Marinha Grande, 2010 Cidália Ferreira This nature’s guide carries us on a journey through time. It takes us from the Jurassic period up to the present time. We become involved in a Pine Forest Environment and a Maritime Environment, with flora and fauna as different as its environment. We are framed in History, in Nature, the sea and the woods, the beach and the dunes where these two spaces evolve and combine, the Ocean and the Pinhal do Rei (The King’s Pine Forest), which involve S. Pedro de Moel. This is more than a nature’s guide, since history, made by Man, mingles with Nature through this connection. Where Humanity and Nature mingle, the hand of Man and the force of nature, where these two elements unite and merge, where no one knows who or what intervenes where. One almost does not make out who starts what, if it was Man who intervened, or it was Nature that interfered with Man. The roots of History interact with the roots of Nature, in a single unit. Man makes the history of the Pinhal do Rei and this Pinhal acts in its history. It is impossible to enter into this vastness and not feel our smallness. And the sensation in these two different spaces (Sea and Forest) is identical. To see its grandeur is to live the well-being of the space that creates roots on our energy and the peace that transcends us and regenerates us. If Pinhal do Rei is a sacred place, the Sea inspires us to reverence. Both are sung by poets! They were and they are educational! They are a very rich shelter for fauna and flora and of centuries of humanity. Pinhal do Rei is an indescribable beauty of spaces of colour, light, whispering brooks, sound, animals and plants... of silences broken by a trembling, or dancing leaf. The Sea, the coast, is ecstasy of voyages of imagination, of the history that is registered and engraved on the fossils we encounter. And this guide acquaints us with all the inhabitants, from fauna to flora that have the good fortune of living here and to provide us with the good fortune of cohabiting with them. Let yourself be guided and do come and discover for yourself a exceptionable space. Marinha Grande, 2010. As others have said before, we only conserve that which we love and we only love that which we know. Welcome to one of the most symbolic beaches of the Portuguese central coastline! The place of sojourn of aristocrats and poets, São Pedro de Moel was born on the border between the extensive green cloak of the King’s Pine Forest and the Atlantic Ocean. The settlement and the beach afford a fusion between sea, pine forest, history, architecture and poetry, lending us peace of mind and establishing an emotional link which makes us want to stay and self-evidently return! These characteristics, along with its prime geographic location, endow São Pedro de Moel with a wedge of natural beauty and make this place one of the most beautiful and attractive in Mainland Portugal. Nature’s Guide 10|11 Natural Characteristics São Pedro de Moel is situated on the sea board of the district of Marinha Grande in the region of the Pinhal Litoral of the centre coastline of mainland Portugal. In Mediterranian clime with Atlantic strong influence, the region falls under the influence of the humid coastline and the dryer, hotter climate of the Mediterranean area, bestowing upon it a greater diversity of landscapes and species, variable in line with proximity to the sea. From a geological perspective, the settlement is surrounded by outcrops of rocks aged between 65 and 199 Ma (from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods) part of an extensive coastal plain covered by dunes which extend as far as the Serra da Boa Viagem. During the course of the evolutive history of the earth, in the Lower Jurassic period, the cliffs of São Pedro de Moel emerged, comprising successions of carbonated rocks (made of marly limestone) which correspond to a former shallow marine environment. Regarded as being of major scientific and teaching interest, as regards the age of rocky outcrops and types of fossils present, the cliffs of the region of São Pedro de Moel have the best outcrop of Mesozoic ammonites known in Portugal. Throughout almost all of this coastal plain covered in dunes are the National Forests dominated by the marine pine (Pinus pinaster). The National Forest surrounding São Pedro de Moel is currently called the National Forest of Leiria (Pinhal do Rei – the King’s Pine Forest in the past) and it is situated in the district of Marinha Grande, being bordered to the North by the River Lis and to the South by the alignment of the beach of Água de Madeiros. When crossing the area surrounding the settlement we can contemplate different natural environments which extend from the age-old maritime pine forest with 11023ha to running water courses in Stream of São Pedro, to the cliffs exposed to the strong undulation of the Atlantic and the wild dunes of the frontal coastline range. Some of the habitats to be found on this coastline are classified by the Habitats Directive as priority for the conservation of nature in the European Union. The illustrious geologist Paulo Choffat characterised the region of São Pedro de Moel and all the surrounding area as testimony to “a series of important phenomena which occurred in this region... to which he gave the name of tifonic valleys or areas, by analogy to the legend of Typhoon