We have reflected a little in past columns about the economic climate we experienced last year, and which has worsened this year, with less than six months of it remaining. Philos has always been, and will always be, an organisation where ethics, respect and social responsibility are at the forefront of our concerns. In this edition of our Magazine we highlighted, in the Library section, the mission to Guinea-Bissau carried out by EDUCAFRICA, in March 2013. Despite the stormy winds that are blowing in from the mountains of the famous markets – whose exact location seems to remain unknown – philos has not abdicated its responsibilities. In partnership with the NGOD of Maia, we contributed to the success of a humanitarian mission in one of the world’s poorest countries, which is linked to us through historical ties and a language that is spoken by over 250 million people. No matter how difficult the times, no matter how arid the road, there is always room for acts that, however small they may be, can contribute to improving the life of the most needy. philos - comunicação global, lda The clouds are hovering at the summit of the mountains and it is difficult to see beyond them, but when we look inside ourselves we can make out the horizon and there we find the comfort of seeing somebody who cares, somebody who is looking out for those who have so little and need so much. www.philos.pt If those who held the reins of power followed suit, there would be no hunger in the world. Our team of external translators are deserving of particular praise. We were happy to note that there was a steady improvement in the assessment marks attributed in projects throughout 2012, in general, and in the bigger and more complex project especially. 4 | junho Finally, I do not want to fail to mention the extremely demanding climate we are currently living through: the lowering of prices versus the added complexity of the projects. Fica o convite! After our visit to the deep south in the last edition, this time we travel up north and end up at Portugal’s oldest town: Ponte de Lima. It became a town in 1125 and up until today its streets continue to be trodden by many thousands of visitors. The Roman road and the original Old Bridge date back to Emperor Augustus’s time, when the Iberian Peninsula was invaded by the Romans. In bygone times it was a strategic site given its good connection to Galicia, and still today it is travelled through by thousands of pilgrims on their way to Santiago. | junho 2013 June | In the heart of the Minho, Ponte de Lima is caressed by an almost Mediterranean microclimate that invites one to stop for a moment’s contemplation and for some culinary delights. Many visitors go there to feel the heartbeat of a living nature that surrounds the town and to experience the traditions and its day-to-day life. The Vaca das Cordas (Strung-up Cow) is a centuries-old tradition that invades the centre of the town and which attracts thousands of visitors every year, involving the population and visitors in a tender embrace of socialising and joy. While the surrounding nature, its geographical position and traditions attract visitors, there is another strong drawing point to summon visitors: the famous sarrabulho (a pork speciality). This dish is a delicious gift for the palate and in Ponte de Lima it is endowed with a taste that only the locals can afford it. We would need many pages to transmit the sensations conferred by this gastronomic pearl, but nothing can beat trying it for yourself. We invite you to do so! n 5 Em português In portuguese Carlos Castilho Pais [professor universitário :: university professor] As coisas, na nossa vida, repetem-se, ciclicamente. Vejamos. A Universidade forma tradutores. 6 | junho Things in our life repeat themselves cyclically. We have arrived at the end of another academic year. At the end of the academic year (2013), education was at the forefront of the news. Teachers, students and parents came together to alert public opinion about the serious problems facing the sector and to debate today’s schools. It is not my intention to summarise the whole debate that was meanwhile produced. But, sometimes, from the whole argument, the idea of the uselessness of school springs upon us: the uselessness of school, as a surreptitious basis to impose certain educational policies, the uselessness of school as an ideology that argues for a school to be immediately useful, in which such a school can only be a failure. And do not think I am referring to children’s schools alone. I also include universities in my reflection. Employment, employment and more employment is what is asked of the universities as a strategic vision of action. Perhaps it makes sense, in a column about translation, to bring to the debate about the uselessness of the school, the path followed in the teaching of translation. Although short when compared to other subjects, this path is very significant. Translation was first taught in the teaching establishments after the two tragic world wars of the 20th century, in the mid 1900s. The translation market needed translators. The market’s needs at the time encompassed so-called technical translation and so-called interpretation, as well as literary translation, which had been, up until then, the most visible side of translation and which counted for little in comparison to the emerging translation needs. Today, the question of the usefulness of school has, perhaps, in translation, among its strongest arguments. Translation in its broadest forms always existed without schools, without universities. Portugal’s Fernando Pessoa undertook technical translation without ever obtaining any qualification to do so, as is well-known. But this argument has been defeated over more than fifty years by the market logic. Let us see. Universities prepare translators. This may be in response to the market’s needs, and without doubt is, in most cases. But it is also true that the training that is imparted cannot escape from the educational philosophy that University uses in its instruction in general. Any training, including the training of translators, implies an ‘idea of university’ by the university that imparts the instruction. As far as one knows, the market has not opposed this thinking. We can introduce into the debate the clarification that comes to us from the very curricular structure of the translation courses. While, on the one