O CÉU NO ANDAR DE BAIXO
Desde os 12 anos FRANCISCO faz registros fotográficos dos “Quandos” de sua vida. Os
“Quandos” de algo bom ou importante. Para ele, o céu é uma opção e um significado. Há um céu
para cada acontecimento, assim como há uma expressão nos rostos das pessoas para diferentes
ânimos. Bom, pelo o menos, é o que FRANCISCO pensa.
Since he was 12, FRANCISCO photographs the “Whens” of his life. The “Whens” of
something good or important. To him, the sky is both an option and a meaning. There„s a
sky for each event, as well as there‟s an expression on people‟s faces for different moods.
Well, at least, that‟s what FRANCISCO thinks.

Esta de quando FRANCISCO ganhou seu primeiro dinheiro, sem ajuda dos pais. Foram 5 reais
pra lavar o cão da DONA COTINHA, a vizinha.
This one is when FRANCISCO earned his first money without his parents‟ help. It was R$
5,00 to wash his neighbor‟s dog, Mrs COTINHA‟s.
Ah, esta foi quando FRANCISCO trocou seus soldados de plástico por uma Playboy bem velhinha.
Ah, this one was when FRANCISCO changed his plastic toy soldiers for one old Playboy.
Bom, esta foi no mesmo dia... FRANCISCO descobriu que tomar banho sozinho de porta fechada
podia ser a melhor hora do dia.

with the door closed could be the best moment of the day.
Esta foi quando os pais de FRANCISCO o deixaram ficar com o “PEREBA”, um vira-lata que
apareceu do nada. Um dia FRANCISCO estava parado, sentado na porta de casa, quando o cão
sentou ao seu lado. Naquele momento, parecia que eles se falaram em silêncio, e entre tantos
outros seres mais possíveis, eles se escolheram. PEREBA era um cão fiel, e não saía de perto de
FRANCISCO. Acho que não abandonaria FRANCISCO nem se lhe cortassem as quatro patas.
This one was when FRANCISCO‟s parents let him keep “PEREBA”, a mongrel dog that
came from nowhere. One day, FRANCISCO was still, sitting at the door of his house, when
the dog sat by his side. At that moment, it seemed that they talked in silence, and among so
many others, they‟ve chosen each other. PEREBA was a loyal dog and never let
FRANCISCO alone. I think he would not abandon FRANCISCO, not even if he had his four
paws cut.
Bom, este foi o “Quando” da primeira fotografia de FRANCISCO. Ele tinha 12 anos, era seu a
aniversário, e seu pai o presenteou com uma câmera fotográfica. Para FRANCISCO, foi o melhor
presente de toda a sua vida.
Well, this one was the “When” of FRANCISCO‟s first picture. He was 12, it was his birthday,
and his father gave him a camera. To FRANCISCO, it was the best present of his whole life.
A cabeça de FRANCISCO parece um pingente. Ele nasceu com uma rara doença que
descalcifica os ossos do pescoço e impede o crescimento de pêlos pelo corpo.

A vida inteira ele teve duas opções: Ver o mundo acima, o que lhe parecia melhor, mais bonito e
menos hostil. Contudo, logo aprendeu que não faria nada direito na vida se nem sabia onde

mundo, coisas que quase ninguém nota: restos, objetos esquecidos ou perdidos, lixo, coisas que
escorrem para os bueiros e as marcas que as pessoas deixam pelos caminhos...
The other option was seeing the world below, which allowed him to have a better control of

also could see the dirty things of the world, things that almost no one notices: rests,
forgotten or lost objects, garbage, things that fall into the manhole and the marks people

Aos 22 anos FRANCISCO saiu da casa de seus pais para morar em um apartamento alugado.
Para ele, uma grande conquista. Talvez o dia mais importante da sua vida até então...

Como de costume, FRANCISCO sai para fazer mais uma fotografia de céu.

Em suas fotografias de céu, FRANCISCO já havia visto todo tipo de coisas que voam, caem ou
planam: pássaros, aviões, balões de ar quente, papel picado, sacolas plásticas, pára-quedas e
algumas borboletas...

butterflies...

FRANCISCO passeia com PEREBA todos os dias. O cão gosta de comer ovo colorido no bar do
SEU TIÃO ao final de cada passeio.
FRANCISCO takes PEREBA for a walk everyday. The dog likes eating colored egg at Mr.
TIÃO‟s bar at the end of each walk.
Um dia, ao chegar de um desses passeios, FRANCISCO tem um reencontro surpreendente.