or Tuphon who wrought asunder the womb of mother earth to be born, as here too the entrails of the start of Second Earth Age appear“ (Morais J., 1936). No séc. Moel and in 1463, King Afonso V, donated them to the Count of Vila Real (Pedro de Menezes). In the 200 subsequent years, São Pedro de Moel was in the possession of the family of the Marquis of Vila Real until 1641, the year in which Marquis (Luís de Noronha e Menezes) was accused along with his son Miguel Luís de Menezes (the Duke of Caminha), of conspiracy against King João IV and his assets became part of national heritage. In the 18th century, with the growing importance of the King’s Pine Forest, the General Administration of the Forests of the Kingdom was created based in Marinha Grande, and the 1st administrator Luis Frederico de Warnhagen was appointed, with the settlement of São Pedro de Moel falling under the aegis of this entity. From this period onwards the national forests become a priority for the country and in 1790 the Minister Martinho Melo e Castro ordered the transport of the woods for ship-building to the Arsenal of Ribeira das Naus in the vicinity of São Pedro de Moel. Some years later, in around 1824, the warehouses for wood storage (Tercenas) were constructed around the current square of the settlement, with a view to carrying out their embarkation to the main ports of the country. São Pedro de Moel in the Past Tradition has it that São Pedro de Moel served in a very remote age of the 13th century B.C., as a place of passage or even anchorage spot for Phoenician vessels (which passed this way on their long commercial journeys towards the North of Europe). In the distant past, to be precise in 1300, King Dinis donated to the Holy Queen Isabel the fields of Ulmar and the region of São Pedro de São Pedro de Moel em 1890 São Pedro de Moel in 1890 Guia da Natureza . Nature’s Guide 16|17 Praia na Década de 40 Beach on the 1940’s The growth in the settlement of São Pedro de Moel occurred subsequently as from 1880, the year in which a 9 km private road was built connecting it to Marinha Grande. As regards the various residences which emerge after this date, worthy of special mention is the home of the poet Afonso Lopes Vieira, constructed by his grandfather between 1906 and 1909 on the ruins of the former home of the Marquis of Vila Real. On February 15th 1912 the Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse was inaugurated, which is 30 metres high and has a range of up to 30/40 miles. In addition to its navigation warning function, the lighthouse was also an important watchtower for detecting fires in the pine forest, which is why from its location one of the branches of the former “toy train” line (forest train) was built which crossed the Pine Forest as far as Marinha Grande. From 1923 onwards, the year in which the forest services assigned São Pedro de Moel to the Marinha City Council for the settlement, the hamlet witnessed a great development in infrastructures and in 1940 the local government charged Júlio Neto Marques with drawing up an urbanisation plan for the settlement, with the layout of Afonso Lopes Vieira square being the responsibility of the architect Camilo Korrodi (1938). Until the 1860’s São Pedro de Moel had an important casino for the central region which was located alongside the beach where recreational activities were pursued such as vaudeville theatres, cinema, dances, gatherings and games. The setting for numerous stories and legends intimately linked to the Portuguese aristocracy, navigation and the National Forests, São Pedro de Moel has evolved until today in parallel with the natural landscapes, deriving from the sea-land interconnection and the geological evolution of the coastline where specific human intervention is implicit. The King’s Pine Forest Genesis of the Portuguese forest services and the organization of Portuguese forests, the National Forest of Leiria, with 11023ha, includes the former Pinhal do Rei (King’s Pine Forest) and encapsulates 700 years of stories, personalities and natural evolutions, engraved in the “whispering green cathedral” situated in the district of Marinha Grande, south of the River Lis on the dunes of the coastline. With a strong historic link which dates back to the reign of King Dinis (the farmer), over several centuries the pine forest was subject to various improvements and expansions, highlighting the major, painstaking tree-planting works of the coastline dunes (in 1909), undertaken by the forest services and which resulted in the planting of pine forest as far as the sea in an area which had been deserted until then with shifting sand dunes. In practically sterile sand soils, the marine pine (Pinus pinaster) is the dominant species in a forest regime of monoculture. However, in various references to the indigenous flowers of the region the stone pine (Pinus pinea) emerges as a tree species native to the Portuguese sandy coastline. There is a consensus though that the geographic and geological characteristics of the region have irreversibly restricted the evolution of this area which, in conjunction with the Atlantic Ocean, forms the most imposing stone pine forest in the country where the highest dunes of the Iberian Peninsula can be found which are 70 metres high. The birthplace of the forests of the crown and the stage for Portuguese forest