG/PROGRAMS/ASC/ HTTP://COMONOCINEMA.BLOGSPOT.COM/ HTTP://WWW.RECURSOSEB1.COM/ERAUMAVEZ/ HTTP://WWW.PODCOMER.COM/ > PT “All Songs Considered” é um programa online da National Public Radio (NPR E.U.A.). > EN “All Songs Considered is National Public Radio's (U.S.A.) on-line music program. You can listen to music, watch videos and slideshows and hear interviews with NPR reviewers about their favorite CDs. It's a great way to discover and learn more about artists who often don't get much or any airplay. We initially started “All Songs Considered” after receiving countless letters from listeners who wanted to know more about the music played between stories on NPR's evening news program, “All Things Considered”. You can still find full-length versions of some of those interludes here, but “All Songs Considered” has since grown to feature music from all genres, all over the world. We're always in search of great musicians and sometimes ones that are just a lot of fun.” “Como no Cinema” is a series of programmes about diverse themes, mixing sound with voice and music. Themes can range from an aplinist that clibed the Everest, passing by Portugal's tragic marithim story, social and political events, to social, existencial and humanist themes. To do so it uses field sound captures, guest voices, some music, literature in poetry form, prose, short stories or theatre and sound film extracts. Most broadcasts are not located in time and the purpose is to maximize the oniric imaginary of the listeners, making them create their own images. On the Radio everything can be said as it was a film. Because everything in life can be a film, as in the movies. “Era uma vez” is an educative project born from a master's thesis at Universidade do Minho that some months later gained life. It is a resource thought to be heard by children from kindergarden and first years of school, as well as their educatores and teachers. But we think that it can be heard by any one who likes being told stories. The episodes are divided in two parts: a storu/poem and a dialog that has didactic content and asks for listeners participation. The participant's work is often posted at a works gallerie. “podComer” is a website with receipts and cooking tips that has the 1st portuguese cooking podcast and also the portuguese most frequent. Receipts are written and ilustrated on the website but also available on mp3 files and can be heard in mp3 readers, cell phones, computers, pda's. And the most interesting is that the person is totally free to hear them when and where she wants. “podComer was first launched in August 2005 and has today a very significative audience. More tham 1.200 visits a day and an average of more than 1.700 pages watched per day. In 2006 was nominated as one of the top ten podcast blogs in the world on the “The Best of Blogs” (BOBs) contest, anually promoted by the german magazine “Deutsche Welle”. < PT | 4:40 A running against the time: produce film and edit film to 4 minutes in 40 hours, is what we suggest. The first edition of a competition that intends that each participant feels the adrenaline and the pressure of a deadline. Integrated in the Black&White Audiovisual Festival, 4:40 shows-itself as an interesting and healthy complement to the already existing programme. The proposal is simple: the participants, organized in teams, should film and edit, concerning a subject given by the organization, and fulfil the term for the delivery of the works. After a composed Jury by Alexandra Sarapicos (Architect and Teacher of the School of Arts), Mário Moutinho (Actor on Television and Film) and Francisco Carvalho (Director) will chose the best works, not on the basis of an excellent technical expertise, but in the capacities without preparation and apprehension of the plan, as well as the originality of the interpretation of the subject. The winning videos will be exhibited in the session of Saturday, 21 of April, 17H30. The delivery of awards will elapse precisely during that session unfolding in Big Award, Better Photography, Better Argument and Better Edition. The 4:40 appears in this way, more than a competition, but like a challenge.
