PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL’S MESSAGE
Esta minha mensagem tem o objetivo
principal, não só de saudar, em nome
do Conselho Geral, todos os membros
da NOVA e de lhes desejar as maiores
felicidades, como de os consciencializar
do que é e de como funciona o principal
órgão da instituição.
Porque muitos estudantes entraram
para a NOVA no corrente ano letivo,
convém informá-los de que o nosso
Conselho se compõe de 14 membros
internos, incluindo 3 estudantes, e
de 7 membros externos de entre os
quais são eleitos o Presidente e Vicepresidente. Todos os membros, exceto
os estudantes, eleitos por dois anos, são
eleitos para mandatos quadrienais.
Cabe ao Conselho, cuja dimensão
deliberadamente pequena tem
contribuído para garantir a sua
eficiência, apreciar os actos dos
vários órgãos de governação. No ano
passado, primeiro do seu 2.º mandato,
a Presidência iniciou, para o efeito, um
diálogo com cada um dos membros da
equipa reitoral.

No presente ano letivo, esse diálogo
estendeu-se aos presidentes dos
Conselhos de todas as Unidades
Orgânicas tendo, nesta altura do ano
letivo, todos eles sido consultados. Há
a intenção de promover uma sessão
extraordinária destinada a permitir que
o Plenário do Conselho Geral ouça a
equipa reitoral na sua globalidade.
Trata-se de oportunidades importantes
que preparam o Conselho para
intervir com criatividade e eficácia nos
importantes passos que, sob a égide
do Magnífico Reitor, a Universidade no
seu conjunto, e as Unidades Orgânicas
na sua diversidade, pretendem dar
para que a NOVA continue a destacarse entre as melhores, não só no plano
europeu, mas também no mundial.
É importante mencionar que,
no presente ano letivo, a nossa
Universidade, não só foi uma das
mais procuradas a nível nacional
pelos caloiros, muitos dos quais a
distinguiram dando-lhe, ao candidatarse, o primeiro lugar nas suas
preferências na maioria dos cursos
que oferece, como teve a satisfação de
constatar que a maioria dos alunos que
formou beneficiou de ótimas condições
de empregabilidade.
No que se refere à investigação, a
avaliação promovida pela Fundação
para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, organismo
nacional a que se submeteram
as unidades de investigação e
desenvolvimento da Instituição,
revelaram que, no plano nacional, 3
dessas mereceram a classificação de
“Excecionais”, 11 de “Excelentes” e 16 de
“Muito Boas”, resultados que colocam
a NOVA numa invejável posição a nível
nacional. No plano internacional, o
ranking compilado pela Times Higher
Education considerou-a uma das 100
melhores universidades do Mundo
com menos de 50 anos, e o QS World
University Rankings 2014 colocou-a
na posição 312 num universo de 863
instituições nomeadas, o que significa
ter subido 41 lugares, desde o ano
anterior.
The main objective of my message
is not only to greet, on behalf of the
General Council, all the members
of NOVA, to whom I wish all kind of
success, but also to raise awareness of
what is the main body of the institution
and how it works.
Given the fact that many students
entered NOVA in the present academic
year, it is convenient to inform them
that our Council is composed of 14
internal members, including 3 students,
and 7 external members, among which
the President and Vice-President are
elected. All members, except the
students who are elected for a two-year
mandate, are elected every four years.
The General Council, whose deliberately
small dimension contributes to its
effectiveness, is responsible for
monitoring the activity of the several
University governance bodies. Last
year, the first of its second mandate,
the Presidency of the Council started,
to that end, a systematic dialogue with
each of the Rectoral Team members.
In the present academic year, this
dialogue was extended also to the
presidents of the Councils of all
academic units, all of whom have
already been contacted so far. There
is also the intention of promoting an
extraordinary session that allows the
General Council plenary to listen to the
Rectoral Team as a whole.
These will be important opportunities
that will prepare the Council to
intervene with creativity and efficiency
in the important steps that, under the
aegis of the Rector Magnificus, the
University as a whole, and the academic
units in its diversity, aim to take so that
NOVA continues to stand out among the
best universities, both at European and
global level.
Let us mention that, in the present
academic year, our University was not
only one of the most sought at national
level by freshmen, many of whom have
distinguished it by choosing most of the
courses taught at NOVA as their first
option in their application process to
higher education, but also note that the
majority of the students graduated in it
had great conditions for employment.
Where research is concerned,
the evaluation promoted by the
Portuguese Foundation for Science
and Technology (Fundação para a
Ciência e a Tecnologia), revealed that,
at national level, 3 of our research
units were evaluated as “Exceptional”,
11 as “Excellent” and 16 as “Very
Good”. These results place NOVA in
an enviable position at national level.
At international level, the ranking
compiled by the Times Higher Education
recognized NOVA as one of the world’s
top 100 universities under 50 years
old, and the QS World University
Rankings 2014 ranked it in the 312th
position worldwide, in a universe of 863
nominated institutions, having climbed
41 places when compared to the
previous year.