history, the King’s Pine Forest represents “the greatest national monument, an example of a richness that every day expands in the arid sand bank” (António Arala Pinto, 1939), “the whispering green cathedral” (Afonso Lopes Vieira, 1917) and “the first and greatest monument in Portugal” (Bernardino Barros Gomes, 1892). “How many times, on moonlit nights, did I not feel the desire to reveal the muffled conversation, the murmuring of these billions of trees which, from generation to generation, have witnessed the developing of the life of our Portugal, finding out its secrets to tell its story..”António Arala Pinto, 1938. The King’s Pine Forest today is still an example of a national and international forestry school, visited by groups of students and specialists from all around the world. An example of forest sustainability by dint of the balance attained between the conservation of natural resources and the production of excellent quality wood, the Leiria National Forest is today regarded as the model forest (in accordance with Regulatory Decree no.11 enacted on July 21st 2006 which approves the Regional Forest Organisational Plan for the Central Coastline). Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) is very abundant and occupies extensive areas where the light intensity is scarce. Also worthy of note are the St.John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) and asphodels (Asphodelus lusitanicus) on the edges of the pine forests. As regards the low, open bushland present on the sands of the protective pine forest, species of dunar sands develop with the occurrence of shrubland (Corema album), bell heather (Erica cinerea and Erica umbellata), the curry plant (Helichrysum picardi), the sage-leafed rock rose (Cistus salviifolius), the globe candytuft (Iberis procumbens) and parasitic plants (Cytinus hypocistis). Also associated with the shrub species of the pine forest are the snapdragons (Anthirrinus majus), the foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), the wild orchid (Limodorum abortivum), the flax-leaved Daphne (Daphne gnidium) and the lavender (Lavandula pedunculata). Nature’s Guide 26|27 The Stream of São Pedro The Stream of São Pedro is a running water course of rare beauty which crosses a coastline forest to merge with the Atlantic Ocean, where it traces, in unequal fashion, its estuary in the extensive sand flat of the golden beach. Situated in the heart of the King’s Pine Forest in the district of Marinha Grande, the small stream invites to carrying out various activities, from a picnic or a walk to the simple contemplation of a place which surprises by its interplays of light and remarkable trees which construct spots of rare lushness. At this place there is an awakening of the senses which results from the variety of colour, light and humidity, conducive to the existence of the royal fern (Osmunda regalis), the Southern Polypody (Polypodium australe) and the most varied species of lichens and mosses, typical of environments which do not suffer atmospheric pollution. On the banks around the stream a copse of deciduous trees stands out from the continuous green of the pine forest by the healthy mixture of species with such distinct origins. Some, already of an advanced age, let their decrepit trunks fall on the small bed on stormier winter days. The falling of older trees also affords small bridges which make it possible to discover this space rife with small concealed shelters. In addition to the Black Alder (Agnus glutinosa), the black poplar (Populus nigra), the willow (Salix sp.) and the Alder Blackthorn (Rhamnus frangula), typical of the streamside corridors bordering the rivers and streams of Portugal, there are other tree species though introduced by the forest services. In this riverside copse the English oak (Quercus robur), the birch (Betula celtiberica), The Northern Red Oak(Quercus rubra), the Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum), the Monkey puzzle (Auracaria araucana), the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), the common walnut (Juglans regia) and the sweet chestnut (Castanea savita) coexist, the latter two alongside the Tromelgo stream, where there used to be a forest nursery. Parallel to other areas of the King’s Pine Forest, the Australian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), the Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata) and the Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) have spread widely, contributing to the degradation of this habitat. Introduced into the National Forest on an experimental basis, the Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) has a great capacity for adaptation, despite its preponderant role in soil depletion, it being the case that, along the banks of the stream and its affluents some examples are present of majestic proportions, classified as remarkable trees. The riverside gallery of the Stream of São Pedro is in a forest protection area meaning that it is extremely important to provide shelter, food and water to a great diversity of animals, to wit of amphibia and reptiles like the Iberian frog (Rana iberica) and the Schreiber’s green lizard (Lacerta schreiberi), for example. Worthy of special mention amongst the group of fish is the ruivaco (Rutilus macrolepidotus), a Lusitanian endemism essential for the diet of the European