Conversation between Marina Coelho, Beni Bischof and Vinzenz Meyner on 11 May 2014, on the occasion of Beni Bischof ’s exhibition «Silly to the max», on view at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, from 10 May to 7 June 2014. Marina Coelho: Beni you would like to tell a little bit how you became an artist? Beni Bischof: I started as an artist. I did not go to the art school. I learned graphic design in St Gallen, in a classical way with less computer, classic stuff done by hand, collage, painting, drawing. I was always enjoying doing more free, like collages, drawing and specially painting, and installations. I was an artist, I was born as an artist! I was always doing art and then I had a chance to do some exhibitions. The first solo show I had was in 2006 in Zurich, in a empty house, near the Bahnhofstrasse. I knew the architect who was renovating the place which had 3 or 4 floors that I could use only for me. It was on a weekend, and I took all the stuff from St Gallen. It was a special experience. But also one of the first opportunities was to have a grant from the Kanton of St Gallen for the Laser magazine, that I had applied for. Then also in the next year that I had the opportunity to do a residency in Rome. It was flat with a big room for work only for me, which is also supported by the Kanton of St Gallen. Ant there I could also meet other artists at the Swiss Institute, where I could have lunch for free and make connections. BB: I have already done maybe 45 issues now. Theoretically, I want to do from 5 to 7 issues per year... but last year I didn’t do anyone. Now I am doing a new home page and I want to do more magazines again. The content of Laser magazine is my own work, and the reason is to be more free and more flexible. It is sort of a platform for showing the work, because I was always working a lot and my studio was full of things, and I wanted to show the works to other people. And I like magazines and books, so I started to do Laser magazine. The Laser magazine you kept doing it until now. Would you like to tell me a little about it? Vinzenz Meyner: I think Laser magazines is an important thing for Beni’s work, because it is a possibility to spread his work around the world. Beni started to do painting and all these stuff before Laser, but a lot of people know Laser before knowing his work. BB: It was really good for networking. Laser magazine was a possibility to get in touch with Benjamin Sommerhalder. He made two fanzines with me, and then other people from other continents also came in touch. That is also more additional. The very important exhibitions were also at the Swiss Art Awards, where I came in contact with galleries in Italy and Berlin. MC: And what about the content of your work, this idea that you have of making funny of things? One can see the materials you use, they are everyday kind of things, and images. Where this is coming from? BB: I don’t know. They are just simple things of everyday life, primitive things like sausages, stupid things. I am interested in humor maybe because in other days I was very interesting in doing cartoons or comics. I would like to be a clown! Or maybe to do an staged exhibition. People see always the funny things, that is one surface, the first impression. They think it is funny, but this is not the end. Humor is also a kind of rebellion! There are maybe also others things behind that funny side. Or I do also very serious stuff. I love really to do paintings and they are less funny then, for example, the fingers things or sausages. But it is easier to have a connection through the funny stuff then the more more calm stuff. VM: I think for the visitor or for the public it is nice to come into the work, they understand, they laugh, and then come the content behind the funny stuff about the sausages, or about the fingers. Afterwards, you find out that he is talking about something, serious art things, or something about the world, or what happens when things are combined and put in front of each other. It is a combination of contrasts, and it is really deep. MC: It can be also very political? BB: Yes, there is a layer which is political. I am interested in politics and everything that lays around me in my everyday life: magazines with political texts or pop people, high end objects. I am interested in contrasts. If you are on my webpage for example, you see a lot of stuff, but the pictures that are louder you see more, like the finger fashion pictures, the sausages, they are very strong pictures. It is stupid to be an artist and it is funny to be an artist, sitting alone in the studio, on your knees, playing being an artist, drawing and painting. The first reason why I am doing art is to express myself, my anger and questions. MC: You two worked very well together for the show here. Vinzenz knows your work very well as you have been developing a publication about it for a long time ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 6 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Montagem de/Making of «Silly to the max» barulhentas você vê mais, como os dedos nas fotos de moda fotos, as salsichas, elas são fotos muito fortes. Would you like to talk a little about this project and how it started? BB: We know each other since 3 years, 4 years. VM: We invited Beni for a solo show at our space Millieu in Bern. We used to do for every show a publication, and when we were doing the one for Beni, I suggested to him to do a big book together. We started an exchange of ideas, images, concept, etc. In the beginning, we just talked to each other and watched to all these images, and then we created a concept of a book with all his works, not only series, but all: collages, paintings, fingers and sausages images, drawings. BB: All the pictures on the hard disk! The idea was to tke all the 5.000 pictures, and make order in this mess. MC: How do you organize these images the book? VM: The problem is that we have all different material, different medias and different qualities. We ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 7 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Montagem de/Making of «Silly to the max» ideias, imagens, conceitos, etc. BB: Todas as imagens do disco rígido! A idéia era organizar todas as 5.000 fotos. MC: Como vocês organizaram essas imagens no livro? Para suas exposições e para as suas obras, Beni sempre cria títulos engraçados. had to think about how we manage all this stuff. Manuella, who was working with me, and I though we should do chapters for the book, in which we would order things, not dividing in by paintings, collages, drawings, but we wanted to mix them up. We wanted to give them an arrangement or a context. For his exhibitions and for his works, Beni always have funny titles. BB: Yes, when I am looking for a new title for a show I make a big list of 40 or 50 combinations of words, or fragments of texts, and then I choose at the end one title. I have many different lists on my computer. VM: I though it is very important to show all these words and the pictures, because the words are connected to the works. They must be together. So we decided to have a system to order all the words into categories and then ordering all the pictures in those same categories. Afterwards, we had 8 categories, and all the words and images for each one oaf them. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 8 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Detalhes da exposição /Details of the exhibition «Silly to the max» BB: Sim, quando eu estou à procura de um novo título para uma exposição eu faço uma grande lista com 40 ou 50 combinações de palavras ou fragmentos de textos, e então, no final eu escolho um título. Tenho muitas listas diferentes no meu computador. Beni: It was difficult to find the system to order it. Beni: But it was too boring. We wanted to mix everything. BB: So you see also the contrast which is very interesting. And you see really the difference of the groups if you go through the pages. VM: That was a difficult thing, how we name these categories, what kind of system we choose? If the topic was war, then every picture and every sentence would be about war, in the chapter War? VM: Beni came up then with a diagram with for the 8 categories: 1 is loud, 2 is quiet, 3 is funny, 4 is serious. Then, you combining 1 and 3 you have 5 that is loud funny, and so on. So we had loud quiet, funny serious, funny loud, serious loud, quiet funny and quiet serious. VM: But it was Beni who ordered all the images and the sentences, and decide to which category they ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 9 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Vista da exposição /Exhibition view «Silly to the max» Beni: Mas era muito chato. Assim, Vinzenz belonged. He could decide for something that for us would be funny, to be serious instead. MC: How did you decide to publish with Patrick Frey? BB: It is one of the bests publishing houses in Switzerland for artists’ books, they have very nice books. So, we tried to apply, Vinzenz has made a concept. VM: Normally they want to be part and decide about the content. They want to know what you do and why you do it. As we had done the concept for funding applications, we showed it to them and had some meetings. In the begging we thought we had to get the money for publishing ourselves. We didn’t have these connections with Patrick Frey, it was only afterwards. But Patrick Frey raised all the money, that was not our job. Most of it is public money. VM: It was interesting that once Beni told me that he wanted that the visitor of his next exhibition look at every work. And it is a little bit the same with the book. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 10 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Detalhes da exposição /Details of the exhibition «Silly to the max» criou um conceito e enviamos para avaliação. A maior parte é dinheiro público. BB: I like the mess of thousands of pictures, of different subjects. It is like a fist on your face. You cannot read every picture of every content subject. I like this impossibility. MC: Yes it is true. Some of your shows looks like a studio, full of stuff, and you can not understand very much if it is a studio or an installation. When you are going to launch the book? VM: In the begging of June. One release will be in Bern, at our space, one release will be at the Kunst Halle St Gallen, and the third will be at Sommer & Koln’s booth during Liste Art Fair. MC: You two really worked a long time for this book. VM: 3 years. It is sounds crazy. It has 640 pages, 2,5 kilos, and 2000 images. BB: It is a weapon! It is a really good book. I haven’t seen a book like this before. There are no artist’s story ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 11 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Vista da exposição /Exhibition view «Silly to the max» MC: Sim, é verdade . MC: Como foi para você, Beni, desenvolver a texts before, just the words and a lot of pictures. There is only a little text introducing the categories. MC: How was it for you Beni to develop the KUNSTHALLE Sao Paulo show from there not knowing the space? Beni: That is always difficult. It has always been the same. I have always huge crises at home, imagining how the show could be at the end. Then, when I come into the space it is totally different. I have a connection, I feel the light, everything is logical, and mostly there is no problem. At home, if everything is theoretical is very difficult. I cannot draw a sketch of the show, it is always lists, and lists, and lists. I had a show in Dusseldorf, in Germany, and I came one day before the vernissage. The gallerist didn’t know me, and he feared that I would not come with enough works. But I had a cardboard role and a package in my bag with 20 works, and it was really a good show at the end. I have to decide before the show, because of the luggage. It is always a rational decision how much I can bring with me, what I want to ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 12 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// exposição para a KUNSTHALLE São Paulo de lá sem conhecer o espaço? Isso me ajuda a decidir. Vernissage de/of «Silly to the max» na/at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo show. If it is in Switzerland, then I can take the car and fill it with everything, and in the end there is only 20% on the wall. Some work series I can do everywhere, like the fake laminated parquet things, the cigarettes things, but I can not take a big painting with me. This year I wanted to show more paintings and drawings, that is my aim. I also like to discuss with the curator, exchange emails about the show to make a selection of ideas. It helps me to decide. MC: For me to work with you was very easy. Some artists come and stay 15 days, in your case you stayed very short period, but you had Vinzenz to help. BB: I always take if it is possible some friends with me, or one friend who helps me. We can discuss together about the show, we have fun, laugh about the stupid sculptures, and just talk something. MC: É muito mais engraçado. Obrigado Beni! MC: It is much funnier. Thank you Beni! Beni: Muito obrigado pela experiência, Marina ! Beni: Thank you very much for the experience, Marina! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 13 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Vernissage de/of «Silly to the max» e/and dia no parque/park day. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 4/14 | 14 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Silly to the max KUNSTHALLE São Paulo convida o artista suíço Beni Bischof para apresentar Silly to the max, sua primeira exposição individual no Brasil, que dá continuidade ao projeto LX92. Bischof’s work is characterized by questioning the absurdity of the routine and monotony of everyday life, and the lack of direction and ridiculous nature of human pleasures. With a cynical humor and a clear preference for chaos, the artist, through intuitive gestures, manipulates and modifies the context of existing things, creating a playful and absurd ‘cosmos’. Music, literature, TV shows, gossip magazines, trinkets of consumer society, and primarily, the internet and its daily insane amount of news, are all inspiration and serve as raw material for his works, which are funny, but at the same time an bit disturbing. Using painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and photo manipulation, his work addresses not only pop and underground current themes, but also political matters and social critiques, presented through his interest in anti-aesthetics, deconstruction, absurdity, and destroyed beauty. For the project at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, the artist, whose audacious exhibitions seem chaotic at a first glance, will create new works in loco, during the period in which he will be in the city, allowing that the traces of the work process remain visible to the observer.