RECTOR´S MESSAGE
A Universidade NOVA de Lisboa,
a NOVA, como é conhecida, e
reconhecida, em Portugal e no
Mundo, é uma instituição ágil e
dinâmica onde se investiga para
descobrir e transformar, se ensina com
rigor e paixão e se reforçam, todos os
dias, as relações e as parcerias com os
mais diversos sectores da sociedade.
A nossa localização, em três concelhos
da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa e
muito brevemente num quarto, torna
a NOVA um polo de atração para os
jovens do ensino secundário da região,
e do resto do país, que nos procuram
em quantidades muito superiores
às que nos permitem disponibilizar
através das vagas decididas a nível
nacional. Esses jovens sabem bem
como os envolvemos na nossa cultura
universitária, que passa a ser a deles,
e o valor de um diploma da NOVA no
atualmente difícil mercado do trabalho.
Somos, cada vez mais, uma
universidade internacional, visível
no aumento do número de alunos
estrangeiros, sobretudo ao nível
dos mestrados. Estamos a preparar,

cuidadosamente, o acesso de
estudantes internacionais aos nossos
primeiros ciclos mas iremos atuar,
como sempre, não fazendo concessões
em relação à qualidade do ensino. A
nossa oferta curricular já inclui mais de
10% de ciclos de estudos partilhados
entre unidades orgânicas da NOVA e
também com outras universidades
portuguesas e estrangeiras,
A qualidade da nossa investigação
científica foi mais uma vez reconhecida
a nível internacional com a atribuição,
em 2014, por parte do European
Research Council, de quatro bolsas
milionárias de investigação, num valor
individual acima de um milhão de
euros.
As nossas relações com a sociedade
não são apenas na ciência e na
tecnologia mas também nas áreas
sociais e na cultura como se pode
constatar, quase diariamente, pelas
intervenções dos nossos professores
e investigadores fora das paredes da
NOVA. A nossa estratégia de promoção
do empreendedorismo estudantil foi
reconhecida pela Startup Lisboa.
O nosso envolvimento na medicina e
na saúde resulta de sermos a única
universidade portuguesa com três
instituições dedicadas à formação, à
investigação e à prática nessas áreas
da maior importância para o nosso
futuro global.
Espero que esta breve introdução
vos tenha estimulado a ler os textos
que se seguem! Vão conhecer uma
universidade vibrante e diferente,
virada para as pessoas. Contem
connosco porque, na NOVA, as
pessoas contam. É convosco que

Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, NOVA,
as it is known, and recognized, in
Portugal and around the World, is an
agile and dynamic institution where
we do research to discover and
transform, we teach with rigour and
passion, and strengthen, every day,
the relations and partnerships with
society.
Our location, in three municipalities of
the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, shortly
in four, makes NOVA an attractive
pole to the secondary school students
from the region, and from the rest
of the country, that come to us in
higher numbers than the available
vacancies at national level. These
young people are well aware of the
way we involve them in our university
culture, that becomes theirs, and of
the value of a degree at NOVA, in the
currently difficult labour market, both
in Portugal and abroad.
We are, increasingly, an international
university, with a growing number
of foreign students, especially in
master programmes. We are carefully
preparing the access of international
students to our first cycle courses but,
as always, we will achieve this without
compromising the quality of our
educational programmes. Ten percent
of our cycles of study are already
given in partnerships involving NOVA
academic units and also national and
international universities.
The quality of our scientific
research was once again recognized
internationally with the winning,
in 2014, by the European Research
Council, of four millionaire research
grants, each worth over one million
euros.

only Portuguese university with three
institutions dedicated to the training,
research and practice in these areas,
of great importance to our global
future.
It is my hope that this brief
introduction has motivated you
to read the whole brochure! You
will meet a vibrant and committed

Our relations with society are not
only in the fields of science and
technology, but also in social areas
and culture, as is evident, on an almost
daily basis, by the interventions of our
teaching staff and researchers outside

