Heritage is therefore, from this perspective, the first facet in the commitment towards the dignity of the human being, cultural diversity and lasting development. We are in the presence of a cultural capital that is the result of the talent and work of women and men, becoming a factor of development and an incentive to creativity. When we talk about dialogue and mutual respect among cultures and the different expressions of creativity and tradition, we are considering the value that society attributes to its cultural and historical heritage or its memory as a fundamental factor to avoid and prevent the “shock of civilisations”, but, more than that, to create solid foundations for peace, reciprocal support and understanding. The overall average of all the parameters is 86.7%, which is an improvement in comparison to the results in 2011 (84.9%). 3. 4 | junho 3. The results obtained show that philos’s efforts in making sure it provides high quality services and our constant drive to bring about ongoing improvement are bearing fruits. Our team of external translators are deserving of particular praise. We were happy to note that there was a steady improvement in the assessment marks attributed in projects throughout 2011, in general, and in the bigger and more complex project especially. Finally, I do not want to fail to mention the extremely demanding climate we are currently living through: the lowering of prices versus the added complexity of the projects. The specialisation of the translation professionals is now not only a preference; it is an indispensable requirement. And only through continuous improvement in our quality standards can we safeguard the best working conditions and obtain the satisfaction of a job well done. n 2012 June | magazinephilos a * “... da Ocidental praia lusitana” a “... from the Western lusitanian shore” S. Centenas de milhares de pessoas invadem a cidade em romarias pedestres espalhando alegria e amizade por todos quantos se cruzam pelo caminho. 6 | junho As with written translation, there is a need to publish reports, reflections and opinions about INTERPRETATION (which I insist on calling ORAL TRANSLATION). I would go as far as to say that these reflections, coming from the person who did the oral translation or who witnessed it, are of essential importance. In effect, in oral translation the translated work is ephemeral most of the time. A record of it, if it exists at all, disappears shortly after it has been done. The act in itself, as a normal and everyday event, goes unnoticed. Therefore the aforementioned reflections are, as well as being important, extremely rare. Evidently, to study oral translations these reflections are indispensable. Today I will occupy myself with a work about the Second World War. Few readers realise that interpreters were used on the battlefield. However, this war is without a doubt part of the data charting the history of oral translation in the 20th century. The translation into French of the work of a Russian interpreter – Elena Rjevskaïa – during the Second World War can still be considered recent (2011). Carnets de l’Interprète de Guerre is the title of the book, published by Christian Bourgois. Elena Rjevskaïa presents a personal vision of the war, the battle for Moscow, Hitler’s bunker in his final days, and even the ‘attempt by Stalin to rewrite history’. It is other aspects, however, that are of interest to us here. Firstly, there are fascinating descriptions and notes showing us how the Russian interpreters were recruited in that epoch and during the war. Elena Rjevskaïa was sent to the battlefront, but as a nurse – she had studied at night school at the same time as working in a factory. However, when Elena finished her course, there was a high demand for military interpreters. The army officers no longer spoke ‘the language of the enemy’; and this was something new, when compared to what happened in the First World War. Nothing that the patriotic ambition of the Russian youths could not solve. Elena had been learning German since she was child. And the urgency with which Moscow University’s Faculty of Western Languages organised military interpretation courses upon the request of the Russian Commander in Chief meant that our protagonist was sent to the battlefront without taking the course (open only to males). Elena Rjevskaïa’s reports on her work as an interpreter date back to October 1941. The records of her interpreting work on the battlefront are the focus of my interest. It was not the author’s intention to describe all the interpreting acts in which she participated. The same can be said in relation to the types of documents she translated. To start with, it is pointed out that the ‘interpreter’ also translated written/ printed documents. Indeed, the translation of a pamphlet destined