hand, we find a set of subjects that we can label as ‘practical’, on the other hand, we also find a set that cannot be clearly linked to a translation skill that the future translator should be endowed with. The history of translation, the theory of translation, subjects on topics such as multiculturalism, bilingualism, and so on, are some examples of such subjects. Removing this set of subjects from the curricular structure of the courses may be in line with an ideological vision of the uselessness of school, but one cannot look upon such an action as beneficial for the future translation professional. I believe that the professional life of the translator is and will be so demanding and unpredictable, and for this very reason exciting and fulfilling, that it cannot be restricted to practical learning, essentially focused on the ‘merely useful’. That is the case in the professional life of the translator, as it is in life in general. What at first sight appear useless, often reveals itself to be highly useful. Very often it is praiseworthy to use the narrowest path to reach the destination.n 2013 June | magazinephilos a Gosta de flores? a Are you a flower fan? It is one of the most popular plants found in our gardens. We can go so far as to say that a garden is not complete if it does not contain at least one Azalea, and preferably it should have a collection of Azaleas. A plant from the Ericaceae family, originating in Southwest Asia, it is in truth a rhododendron that stands out from the others because of how big it grows and its flowers. Indeed, there is no botanical difference between Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Both belong to the Rhododendron SP species of the Ericaceae family. Rhododendrons include species with a broader leaf which can grow into a medium-sized to large bush, while Azaleas have smaller leaves, come from Asia and are recognisable chiefly because of their abundant and beautiful flowers. As you will certainly remember, I told you around two years ago how surprised I was to have my peaceful everyday life interrupted by the appearance of seven very strange fluffy balls, which, thanks to the vicissitudes of life, ended up in my care. Well, today, upon checking the post, I received this from my youngest: Daddy, At last I can write to you. I’m doing so now because it is on these intensely hot days that I most miss the farm where I was born. And that is not a gripe aimed at my owners for cooping me up – from what I’ve seen, my little terrace is far and away superior to lots of cramped spaces that other dogs have to satisfy themselves with – but the freedom to run and run and run… The problem is that people, who knows why, have to pay more for each square metre of land the closer it is to the sea and so they end up all scrunched up on top of one another. There are lots of other things that I don’t understand yet. For example, my owners say they are my adopted parents, even though we are different species, and everybody laughs. Then there are married couples who want to adopt children, and because they are of the same sex, everybody looks at them askance… Recently, when they let me sit on the sofa (my favourite thing of all), I’ve enjoyed watching the circus performances showing on TV. The only thing I don’t understand is why they call it the news. After all, an endless line of jugglers with spreadsheets; verbal contortionists; ministerial balancing acts, ventriloquist’s dummies who spout in Portuguese the thinking from other places; all under the orders of a histrionic fanfare leader who is almost always rendered speechless, must surely be the greatest show on earth? I don’t want to take up any more of your time, and stamps are expensive, so I’ ll say goodbye, hoping that you continue to run, along with my brother, through those joyful fields. For yourselves, for me, and for all the dogs who can’t do so. I look forward to hearing your news! An affectionate lick from Anita.n magazinephilos a | junho 2013 June | 9 An Englishman in Lisbon Um inglês em Lisboa Thomas Kundert The never-ending quest A busca infinita I drew inspiration for this column from the brilliant quote cited at the start of the From here Portugal got its name article of this edition: “Even if things were exactly as we wished they were, people would still complain that they aren’t like they used to be.” (Pierre Dac) The article goes on to explain how this concept is particularly apt in relation to how Porto’s inhabitants view the changing face of the city’s annual Saint John’s festival. But this attitude is not particular to Porto, or even Portugal as a whole. It is simply a manifestation of what I am increasingly convinced is a deep-rooted human trait shared by the overwhelming majority of us. We are rarely, if ever, satisfied with our set of circumstances at any given time. That is why we are now hearing groans about the “unbearably hot weather”, when just a few weeks ago people were complaining about “a depressingly cool summer”. Or as the great Portuguese singer António Variações put it: “Só estou bem onde não estou” – I only feel good where I am not. Why this endless quest to “better” our situation? Perhaps it is because, like never before in the history of mankind, thanks to Facebook and other social media, not to mention antiquated forms of mass communication such as TV, newspapers and magazines, we can peer into all aspects of other people’s lives (with emphasis only on the good parts, of course), we can easily trace the path by which they got to their position, and hence we feel it is within our own grasp. With increased opportunities come increased expectations. This may be no bad thing. A constant quest to improve our lot is surely one of the basic energy-inducing life forces. But, just occasionally, it would make a pleasant and refreshing change to hear somebody say: “I am completely content with what I have got and with whom, where and what I am!” I am yet to hear that phrase… Ainda estou para ouvir semelhante…n 10 | junho 2013 June | magazinephilos a BibliotecaLibrary Novidade a New a Margarida Fonseca Nesta nossa habitual secção, fugiremos um pouco ao formato comum, In this edition we are breaking away a little from our usual format in this mas perfeitamente enquadrado, ou não tivesse tido o livro Olhares Sobre a section, albeit perfectly within the column’s philosophy, especially as the Terra-Mãe um papel decisivo no que vamos