Lisboa é a capital de Portugal e situase na margem norte do estuário do
rio Tejo. É a cidade mais ocidental da
Europa continental e fica, mais ou
menos, no centro do país, à distância
de 300 km do Algarve no sul, e a 400
km da fronteira norte com a Espanha.
A cidade tem cerca de 600.000
habitantes, no entanto, se incluirmos
a sua área metropolitana, a população
da Grande Lisboa aumenta para quase
3 milhões de pessoas.
A capital de Portugal está construída
sobre sete colinas, com vista para o
Rio Tejo, a alma da cidade. Lisboa,
a musa inspiradora das grandes
descobertas marítimas, mantém
um olhar orgulhoso sobre o Oceano
Atlântico.
Tanto no centro como nos arredores

Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal
and lies on the north bank of the
Tagus estuary where it broadens to
enter the Atlantic Ocean. It is the
westernmost city in mainland Europe
and lies more or less in the centre of
the country: approximately 300 km
from the Algarve in the south, and
400 km from the northern border
with Spain. Approximately 600 000
people live in Lisbon. However, if one
includes the various satellite towns,
the population of greater Lisbon rises
to approximately 3 million people.
Built on seven hills overlooking the
Tagus river, the very soul of the city,
Lisbon, the muse that inspired the
great maritime discoveries, stands
proudly at the Atlantic Ocean.

A Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia
(FCT/NOVA), localizada no Campus
de Caparica (30 ha), a sul de Lisboa,
é hoje uma das mais prestigiadas
escolas portuguesas de Ciências e
de Engenharia. Com cerca de 8 000
estudantes, dispõe de 440 docentes
(95% doutorados) e 200 funcionários
não docentes nos seus 14 Setores
Departamentais e 6 Serviços de Apoio.

The Faculty of Science and Technology
(FCT/NOVA) located at the Campus
of Caparica (30 ha), south of Lisbon,
is today one of the most prestigious
Portuguese engineering and science

FCT/NOVA participates in the
consortia sponsored by the
Portuguese State with the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT), University of Carnegie Mellon
(CMU) and the University of Texas
at Austin (UTA) offering some of its
advanced study programmes. With
an intensive relationship culture with
the exterior, FCT/NOVA has strong
links with several Portuguese and
Foreign Universities, related to the
exchange of teachers or students in
the framework of the existing 300
bilateral agreements or within the
numerous European and National
research projects.
The recent introduction in all its
in entrepreneurship was also not
forgotten, thus increasing even
more the abundant existence in FCT/
NOVA of students’ and Professors’
entrepreneurial drive which led to the
creation of many successful spin-offs,
that transfer knowledge to the market
and help create value and social
impact.

Como estudante do mestrado de Engenharia Geológica,
tive a oportunidade de escrever a minha tese na FCT/NOVA
durante o meu período de Erasmus. O meu orientador, o
Professor Rodrigues Carvalho, deu-me uma grande ajuda, foi
flexível e paciente. Aprendi bastante sempre que o consultei.
Passei muito tempo na Biblioteca da FCT/NOVA, que foi um
local de estudo ideal e onde os funcionários foram sempre

As a master student in Engineering Geology, I had a chance to
write my Msc. thesis at FCT/NOVA during my Erasmus period.
My coordinator, Professor Rodrigues Carvalho was a great
help for me, he was flexible and patient, I learnt a lot during
our consultations. I spent a lot of time in the library of FCT/
NOVA, which was a perfect place for studying and, also, the
staff was really helpful. I really recommend FCT/NOVA to
those who would like to work on something bigger during
their Erasmus, instead of just participating in classes. It was a
good experience.

Criada em 1977, a Faculdade de
Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH/
NOVA) é uma unidade interdisciplinar
cujos objetivos de ensino e
investigação se caracterizam pela
diversidade e criatividade de saberes.
Situada no centro de Lisboa, integra
um total de 5 154 alunos, sendo
2 693 de licenciatura, 1 583 de
mestrado e pós-graduações e 878 de
doutoramento. O corpo docente conta
com 305 membros, na sua quase
totalidade doutorados.
A FCSH/NOVA disponibiliza 14
licenciaturas (uma das quais em
horário pós-laboral), durante as
quais os alunos podem beneficiar
de programas de mobilidade (ex.:
Erasmus+), que envolvem anualmente
mais de 400 estudantes. Na formação
pós-graduada, oferece 11 cursos
de pós-graduação, 48 cursos de
mestrado e 27 de doutoramento,
todos lecionados em regime póslaboral e alguns deles em e-learning.
A excelência na investigação nas
áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas,
uma das vocações da FCSH/NOVA,
é assegurada por 17 Unidades de
Investigação (UI) e polos de centros
interuniversitários. Destas, 13 UI são
financiadas pela Fundação para a
Ciência e a Tecnologia (FC&T), das
quais quatro foram classificadas com
Excelente e oito com Muito Bom.
A crescente comunidade científica da