for German soldiers was the first ‘job’ assigned to Elena Rjevskaïa. Interrogating prisoners was, without doubt, the most common interpreting job Elena Rjevskaïa had to carry out. What she asked them was, of course, the responsibility of the Russian officers. But the answers came from the interrogated soldiers. Some of whom professed the Nazi ideology. This did not go unnoticed to the interpreter. The answers from this group especially, were of little use for the Russian officers. Singular – is the word the author uses to describe the place of the interpreter in the ‘maelstrom of war’. But no less singular would have been the interpreter’s report who does not forget she is a being. This BEING sees men in the individuals she comes into contact with. The humanity of the interpreter is an example. For all of us. Today, Elena Rjevskaïa can say that “personal contact with History is infinite and its numerous facets are more clearly distinguished as the years go by…” We thank her.n 2012 June | magazinephilos a Gosta de flores? a Are you a flower fan? Devaneios, digo bem. That’s right dear readers, if you remember, it is now a year ago since I was abandoned by my beloved Laika, who vanished without trace. And what about her seven children, you ask me? Well, that’s the advantage of not being human... I did not have to see my modest savings disappear into the hands of a grasping nanny or a newfangled nursery. My owners took care of everything. And in the blink of an eye! One day they were still little bundles smelling of milk, and suddenly they were jumping in my direction and trying to lick me all over, would you believe? They required so much attention that, to be honest, I started getting jealous! So much so that one day, listing to the irritating yapping of those seven miniature dogs, I let out a deepest howl that my bygone ancestors, the wolves, would have been proud of. And do you know what happened? As soon as my long howl began, complete silence fell upon the pack of puppies. It even astonished me; I didn’t realise I had remnants of such ancient genealogy inside me… Thousands of years of adaptation to a dog’s life, traces of “pedigree” and – can you believe it – I am still able to howl like a wolf! Perhaps humans should reflect a little on the matter, not only as regards dogs, but especially in relation to themselves. Let’s move on, because I’m coming to the end of the page. One day I began to see my children leave. They were all received with open arms by the best owners in the world and they are all very happy today. They all went… apart from one: one that was kept to keep me company and who I have seen grow up next to me. He’s called Budi and he’s here, looking at me as if he is reading my thoughts… and daydreams. Daydreams, for sure. Because, friends, I can’t hide from you that deep down inside me I feel, at times, that hurt that cannot be felt, that pain that aches without wounding. La donna è mobile, qual piuma al vento – that was how one illustrious human has put it into words in the operatic arts. Like a feather in the wind, my Laika went away. Do I miss my beloved? But I was particularly struck by one radio bulletin discussing the reaction by the public to Portugal’s performances in Ukraine and Poland. A media analyst explained how significantly more editions of the daily sports newspapers are sold after a poor performance or a defeat by the Selecção than after a good display or a victory! “It seems people love to talk about failure and what went wrong rather than success and what went right,” he said. This unfortunate trait can be extrapolated to each an every one of us, I believe. It is much easier to pick faults in others than to point out their praiseworthy charateristics. For example, as most readers of this column are philos employees, I would hazard a guess that out of every 100 translations you have done, well over 90 are of excellent quality. But almost none of those 90 elicited any response. Yet any occasional lapse is very likely to be brought to your attention immediately. Of course, it is only right that mistakes should be pointed out so we can learn from them and try to constantly improve. But a word of praise now and again can be just as beneficial for the personal and professional development of any individual. So I end this column with a suggestion. Next time you come across a competent piece of work, a kind gesture or an intelligent observation, let the author know about it! I was driving in my car, in the company of the radio airwaves alone. As happy coincidence would have it, I was driving up Avenida da Boavista on a day with a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. The voice of one of the city’s best journalists, Hélder Pacheco, uttered the following words: “it is the only authentic monument in the city of Porto.” What, I