It was organized by a Committee (General Secretary, Miguel Telies Antunes; Executive Secretary, Jotio Pais) composed of members of the then "Centro de Estratigrafia e Paleobiologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa". During this Congress, a new RCANS Direction was elected: M. T. Antunes (President),]. Civis / Univ. de Salamanca, Spain and V. Padron / Escuela superior de Geologfa, Minas y Geofisica, Caracas, Venezuela (Vice-Presidents), J. Pais and B. Cahuzac / Univ. Bordeux, France (Secretaries). One of the main aims of the Congress was to dinamize studies about the Atlantic Neogene and its relationships with Mediterranean and other areas. This led us to produce an Abstracts volume (on Boundaries and Correlations; Geodynamic evolution; Biodynamics; General events) (122 p.), a "Ciencias da Terra (UNL), Numero Especial", a Special Volume which is primarily an Excursions Guide but containing syntheses about Neogene: in Portugal, in some regions in Spain; and in Morocco (121 p.). Nevertheless, the need of a better Iawwledge ofAtlantic Neogene researchers and their working fields was felt. In order to fulfill this need, we (July 1993) edited "Researchers Adress, Fields ofInterest / Bibliography List" (55 p.) containing the available data at the time. Furthermore, we difused a circular letter asking for additional data. This allowed us to edit the present volume. We hope that this enlarged and updated version will meet our goal in helping and establishing connections among researchers interested in Atlantic Neogene. Main research results/research in progress: Wold (1992) Through analysis of the Cenozoic sediment mass/age distribution and the change in area of sea floor for the northern North Atlantic (Charlie-Gibbs to Jan Mayen FZ) through time, it can be concluded that there is a deficit of Oligocene to Miocene sediment in the region. The mass of Pliocene to quaternary sediment is much larger than that of the older sediment and may have been derived primarily through the erosion of Eocene and Oligocene sediment by deep-water currents. The sediment drift-portion of the total regional sediment mass, increased significantly 3 times during the Cenozoic. Each of these drift-growth phases, lasted between 3 and 4 m.y. The first two growth phases, from the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene and from the Early to Middle Miocene, were accompanied by northward-shifts of depocenters to the newly-fonning sediment drifts. The third and largest growth phase occurred between 7 and 3 Ma, and may have been preceded by the initiation of accumulation on Eirik Drift, 8-7 Ma. A computer program combining backstripping with plate tectonics was developed to reconstruct the paleobathymetry of the region between the Charlie Gibbs and Jan Mayen Fracture Zones from the East. Greenland margin to the European shelf for the past 50 m.y. These reconstructions were first to combine a backs tripping model including decompaction of sediment with a gridded plate tectonic model. Quantitative methods to predict the formation of evaporites, bauxites and coal, using the results of GCM simulations are being developed by Wold, Pollard, Schulz, and Hay at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (Boulder, Colorado). Wold plans to compile a database of presently exposed c1imate-senesitive sediments and use observed climate data and GCM simulation results to develop validation techniques for paleoc1imate models. We will then test these techniques to determine whether it is possible to accurately predict the sites of deposition of climatically controlled sedimentary deposits in the Cretaceous.