Founded in 1977, the Faculdade de
Ciências Sociais e Humanas (Faculty
of Social Sciences and Humanities)
is an interdisciplinary unit with
teaching and research objectives,
characterized by the diversity and
creativity of knowledge. Located near

academic unit of Universidade NOVA

Degree in Medicine, 356 postgraduate

A Nova Direito, a Faculdade de Direito
da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, foi
fundada em 1996, como ‘polo inovador
no desenvolvimento da Ciência Jurídica’.
A escolha alargada de disciplinas de
opção e os cursos em áreas pouco
exploradas (Arbitragem, Bioética,
Desporto, Estrangeiros, Legística,
Segurança) acentuam a distinção da
marca NOVA.
O 1.º Ciclo, para além das principais
disciplinas jurídicas, oferece um
vasto leque de disciplinas de opção
com o objetivo de proporcionar uma
compreensão alargada do mundo
intelectual e social em que o Direito
se insere. O 2.º Ciclo vai de domínios
tão relevantes como a preparação
de excelência para as tradicionais
profissões forenses (Mestrado Forense e
Arbitragem), até às áreas dos mercados
de capitais, banca e seguros (Mestrado
Direito e Mercados Financeiros),
passando por áreas de enorme
desenvolvimento no futuro, como o
Direito Marítimo (Mestrado em Direito
e Economia do Mar: A Governação do
Mar). Oferta esta que inclui ainda os já
reputados Mestrados em Direito Público
e em Direito Internacional e Europeu,
Direito e Segurança, assim como em
Direito e Gestão. O 3.º Ciclo, implicando
a discussão do projeto de tese e a
apresentação de um tema ao SPEED
(Seminário permanente sobre o estado
e estudo do Direito) permite ultrapassar
a mera participação nos tradicionais
seminários de investigação.

The Nova Law School at Universidade
NOVA de Lisboa was founded in 1996, in
order to challenge a rather conservative,
traditional way of teaching and learning
law in Portugal.
The Faculty teaches three cycles
(Bachelor, Master, PhD). The first takes
eight semesters, the second three and
the third from eight up to ten. In all of
them the students are prepared both in
core, compulsory subjects and in rather
a wide variety of optional courses.
In order to answer the growing demand
by foreign students, some courses, some
seminars and theses supervision are
carried out in English.
CEDIS is our main research centre. We
host centres of public (community)
service which also carry out
some teaching and research: RAL
(Alternative Dispute Resolution);
ANTÍGONA (issues of discrimination,
with a view to helping actual or potential
victims); CPIC (copyright and patents

O Instituto de Higiene e Medicina
Tropical (IHMT/NOVA) é uma jovem
instituição centenária, ímpar na
academia portuguesa. Vocacionado
inicialmente para o estudo, ensino
e clínica das doenças tropicais,
evoluiu recentemente para uma
abordagem integrada que vai desde
o nível molecular aos sistemas
globais de saúde, adotando, sem
abandonar a sua vocação tropical,
um forte empenho na resolução dos
problemas de saúde que, em todos os
continentes, afligem os mais pobres e
os excluídos.
The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine (IHMT/NOVA) is a young
centenary institution, unique in the
Portuguese academy. Aimed initially
at the study, teaching and medical
practice related to tropical diseases,
IHMT/NOVA has recently evolved
towards an integrated approach,
ranging from the molecular level
to global health systems, adopting,
without abandoning its tropical
vocation, a strong commitment to
solving health problems that afflict
the poorest and the excluded in all
continents.
Desde a sua origem, o instituto tem
estado à frente da investigação
das grandes endemias tropicais, e
estas linhas de trabalho continuam
atuais, reforçadas por estudos sobre
tuberculose, viroses prevalentes
nos trópicos, saúde dos viajantes ou
populações migrantes e sistemas de
serviços de saúde, que lhe emprestam
um forte cariz internacional no âmbito
de redes e projetos em parceria.
Since its inception, the Institute has
been at the forefront of research
directed at tropical endemic diseases,
and these lines are still part of its
current work, reinforced by research
work on tuberculosis, several viruses
prevalent in the tropics, travelers’
and migrant population’s health and
health services systems, which lend
to IHMT/NOVA a strong international
character as part of networks and
projects in partnership.
O trabalho de investigação está
intimamente associado a programas
de doutoramento e mestrado,
bem como à assessoria técnica a
ministérios da saúde, em Portugal
e outros países. A qualidade do seu
desempenho foi reconhecida pela
OMS, quando nos atribuiu o estatuto
de Centro Colaborador para Políticas
e Planeamento da Força de Trabalho
em Saúde.