asked myself. Breaking the rules of good and safe driving, I paid more attention to what was coming out of the speakers than what was happening on the road. The Peninsula War Memorial Monument was the answer. A couple of kilometres down the road and I saw it, in the middle of the Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque, slender, but imposing, dominating the tarmac surface that flows into the sea, in remembrance to how the Portuguese and the English withstood the attacks of Napoleon’s troops. I pondered for a while, at a red light. The statement is understandable if one adopts a certain viewpoint as regards the concept of a monument – it is not just a question of being magnificent or old; it has to be, above all, evocative, erected specifically to celebrate a moment, a momentous fact of the history of the people who create it. Porto Cathedral, for example, is certainly beautiful, and is part of the history of the city, but it is first and foremost a place of religious worship, a sacrifice from men to the Gods, therefore. A monument, the monument, is a gift from mankind to itself. Two nations who came together on the battlefields and cities, one to defend what was theirs, the other to defend their ancient ally. If the French troops had won, the course of history would have undoubtedly been different, and we would all be different. But the biggest monument of them all, an alliance among men which is reborn when necessary, would remain… n 12 | junho 2012 June | magazinephilos a Tradumática a Tradumatics Helsínquia :: Helsinki 7º Conferência Internacional da EUATC The 7th EUATC International Conference a Vitor Silva Helsínquia acolheu a 7ª conferência internacional da EUATC. Helsinki was the venue for the 7th EUATC international conference. The EUATC (European Union of Associations of Translation Companies) brought together around 20 national associations of translation companies. Among other no less important matters, the members shared the common goals of promoting high quality standards and good business practices, as well as giving a contribution towards the supply of high quality services. The meeting was held on 26 and 27 April, under the theme of: Innovating for Success. “O mercado no presente e no futuro” (The market now and in the future) e “Inovação para o sucesso num mundo sem fronteiras” (Innovate for success in a world without borders) deram o mote para cada um dos dias da conferência. Two days of intense exchange of experience in a highly professional and collaborative environment ensued. “The market now and in the future” and “Innovate for success in a world without borders” were the specific topics of each day of the conference. The themes discussed and technologies we came into contact with left us certain that philos is on the right road in this difficult translation/localisation market. A common point that arose in the various debates throughout the conference was as follows: not only has the market changed, but it continues to change and it is impossible to predict where it will go next. The worldwide economic paradigm has changed our habits and economic relations, forcing us to make in-depth readjustments in the most wide-ranging of business areas; translation, as well as being one of the first industries to feel the full weight of this impact, has to continue to make constant and major readjustments. The main conclusion drawn from this conference brought to the fore a reality that philos has already acted upon. To survive, translation professionals, whether individuals or companies, must show the ability to be more competitive. We are reaching the halfway point of the year. What the other half has in store for us is impossible to say in today’s extremely complex worldwide climate. What we do know, without a doubt, is that philos will continue to monitor the changes without discarding the ethical principles that have always guided our business, responding to the market and the high quality standards that are our trademark and which we are happy to see recognised abroad. n 2012 June | 13 ARTESARTS a Fernando Nogueira is”; Perico Sambeat - “Perico”; Guillermo McGill - “Cielo” e “Oración”; Tetvocal - “Desafinados”; Djurumani - “Reencontro” e Andy Hamilton “Jamaica by night”, entre muitos outros. At the age of 18, Sassetti started playing jazz live with Carlos Martins and the Moreiras Jazztet. His first solo albums, Salsetti (1994) and Mundos (1996), found him closer to Afro-Latin sounds. With Nocturno (2002), he recorded as a trio with Carlos Barretto and Alexandre Frazão, and the musician ventured through a more intimate path. Sassetti has also regularlarly been involved in film soundtracks. He wrote several scores, among which we can remember for instance his collaboration in the film by Anthony Minguella, “The Talented Mr. Ripley”, as