One day, when arriving from one of these walks, FRANCISCO has a surprise meeting.
FRANCISCO é sempre convidado a participar das reuniões de confraternização dos condôminos
aos sábados na casa do Seu JEVÁSIO.
FRANCISCO is always invited to participate in his building unit owners‟ celebration, on
Saturdays, at Mr. JEVÁSIO‟.
Mas FRANCISCO é um excluído por opção própria. Com o tempo, as pessoas do condomínio
aprenderam que ele não é uma figura amistosa.
But FRANCISCO is an outcast by choice. As time goes by, the people of the condominium
learned that he‟s not a friendly person.
FRANCISCO não entendia o por que, eles insistiam em contar com sua presença naquela
agremiação estúpida, já que ele não fazia o menor esforço para cair no agrado daquela gente.
FRANCISCO didn‟t understand the reason why they insisted in counting on his presence in
that stupid meeting, since he didn‟t do the slight effort to please that people.
Mas um dia resolveu aceitar o convite, para saber por que era bem vindo, apesar de não querer
ser bem vindo. Descobriu que as pessoas, que freqüentam esta reunião semanal, querem apenas
falar. Não confundir com conversar ou confraternizar. A confraternização anda muito distraída por
aqui. Elas querem apenas falar. E como falam!
But one day, he decided to accept the invitation in order to know the reason he was
welcome, even though he didn‟t want to. He found out that the people, who attend to that
weekly meeting, just want to speak. Do not confuse it with talking or meeting. The meeting
seems too distracted by. They just want to speak. And they speak!
Devido ao seu comportamento incomum de poucas palavras, melhor dizendo, de nenhuma
palavra, os vizinhos acham que FRANCISCO é mudo. Mas FRANCISCO apenas gosta demais do
seu silêncio para quebrá-lo com qualquer um. Aqui, FRANCISCO é valor agregado, está presente
estritamente como ouvinte passivo. Silencioso, mas presente.
Due to his uncommon behavior of few words, that is, none word, the neighbors think that
FRANCISCO is dumb. But FRANCISCO just likes his silence so much to break it with

claros para isso, nem saberia o que dizer a ela. Acabou voltando para o seu apartamento.

FRANCISCO sentou-se no banco ao lado de seu amigo, o PÉ DE MANGA-ESPADA, mas não
disse uma palavra.
FRANCISCO sat down at the seat beside his friend, MANGO TREE, but said no word.

FRANCISCO pergunta ao PÉ DE MANGA-ESPADA se foi ele que inventou essa história de árvore
e amor.

O PÉ DE MANGA-ESPADA disse que foi obra de um poeta que passou por ali recentemente.
Aproveitou-se da sombra de suas folhas, sentou-se no banco, e escreveu algo mais ou menos
assim.

Ao chegar a casa, FRANCISCO preparou um envelope e foi à casa da GAROTA DAS MEIAS
LISTRADAS para entregá-lo. Não teve coragem, resolveu então empurrá-lo por debaixo da porta e
esperar que ela o encontrasse.
When getting home, FRANCISCO prepared an envelope and went to the house of the girl
with striped socks to deliver it. He wasn‟t brave enough. Thus, he decided to push it under
the door and wait for her to find it.

Um: um bilhete convidando a moça para um encontro, que seria no banco da praça, debaixo de
um Pé de Manga-Espada. O bilhete foi escrito sobre uma cópia da fotografia do dia que
FRANCISCO se mudou para o apartamento.
One: a note inviting the lady for a date, which would be at the bench of the square, under
the Mango tree. The note was written on one copy of the picture of the day when Franciso
moved to the apartment.
Dois: um mapa de localização do ponto de encontro, com instruções e pontos de referência para
que ela não se perdesse e para que fizesse um caminho mais confortável com a sua cadeira de
rodas.
Two: a map of the place of the date, with instructions and reference points so that she
wouldn‟t get lost and would go through a more comfortable way in her wheelchair.
Três: um exemplar da folha do pé de Manga-Espada para que ela não se engane de árvore.

FRANCISCO chega ao local combinado, mas encontra seu amigo, o pé de manga espada,
cortado. Era uma árvore velha, já com poucas folhas, mas talvez não precisassem tê-la matado.

debaixo de um Pé de Manga-Espada, se já não havia um Pé de Manga-Espada naquele local?

FRANCISCO gets to the right place, but he finds his friend, MANGO TREE, cut. It was an old
tree, with just a few leaves, but maybe they wouldn‟t need to kill it. Anyway, Franciso now
thinks about only one thing: how would the lady find the bench under the Mango Tree if
there isn‟t a Mango Tree anymore at that place?
FRANCISCO então pensou no que a velha árvore havia dito sobre o amor. Pensou sobre as
raízes, a zona obscura do amor. Pensou que talvez todo o amor seria, um dia, cortado, e só
restariam as raízes, lá em baixo, sepultadas em algum buraco de quem amou. E que o melhor
seria sair dali rápido, pois, talvez, daria tempo de chegar ao bar do SEU TIÃO para dar de comer
ao PEREBA.
FRANCISCO, then, thought about what the old tree has told him about love. He thought
about the roots, the obscure zone of love. He thought that maybe all the love would be, one
day, cut, and only the roots would remain underground, buried in a hole of whom has
loved... And the best thing to do would be leave that place quickly, because, maybe, he
would have time to get at Mr. Tião‟s bar to feed PEREBA.