A melhoria da prestação dos serviços de saúde e,
consequentemente, da saúde da população de um país,
passa necessariamente pelo uso de abordagens baseadas
em evidências científicas e, para tal, é necessário pessoal
altamente competente, formado em instituições que tenham
larga experiência em saúde global. O IHMT/NOVA é uma
dessas instituições que tem mais de um século ao serviço da
ciência tropical e das doenças de pobreza, o que se enquadra
nas realidades do meu país, Moçambique.
Improving the provision of health services and consequently
the health of the population of a country, passes, necessarily,
through the use of approaches based on scientific evidence.
This requires highly competent staff, formed in institutions
that have extensive experience in global health. IHMT/NOVA
is one such institution that has with more than a century of
commitment to tropical sciences and diseases of poverty,
what befits in the realities of my country, Mozambique.

Estudar na NOVA IMS foi uma experiência agradável e
inesquecível para mim. Gostei muito do equilíbrio entre as
componentes teórica e prática das unidades curriculares, a
excelente qualidade do corpo docente assim como a relação
próxima entre os alunos e os docentes. Conheci muitas
pessoas simpáticas, que me ajudaram a integrar neste novo
ambiente, e fiz novos amigos. Essa experiência melhorou a
minha formação académica e alargou os meus horizontes. Irei
recordar a NOVA IMS como uma das fases mais emocionantes
da minha vida de estudante.
Studying at NOVA IMS was an enjoyable and unforgettable
experience for me. I really liked the balance between theory
and practice in the courses, high competence of teaching staff
as well as close relationship between students and teachers.
I met a lot of friendly people that were willing to help me
to get used to new environment and made new friends. My
experience there has enhanced my educational background

O Instituto de Tecnologia Química
e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB/

A longa experiência do ITQB/NOVA
em Biociências Moleculares orienta a

Estou a fazer o meu doutoramento em Engenharia Química no
ITQB/NOVA e tem sido uma ótima experiência, tanto a nível
científico como pessoal. Aqui, tenho acesso a um programa
de estudos que cobre uma grande variedade de tópicos e
a muitos recursos para a minha investigação. Além disso,
tenho o privilégio de participar em conferências científicas, o
que me tem ajudado a estabelecer contactos com cientistas
reconhecidos internacionalmente. Recomendaria o ITQB/
NOVA a qualquer pessoa que esteja a considerar uma carreira
científica, dentro ou fora da academia.
I am finishing my PhD degree in Chemical Engineering
at ITQB/NOVA and it has been a great experience both
scientifically and personally. Here, I have access to an
extended syllabus covering a wide range of topics and to a
number of resources to complete my research. Furthermore,
I have the privilege to participate in international conferences,
which have helped me to get in contact with many recognized
scientists. Overall I would recommend ITQB/NOVA to anyone
considering a scientific career, inside or outside academia.

Encontro-me atualmente a realizar a minha tese de
doutoramento na Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, no
contexto do Programa Doutoral conjunto entre o Erasmus
Mundus e o Phoenix Dynamics of Health and Welfare, do qual
a Escola é membro. O fato da ENSP/NOVA ser uma escola
pequena facilitou a minha adaptação e permitiu uma relação
de proximidade com funcionários, alunos e docentes. Esta
estadia tem proporcionado a oportunidade de obter uma
abordagem multidisciplinar e próxima aos sistemas de saúde,
que resulta da natureza prática e baseada na evidência dos
cursos e da diversidade profissional e de formação base dos
alunos.
I am currently preparing my PhD thesis at the National School
of Public Health, in the context of a European Joint Erasmus
Mundus Doctoral Program, Phoenix Dynamics of Health and
Welfare, of which the School is member. The small-scale
dimension of ENSP has made comfortable my adaptation
and participation with staff and pupils, as well as facilitating
contact with professors. The permanence has been an
opportunity to be exposed to a multi-disciplinary and insider’s
approach to health systems’ studies, resulting from the
practical and evidence-based nature of courses and largely
professional background of pupils.