well as the original soundtrack to “Alice”, from film director Marco Martins. As a performer, he has performed as a piano soloist, in a trio with Carlos Barretto and Alexandre Frazão and in a duet with pianist Mário Laginha, with whom Sassetti recorded the albums “Mário Laginha/Bernardo Sassetti” and “Grândolas” (a tribute to Zeca Afonso as well as to the 30th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974). Among several recordings (as a solo performer, accompanist and composer) we can highlight the following: Conrad Herwing e Trio de Bernardo Sassetti - “Ao vivo no Guimarães jazz”; Orquestra Cubana Sierra Maestra - “Dundumbanza” and “Tibiri tabara”; Carlos Barreto - “Impressões” and “Olhar”; Carlos Martins with Cindy Blackman “Passagem”; Luis Represas - “Cumplicidades”; Guy Barker - “Into the blue”, “Timeswing” and “What love is”; Perico Sambeat - “Perico”; Guillermo McGill - “Cielo” and “Oración”; Tetvocal - “Desafinados”; Djurumani - “Reencontro” and Andy Hamilton - “Jamaica by night”, among many others. Delirious and multifarious texts like my column in the previous edition owe less to present-day London than the image of its past, whether accurate or fictitious, gleaned from history textbooks, or stories of how Jack the Ripper lurked around every corner, or even television series such as Yes, Minister. Those of you who paid careful attention to the accompanying photographs would have noticed, however, the dichotomy between the words and the pictures. And as a picture is worth a thousand words… Before setting off, we were told about the abysmal difference between the way of life in our small nation planted besides the sea and this city; >> this other world that accommodates practically the same population 16 | junho 2012 June | magazinephilos a Impressões de Viagem as the whole of Portugal. London is, above all, movement. An immense human conglomerate on the move almost without stop at a frenetic pace, be it on the underground, by bus, car, bicycle or on foot, makes the city breathe all day long, with constant whispers well into the night. I confess that we had not prepared ourselves, despite the recommendations, to keep up with this fast pace of everyday life, meaning that the sensation at the end of the first day was that we had been hit by a train. Indeed, London is definitively not a city embellished to please the hoards of tourists in the same manner as other cities, such as the way Rome presents itself to the world. Of course, certain zones of the city, especially Westminster, are full of visitors from near and afar, with a camera at the ready, but while there are green and relaxing parks, thousands of restaurants, streets and neighbourhoods replete with traditional shops, or nightlife, this is chiefly geared towards the needs of the Londoners, and it is their patronage that arouses the curiosity of the visitors. London has been built not to serve the world, but magazinephilos a rather itself. Which does not mean it excludes those who come to discover it. As occasional travellers, we always receive a smile and a kind word. We also see how the community tries to embrace an inclusive attitude towards human relations with those who, not so long ago, it ruled over. As such, albeit on a markedly Anglo Saxon canvas, London is a multicultural and pacifically harmonious painting, which incorporates extremely different ways of looking at the world. So where did these preconceptions that are part of our collective imaginary come from? That mental representation of London, and hence, in turn, of the whole of England, which remains today in the mind’s eye of the Europeans who live closer to the Mediterranean than the North Sea? The omnipresence of the rain, pollution, claustrophobia, danger, seriousness, haughtiness… are these all merely erroneous viewpoints? Did you know that, on average, the annual | junho 2012 June | a Travel Musings rainfall in London is only half of that of the city of Porto? So the idea of a rainy city is created not because of the quantity of rain, but the fact that it rains on more days in London than in Porto. I would be more than happy to swap the weather on the day I am finishing this text, one week before summer, cold, windy and grey, for the days I spent on the other side of the English Channel, where the sun was shining brightly. Likewise, the notion of a certain unfriendliness of the Londoners is fostered by our overly obsequious idea of kindness, which prolongs conversations beyond what is really necessary with needless adornment. Because, while London is all movement, its time is precious. It is no surprise, therefore, that the foremost symbol of southern Europe civilisation, Rome’s coliseum, is in truth a ruin; whereas the epicentre of London is the always correct Big Ben… n 17 a magazinephilos Esperamos que tenha gostado.
