Language Focus
Talking about the date in Portuguese
Year: When we say the year in Portuguese we give it as a complete number: For example:
1984 is Mil novecentos e oitenta e quatro. (“One thousand nine hundred and nine”, instead of “Nineteen eighty
four”).
Day: We use the cardinal number (instead of the ordinal number) to say the day of the year and we normally use
the word “dia” (day) before the number. For example:
Eu vou para o Brasil no dia quatro de novembro.
(Literal Translation: I’m going to Brazil on the day four of November – as opposed to “fourth”).
-
The exception for this is the first day of the month, when we do use the ordinal number “primeiro”.
Eu volto do Brasil no dia primeiro de dezembro.
(Literal Translation: I’m coming back from Brazil on the day first of December)
Hoje é dia dois de novembro.
(Literal Translation: Today is day two of November)