A NOVA Escola Doutoral iniciou a sua
atividade em janeiro de 2013, com uma
parceria académica com o Imperial
College London, uma colaboração
institucional com a Fundação Oriente e
o suporte da Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Integra o Programa Europeu para
pessoal não académico das Escolas
Doutorais: PRIDE - Professionals in
Doctoral Education.
Visa contribuir para a excelência da
formação doutoral da NOVA, através
da oferta de formação complementar e
transversal aos estudantes do 3.º ciclo
e aos seus supervisores. Tem como
objetivo a criação de um espaço aberto
de discussão e criatividade, fomentando
a partilha das melhores práticas entre
os programas doutorais e promovendo
a cooperação interinstitucional, a nível
nacional e internacional.
Ao longo destes dois anos, ofereceu, de
forma gratuita, formação transversal a
mais de 785 estudantes, cerca de 325
em 2013 e 460 em 2014. No último
ano, a Escola alargou a oferta para os
doutorados, tendo oferecido formação a
cerca de 40 supervisores.

Conversas e o livro Redes Sociais
para Cientistas. As NOVAs Conversas
são diálogos interdisciplinares
com convidados de várias áreas
do conhecimento, organizados

O livro Redes Sociais para Cientistas é
a primeira publicação da NOVA Escola
Doutoral; surgiu na sequência do curso
com o mesmo nome, sendo da autoria
dos Professores Ana Sanchez, António
Granado e Joana Lobo Antunes.

NOVA Doctoral School aims to

The last two years, more than 785
PhD students attended the courses

NOVA Talks and the book Social Media
for Scientists are among the most

the first publication of NOVA Doctoral
School; it has been written by Ana

A investigação da Universidade NOVA
de Lisboa tem vindo a crescer, tanto
ao nível qualitativo como quantitativo.
Em 2012 a NOVA foi responsável por
aproximadamente 10% dos artigos
científicos portugueses indexados ao

com um impacto normalizado de 1,19,
o que significa que a NOVA apresenta

PROFILE
A política de internacionalização
da NOVA integra iniciativas
institucionais que são levadas a
cabo pela Reitoria e iniciativas que
resultam da atividade das Unidades
Orgânicas (UO) da NOVA. Alguns
resultados da iniciativa da Reitoria
decorrem do aproveitamento dos
recursos financeiros disponibilizados
pela União Europeia (UE) para as
instituições de ensino superior (IES).
Neste contexto, destaca-se em 2014
a transição das tradicionais ações
Erasmus (que envolvem mobilidade
na UE, Erasmus Mundus e outros)
para o novo programa Erasmus +. O
projeto OutCOME marca uma primeira
participação da NOVA no programa
Erasmus +.
As UO da NOVA desenvolvem uma
intensa atividade de mobilidade,
dentro e fora da UE. As UO escolhem
os seus parceiros em função da
excelência académica, capacidade de
ensino e de investigação, importância
geográfica, diversidade cultural, bem