otter (Lutra lutra) which also occurs here – both are protected species under Statute Law no.49 enacted on 24/02/2005. However, there are many animals which, occasionally or otherwise, frequent these sites in search of shelter and food, including the beautiful, furtive common genet (Genetta genetta), a frequent victim of being run over along the road bordering the stream. It is in this environment that we can also hear the vigorous sounds of the Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius), the moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) which hides amongst the branches of an alder tree on the water and the common buzzard (Buteo buteo) which, when returning to the nest where it left its young, makes its presence and protection clear. Also in the group of birds we can observe along the banks of the stream the lush blue bird – the kingfisher (Alcedo atthis),a protected species under the Birds Directive. Coastline Dune Cordon Pinus pinaster Contrasting with the rocky cliffs which surround São Pedro de Moel, there emerges to the North of the settlement, to be precise in Penedo do Cabo, a transition on the sea board where we can observe a beautiful landscape of the dune cordon (to the North) which accommodates a set of habitats stated in annex B-I of Statute Law no.49 enacted on 24/02/2005 which are extremely vulnerable to human impact. This dune cordon, which commences at Praia Velha and extends Northwards, is the result of human intervention, by way of the subsoil mobilization technique which set out to protect the centuries-old “snake-like” pine trees formed recently and which was at the origin of the characteristic marine pines which we can observe today. The curved form and the reduced stature of these maritime pines derive from the high salinity and from the action of maritime winds. The dunes are sandy habitats, exposed to the direct action of the sea, housing very specific vegetation perfectly adapted to extreme living conditions in an extremely wild atmosphere where salinity, scarcity of water and nutrients, excessive luminosity, strong winds and temperature variations place constraints on the organisms which live here. Playing a vital role, the dunes afford protection to the interior area of the winds and coastal sand mobility. The plants occurring at these sites are, in turn, perfectly adapted to survival of the inhospitable environment, and it is they who will ensure the settlement and consolidation of the sand. In the dunes to the north of Penedo do Cabo, the different species of native plants are observed, arranged in specific layers depending on their location and distance from the sea. From the typical herbaceous communities of the upper beach, with the European sea rocket (Cakile maritima) to the plants resistant to the shifting sands of the primary dune, highlighting the European Marram Grass (Amophyla arenaria), and the Cottonweed (Otanthus maritimus) to the most complex and diversified species to be found in the consolidated sands of the secondary dune with the curry plant (Helichrysum picardi), the Samphire-leaved Southernwood (Artemisia crithmifolia), the daffodil of the sands (Pancratium maritimum) and the maritime crosswort (Crucianella maritima), there is a great wealth of species. In stabilised dunes or tertiary dune, where trees were planted by the forest services at the start of the 20th century, the dune-pine forest transition is witnessed, where the characteristic “snake-like” marine pines (Pinus pinaster) are observed, shrubland (Corema album), globe candytuft (Iberis procumbens) and the Sageleaf rockrose (Cistus salvifolius), specific to the semi-natural Habitat 2270 “Dunes with Pinus pinea and/or Pinus pinaster forests”. Marine Environment and Cliffs On the sea board between the beach of São Pedro and Praia Velha, in the vicinity of the forest system, there is a magnificent variety of marine fauna and flora, typical of rocky beaches. Guia da Natureza . Nature’s Guide 34|35 Pollicipes pollicipes The vegetal communities to be found on the limestone cliffs of São Pedro de Moel are affected by the intensity of the wind and marine exposure, highlighting the endemisms, sea pinks (Armeria welwitschii), the Limonium (Limonium sp.) and also the rock samphire (Crithmum maritimum) and the catchfly (Silene sp.) which together define the natural Habitat 1240 “Cliffs with the vegetation of the Mediterranean coasts with endemic Limonium spp.”. The sea pinks (Armeria welwitschii) are easily observable alongside the Penedo da Saudade and they are associated with the legend of the Duchess of Caminha who is said to have collected bunches of this plant in a gesture of eternal longing for her spouse Miguel Luís de Menezes. Arribas de São Pedro de Moel Cliffs of São Pedro de Moel The plants invading the Portuguese coastline include the Highway Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis), forming extensive carpets of surface covering. In terms of the typical fauna of the intertidal region, worthy of special mention are the rocky substrata which emerge from the sea bed and which are situated in isolated strips amongst the sand - natural Habitat 1170 “Reefs” of the Habitats Directive. The reefs of São Pedro de Moel, situated between the beach and Penedo da Saudade, are rocky habitats exposed during low tide. With a great aesthetic and landscaping value, this