divulgar. book Olhares Sobre a Terra-Mãe (Glances at the Motherland) played a Foi uma parte da receita proveniente da venda do livro Olhares Sobre a decisive role in what we report herein. “Even if things were exactly as we wished they were, people would still complain that they aren’t like they used to be.” (Pierre Dac) In bygone times, the summer solstice was celebrated throughout the whole of Europe, including Porto, for sure. An important milestone in the agricultural calendar, this time of the year served to celebrate the fertility of men and the land, and the joy brought by the heat, which is all connected… Afterwards, it became known that Saint John the Baptist was born on 24 June, and this date was established in the Catholic Church calendar, to replace the former gentile festivals and for the greater moral benefit of the Christian peoples. In Porto it is known that at least since the 14th century this was a major popular festival, and also the most important date of the year in political terms, as it was the date of the big Municipal Council meetings. Of course, the most ardent Christians did not like the pagan symbology and customs that remained, while on the other side of the fence were those who viewed the intromission of a saint as highly annoying. Later, much later, now in the 20th century, came the plastic hammers, attempting to take the place of the leeks. Less smell, more noise. “It’s not really that Saint John’s festival of old,” was and still is the attitude of those who come from a time before the plastification of the festival. In this century, we witnessed the arrival of busses blaring out live music and raves, one can say, with which the young have readily replaced the former folk dance melodies. “This spells the end!” it is declared, between two barbecued sardines. Now, we have the Boavista race circuit to compete with the anniversary of the “last prophet”, in the mission to create chaos with the city’s traffic… That would be my gripe, that things are not what they used to be. And, after me, others will come who continue to complain while the festival, indifferent, continues long into the night.n 12 | junho 2013 June | magazinephilos a Tradumática a Tradumatics Helsínquia :: Helsinki ToolWiz Care, otimize o seu trabalho! We often feel like our PC needs a holiday, needs something to refresh and revitalise it like a good SPA or time on the beach, in the hope that this can make it perform like it did when it was new. Well, with this goal in mind we present the ToolWiz Care to you. It won’t paint your PC another colour, but it will without doubt leave it more uncluttered and proficient! ToolWiz Care is a set of tools able to check and solve various problems in our PC, significantly improving its performance. Several tools are put at the service of the computer: health care in using a PC, disk repairer, cryptography, network, drivers, file management. Regarding this last tool we point out that some have the capacity to recover files deleted accidently, while others are able to delete files for good, guaranteeing that they will never be recovered. It is this contrast that makes this powerful set of tools stand out, an authentic all-in-one. Another big advantage is the easy way that all the actions are carried out and even the possibility to use the application without installing it, whereby you can give the System a check-up using just a USB Pen in any PC! When you start the program for the first time you can opt to allow the application to perform all the tasks. Simply run a System check-up and you shall be presented with the errors found and the possibility of correcting them with a simple click. It’s a good way to check on the status of your PC. If you would prefer to opt for a more detailed and manual method, you can navigate through all the functionalities of the application, with the function of each one clearly labelled. Another of the most sought-after functionalities is the possibility to uninstall applications in our PC, classifying them and guaranteeing that the Windows register is clean so as not to have any vestige of “trash” from these programs, which in the case of CAT tools can prevent a series of headaches. A performance function also makes it possible to defragment the disk and optimise the start-up of Windows, thus improving the performance of the PC. It is without doubt a “must have” application, containing functionalities that can improve your daily usage of a PC, especially for people who constantly install and remove new applications, with the big advantage of having everything in one free program.n www.toolwiz.com www.toolwiz.com magazinephilos a | junho Ricardo Fernandes 2013 June | 13 ARTESARTS a Fernando Nogueira Tiago Estrada: The Wall of Pleasure Tiago Estrada’s “The Wall of Pleasure” follows the artist’s previous research into language and its use, but is also a deeper reflection on one’s true freedom and expression. The main problem behind language, regardless of which one, lies behind the fact that a language is no more than a constructed system of communication, and its understanding derives from one’s apprehension of that pre-existent set of rules or archetype system. Nevertheless, with “Wall of Pleasure” Estrada’s research deviates from his previous body of work. Formerly concerned with trying to understand how to corrupt language in its written form – by retaining a visual formality, which was, in fact, void of linguistic value – Estrada now tries to find a truly apprehensible universal language, not guided by any set of grammatical or even mental rules. a Kaleidoscope de composições de Adolfo Luxúria Canibal e António Rafael, em colaboração com Estrada, fomentando ainda mais a noção de que esses sons guturais, respiração e percussões primordiais são eles próprios condicionados e limitados como uma linguagem arquitetada pré-estabelecida. The exhibition is given the name of an installation. In it, through the use of repetitive onomatopoeia written on the walls, Tiago Estrada isolates the notion of scream, particularly the one associated with sexual intercourse in Western culture. The installation also integrates sound through a piece composed by Adolfo Luxúria Canibal and António Rafael, in collaboration with Estrada, further enhancing the notion that those primordial guttural sounds, breathing and percussion are themselves as conditioned and limited as pre-established architected language.