como do grau de complementaridade
com os seus próprios interesses
pedagógicos. Os principais objetivos
são: melhorar a qualidade da
mobilidade de estudantes e de
pessoal docente e não docente, bem
como intensificar a cooperação entre
as IES e entre estas e as empresas;
apoiar o desenvolvimento de
conteúdos e serviços, aproximando
IES e empresas; contribuir para o
sucesso dos estudantes e melhorar
a qualidade dos cursos e do ensino
ministrado.
NOVA’s internationalization policy
integrates institutional initiatives that
are carried out by the Rectorate and
initiatives resulting from the activity
of the Academic Units of NOVA. Some
results from the Rectorate initiative
result from the use of financial means
from the European Union (EU) for
higher education institutions (HEIs).
In this context, in 2014 there is the
transition of the Erasmus actions,
from its traditional form (involving
mobility in the EU Erasmus Mundus
and others) to the new Erasmus +
programme. The project outCOME
marks NOVA’s first participation in the
Erasmus + programme.
NOVA’s Academic Units develop an
intense activity of mobility within
and outside the EU. The Academic
Units choose their partners in
function of its academic excellence,
teaching and research capacity,
geographic, cultural diversity, and
the degree of complementarity with
its own pedagogical interests. The
main objectives are: to improve the
quality of mobility for students and
teaching and non-teaching staff,
as well as intensify cooperation
between HEIs and between them
and the companies; support the
development of content and services
to bring together IES and companies;
contribute to the success of students
and improve the courses’ quality and
teaching standards.
PROJETO outCOME
Consórcio do Mar
e das Energias
Renováveis
Em 2014, e ao abrigo do novo
programa Erasmus+, a NOVA
formalizou a sua participação
enquanto IES parceira no consórcio
outCOME. O Consórcio outCOME
visa proporcionar estágios
profissionais (Erasmus Placements)
em Portugal a estudantes europeus
do Ensino Superior, promovendo a
internacionalização das empresas e
organizações portuguesas, e também
financiar estágios curriculares e
profissionais dos alunos e diplomados
das Universidades consorciadas, nos
países participantes no Programa
Erasmus+.
O Consórcio do Mar e das Energias
Renováveis (outCOME) pretende
afirmar-se no contexto nacional e
europeu como sendo uma entidade de
referência e de excelência, promotora
de oportunidades para estudantes e
diplomados do ensino superior nas
áreas temáticas relacionadas com
o mar e as energias renováveis. O
outCOME foi criado por iniciativa
das universidades portuguesas que
administram cursos de excelência
ligados ao mar e às energias
renováveis.
In 2014, and under the new Erasmus
+ programme, NOVA formalized its
participation as partner HEI in the
outCOME consortium. The outCOME
Consortium aims to provide work
placements (Erasmus Placements)
in Portugal to European Higher
Education students, promoting the
internationalization of Portuguese
companies and organizations,
and also finance curricular and
professional placements to students
and graduates of the consortium
universities, in countries participating
in the Erasmus +.
The Consortium of “Mar e das
Energias Renováveis” (outCOME) aims
to be a reference of excellency in
the national and European context,
promoting opportunities for students
and graduates of higher education
in subject areas related to the sea
and the renewable energies. The
outCOME was created by Portuguese
universities that minister courses
of excellence related to sea and to
renewable energies.

students numbers have experienced a
slight decrease, the Erasmus mobility
remains at the top of the students’
preferences in terms of exchange

No ano letivo 2015/16 terá início o novo programa de bolsas de mobilidade
Erasmus+ entre a NOVA e diversas universidades parceiras fora da Europa.
Estas Instituições são oriundas de um grupo de países bastante heterogéneo
e de diferentes áreas geográficas e continentes, tais como: Argélia, Marrocos,
Tunísia, Egito, Israel, Palestina, Kosovo, Quirguistão, Rússia, Argentina, Brasil,
Perú, Uruguai, Paraguai, México, Japão e Austrália. Este novo programa
financiará bolsas para estudantes e staff docente e não docente.
The new Erasmus + mobility scholarships program between NOVA and several
partner universities outside Europe will start in the academic year 2015/16.
These institutions belong to a very heterogeneous group of countries from
different geographical areas and continents: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt ,
Israel, Palestine, Kosovo , Kyrgyzstan , Russia , Argentina , Brazil , Peru , Uruguay,
Paraguay , Mexico, Japan and Australia. This new program will provide scholarships

Em 2013, a Comissão Europeia
aprovou o projeto FELLOW-MUNDUS,
coordenado pela NOVA. O projeto
prevê a atribuição de bolsas para
estudantes e pessoal docente e
não-docente da América Latina e
Europa, para realizarem um período
de mobilidade nas Instituições de
Ensino Superior (IES) do consórcio
do projeto. As bolsas incluem um
subsídio mensal, viagem, seguro e
isenção de propinas.
In 2013, the European Commission
approved the FELLOW-MUNDUS
project, coordinated by NOVA.
The project foresees the award of
scholarships to both students and
teaching and non-teaching staff
from Latin America and Europe, to
undertake a period of mobility in the
project’s consortium higher education
institutions (HEI). The scholarships
include a monthly allowance, travel,
insurance and tuition fees.
Durante a primeira convocatória,
em 2014, houve um total de 1 377
candidatos ao FELLOW-MUNDUS,
para um total de 147 bolsas
disponibilizadas pelo projeto. Destas,
foram outorgadas 114 bolsas. As
restantes 33 bolsas serão distribuídas
numa segunda convocatória de
candidaturas.
During the first call, in 2014, there
was total of 1 377 candidates to
the FELLOW-MUNDUS project, for a
total of 147 scholarships. Of these,
114 scholarships were granted. The
remaining 33 grants will be distributed
in a second call for applications.

The Leiden Ranking 2015 assesses
and considers the scientific provision
of 750 best world educational
institutions. NOVA is leading in the
fields of Biomedical and Health
Sciences and Social Sciences and
Humanities.