habitat is a kind of “maternity ward” by ensuring spawning sites for many high sea species, whilst simultaneously becoming a refuge for the growth of many young fish. The animal communities of this habitat are very variable, highlighting the honeycomb worm which constructs sand tubes incrusted in the rocks, arranged in large colonies. Endowed with great maritime biodiversity, the coastal reefs enclose many groups of animals exclusive to these habitats, such as anemones, sponges and sea squirts. However, there are other animals which, although not exclusive to the reefs, do tend to occur here such as mussels (Mytilus edulis), barnacles (Pollicipes pollicipes), velvet crabs (Portunus puber), sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) and the octopus (Octopus vulgaris). With a long tradition in catching barnacles, for decades São Pedro de Moel has attracted many fishermen looking for the abundance of seafood in these areas who, during low tide, looked amongst the visible rock concavities for mussels, barnacles, limpets, periwinkles, prawns and velvet crabs. However, today, owing to the existing regulations and the lesser abundance of the species, the harvesting of small amounts of barnacles still survives, much appreciated in Iberian gastronomy. In the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean which wash into the beach of São Pedro de Moel there is a variety of fish typical to all of the Portuguese coast which has always attracted individual fishermen, underwater hunters and small fishing boats. During periods of weaker undulation you can still see today fishermen in vessels relatively close to the beach, searching for fish like the bream (Diplodus sargus), the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), the snook (Conger conger) and the catfish (Sparus aurata). As regards marine mammal communities, worthy of note are the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) present throughout the national coast and during periods of spring tides in the winter these magnificent animals are frequently hurled onto the beaches of the region of São Pedro de Moel. Pursuant to the POOC (Organisational Plan for the Sea Board) the cliffs of São Pedro de Moel are classified as a risk area owing to the enormous erosive effect to which they are subject, a consequence of the major direct impact of the wind and the waves of the sea, a factor which makes them, in conjunction with the dunes, vital habitats for the defence of the coastal population agglomerations from the direct action of the sea. Nature’s Guide 38|39 Fauna The abundance and diversity of the fauna are the most evident factors of the wealth and complexity of a given eco-system. Surprisingly, in a region where one forest species dominates, there is a reasonable wealth of fauna running counter to the reduced biodiversity characteristics of the majority of the pine forests. In open bushland conducive to the species in clearings which use the soil as an ecological niche, we can find the badger (Meles meles), the European polecat (Mustela putorius), the West European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), the mole (Talpa occidentalis) and the skunk (Mustela nivalis). Far from human life with furtive behaviour, in the region of São Pedro de Moel you can find various cinegetic species such as the fox (Vulpes vulpes), the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) and the Long-toed pigeon (Columba palumbus). As regards mammals, also worthy of note is the fauna belonging to the Order Chiroptera (bats) which has been showing an accentuated regression globally in recent years, it being the case that in the Valley of São Pedro de Moel six species were inventoried in the 1930’s and one species is currently registered, the Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrelus pipistrelus). By dint of its abundance and fearless behaviour, also worthy of note is the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). A regular visitor to the gardens and parks of São Pedro de Moel, the squirrel is currently to be found throughout the National Forest of Leiria area and on the urban perimeters of the district of Marinha Grande. In the other areas surrounding São Pedro de Moel other birds of prey are easy to detect: the little owl (Athene noctua) and the tawny owl (Strix aluco). Amongst many other species of birds present in the region also worthy of mention are the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), the great tit (Parus major), the carrion crow (Corvus corone), the Dartford warbler (Sylvia undata) and the colourful Eurasian bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula). In a perfect interaction with the trees of the pine forest various insectivorous birds are observed which are looking for food in the trunks, such as the wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea), the European robin (Erithacus rubecula), the great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopus major) and the green woodpecker (Picus viridis). São Pedro de Moel represents, rather than just a diversity and ostentation of nature, a special place where local people in conjunction with age-old trees, flowers and animals, live in a permanent equilibrium between the natural “whispering green” cathedral and the balsamic blue of the Atlantic Ocean. “Chego de Lisboa à praia e à floresta.
