Preparatory 4 field trip to Brotas 14th – 17th September
Departure Monday 14th at 7.30 am
Dear Parents,
During week 8 of this first term, Prep 4 pupils will be going on a field trip to Brotas as part
of their curriculum enhancement linked to the Mission to Mars and Existing, Endangered,
Extinct topics. Brotas is a small town 280km from São Paulo. The pupils will be staying at
the Fazenda Estância Peraltas, which is a camp for children. Accommodation will be in
dormitories with 8-10 pupils and one monitor per room. Peraltas has a wonderful
infrastructure including five swimming pools, three water slides, sports courts, football
fields, beach volley courts, games rooms, a covered gym, tennis courts, a mechanical bull,
trampoline, climbing wall, and a place to play soapy football.
Although the main purpose of the field trip is academic, we also hope that the children bond
with their teachers and make some new friends in their year group. The pupils will be
visiting the following places:



The "Centro de Estudo do Universo", a highly sophisticated astronomy site made
up of an observatory, a planetarium and auditorium. The planetarium is digitally
equipped. Their telescope is the strongest telescope in Brazil open to the public
and if the nights are clear they will see the rings around Saturn. They will also
observe the launching of a rocket.
The Jacaré Pepira river, which they will be able to float down on rubber boats.
(There are no rapids on this stretch of the river).
A river with a waterfall, as well as a canopy walk, to learn more about the local
flora and fauna, which will support their learning during the Existing,
Endangered, Extinct topic.
The pupils will be accompanied by Mr Hill, Mrs. Bishop, Mr. Davy, Miss Barnes, Miss Beer,
Miss Belletati, Mrs Lima, Miss Bustorff, and Mrs Barbosa. There will be an additional 8
specialised monitors at the Camp who will accompany the pupils at all times.
At the end of this letter you will find a list of items and clothing we suggest your child will
need for the trip. Each pupil should carry one bag only and a back-pack.

If your child has to take any medication, please name it clearly and send specific
instructions together with a copy of the prescription. It should be sent in to your child’s
tutor by Friday, 11th September. The camp has first aid material and will check school
medical records, which will be taken to Brotas, before giving a child any medication.
Your child may want to take some money to buy extra drinks, ice-creams, etc. at the small
shop which also sells ‘Brotas’ t-shirts and caps. Please do not send too much money, R$
30,00 to R$ 50,00 should suffice.
Pupils are not permitted to take mobile phones. I shall be in contact with the teachers and
will email parents when the children arrive in Brotas and send you a report each day. You
should be able to see photos of the camp on the Peraltas site: www.peraltas.com.br
Pupils should arrive at school on Monday 14th September between 7.00 – 7.15 am for a
7.30 am departure. They should wear casual clothes and bring a snack and drink for the
bus. They should leave their luggage outside the school gates and then go down to the
covered area to register with their teachers. The trip will depart punctually at 7.30 am and
it will not be possible to wait for late arrivals.
They will depart from Brotas after lunch on Thursday, 17th September and should be
arriving here at school by 17:00. Please note that pupils are expected to attend school as
normal on Friday.
The permission slip should be returned to the Tutor by Wednesday 2nd September.
There will be a short meeting for parents about this trip on Tuesday 1st September from
8:30 am to 9:00 am, in the Theatre Foyer to clear any doubts or queries you may have.
Yours sincerely,
Siobhain Allum