NOVA stands out among Portuguese
universities, with the highest score (A
– Very Good) in 13 of the 31 indicators
used in the evaluation.
The U-Multirank compares the
performance of more than 1 200
higher education institutions, from 85
countries and covers many aspects
of higher education, organized
in five different groups: teaching
and learning, research, knowledge
transfer, international orientation and
regional engagament.

NOVA was once again selected for
Times Higher Education Ranking 2014
- Top 100 under 50, for the 3rd time
in a row. NOVA participates in this
ranking since its 1st edition in 2012,
and has registered the highest climb
in this latest edition compared with
the other Portuguese universities
listed.
QS Top 50 under 50
NOVA was featured in the QS Top 50
under 50 ranking in 2014, which lists
the top 50 institutions with less than
50 years. NOVA is the only Portuguese
institution on the list.

A Inserção Profissional dos
Diplomados da Universidade NOVA
de Lisboa é analisada para os três
grupos de diplomados (licenciados,
mestres e doutores), mediante
um observatório que teve o seu
início em 2010 (OBIPNOVA). São
aplicados questionários anual e
quinquenalmente, para avaliar a
situação profissional dos indivíduos
que se diplomaram no ano anterior
e para reconstituir o seu trajeto
profissional nos cinco anos após
obtenção do grau. As amostras
apresentam representatividade
estatística dos cursos existentes na
NOVA, com um erro máximo de 5%
para um nível de confiança de 95%.

The Professional Insertion of
Graduates is analyzed for the three
groups of graduates (bachelor,
master and doctorate) at an
observatory that started in 2010
(OBIPNOVA). Questionnaires are
applied annually and every five
years, to assess the professional
situation of individuals who have
graduated in the previous year and to
reconstitute their professional career
in the five years after obtaining the
degree. The samples have statistical
representativeness of existing courses
at NOVA, with a maximum error of 5%
for a 95% confidence level.

A NOVA foi premiada pela Startup
Lisboa como a Universidade
Portuguesa que, em 2014, mais
apoiou o empreendedorismo em
Portugal.
Na área do Empreendedorismo,
a NOVA tem como objetivo a
criação e desenvolvimento do
Ecossistema Empreendedor dentro
da Universidade, através do
envolvimento de várias entidades.
Pretende, assim, estimular a cultura

NOS é uma inovadora iniciativa
conjunta da NOS e da Universidade

e campi. O objetivo fundamental é

O Gabinete funciona às terças e
quintas sob marcação e permite um
acompanhamento semanal, quinzenal

NOVA is creating and developing an
Entrepreneurial Ecosystem within the
University, through the involvement
of various entities. At NOVA we seek

STARTERS ACADEMY
POWERED BY NOS
Starters Academy powered by NOS is
an innovative joint initiative of NOS
and NOVA. This is the first Portuguese
entrepreneurship academy within
the University focused on all students
at the University, spread across
different schools and campus. The
main goal is to provide students with
the opportunity to work ideas and
innovative projects together in a
multidisciplinary environment getting
knowledge through entrepreneurial
experiences, in a logic of full market
orientation. The Academy offers the
following programmes:
> NOVA IDEA COMPETITION
POWERED BY BPI
This is the internal competition
for “Business Plans” that aims to
promote entrepreneurial culture
within the university and stimulate
multidisciplinary work through the
creation of teams composed of
members from different Schools.
> CREATING AND MANAGING
ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES
This course was designed to stimulate
the entrepreneurial spirit of the best
students of the University. The goal
is to provide participants with the
basic tools so that they can develop
a business initiative and turn it into
reality.
> ENTREPRENEURSHIP OFFICE
In Entrepreneurship office Students,
Professors, Researchers and Alumni
find support for developing their
ideas, grow their business or even
go international. The Office works
on Tuesdays and Thursdays by
appointment and allows a weekly,
biweekly or monthly monitoring
in business creation or project
development.
> WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES
Every year we developed numerous
conferences and workshops in order
to motivate and encourage the best
entrepreneurial practices in our
students and our University.

financeira, concedendo apoios sociais

Os SASNOVA concedem ainda apoios
sociais indiretos a todos os alunos da
NOVA, nomeadamente através das
cantinas e residências, bem como nas
áreas do Desporto, Cultura e Saúde.
The mission of the Social Welfare
Services of Universidade NOVA de
Lisboa (SASNOVA) is to guarantee
that no student is excluded from the
university due to financial difficulties,
thus providing direct social support to
1st and 2nd cycle students. SASNOVA
provide indirect social support to all
NOVA students, namely through the
canteens and residences, as well as
in the areas of Sports, Culture and
Health services.
