Eu estava sentado no espaço. “...I was sitting in the space. I realized the light, the sunlight was not enough to create works. I mean, sure, light was enough, but not daylight. And I needed light. Outside, it was intense, the color became a taste I have almost never seen. Could it also be, that the missing advertising in this town changed the way how I looked around? No. No way. Green was more than green. Blue was deep blue. And the air was full of dust, intense too. And why the hell the big window to the road was hidden, hidden with a wooden construction? Of course I knew why, but, in this minute I did not understand anything. Dentro do espaço eu perdia essas impressões – essa intensidade. A partir deste momento, eu deixei sempre a porta aberta. Claro. But inside, inside the space I missed those impressions – this intensity. And I also need some of those aspects to create my sculptures inside. From this moment on, I let the door always open. I placed the bench in the middle of the entrance – and from then on this was my working area. Each layer of glass, I placed there on - and unexpectedly the colored layer in between dried so fast as it has never before. I was impressed and touched. Because only intense daylight can put this process of hardening in progress – even in some minutes. Beside this potential – I still didn’t have a close idea of what it will be – I mean, how this work will grow – where the process is going to. The fact that untill then each little step took me hours, did not bring me the trust I needed. But I stayed calm. Or I tried to stay calm. I still had this feeling in me, this body thing - unexpectedly strong - totally in balance. I never thought about it: why in such moments, something can be so stable? I mean, so much standing on both legs (I feel myself totally in reverse). It was new for me, and I still tried to be calm. Of course. Sorte minha. In the coming minutes I sat down. I opened a beer, Stella beer, always Stella beer. Always looking to this bottle – this touching name – this friendship story – Hana beer, Stella beer, wow, and I totally lost myself, lucky me”. When Manuel Burgener arrived, the first impression that he had of KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, was that the space was too small. He was impressed how the space seem much larger in photographs. This also happened because the space have these two levels, which end up making the background something that resembles a stage. He has no clue how much this space has changed in the last three years! E então, nesse momento, o Manuel me propôs uma mudança radical. Como diz o provérbio gaúcho: I also had just returned from trip and I was feeling that something had to change... There were still many remnants from the period in which KUNSTHALLE São Paulo has opened with the idea of being a more independent and alternative space, that it has eventually become today. At that time, there was a cafe with lots of furniture and much visual noise, which has being cleaned over the years with the help of artists. Finally one day, the cafe was completely deactivated, and the space was renovated, eliminating the counter that already existed in space, changing the floor finishing with a water resistant paint. But there were still many books, because initially, there was a mini book shop with national labels, fanzines and some imported books. Coincidentally, just before the arrival of Burgener, many of these books were returned to the publishers, and only some imported fanzines, books of artists who have exhibited in space and editions published by KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, remained on display. The black armchairs and table chairs were also remaining, which were very comfortable, but too disturbing to space. And especially, the toilets’ hallway was filled with left over materials from previous exhibitions. Moreover, in wooden boxes, there were also numerous folders with documentation of past project, which were no longer essential. And then, at that point, Manuel Burgener has proposed me a radical change. A saddled horse does not pass twice”. I was in! It was this energy that the KUNSTHALLE São Paulo needed in that moment. Burgener is a super craftsman: he has built himself all his studio in Burgdorf. The only thing I had to do was buy a circular saw, and he, using all the wood that was in the hallway, has built up, in one afternoon, all the shelves and niches for the office. He has also painted in white all the details that were still in black. Realmente. Really. On the trip I had seen some galleries which were very clean: they had sometimes only a wooden table, two chairs and a internet modem. The rest was all exhibition space. And I have found that all very beautiful. Of course this is not possible, one can not be this radical, as some stuff is necessary to the shows’ set up: paint, brushes, driller, etc. But now everything is super organized. Marina Coelho is an exchange, and that a mutual effort is sometimes necessary for a development like this one. They are not only expecting to receive, but they are very generous, and really work hard. And I am super grateful for this gift that Manuel Burgener gave to KUNSTHALLE São Paulo. All this, was very important for him to relate to the space. In this way, he managed to integrate the lower level to the rest of the space, transforming everything in exhibition area. And after this process, some of the qualities of space – which initially disturbed him, such as the presence of the ramp at the entrance, the yellowish air conditioning, and the floor itself, which already calls for a new painting – started to make sense for him, as they are responsible for granting a certain uniqueness to the space. Exhibition from 22 May through 20 June 2015. Interested in understanding the qualities of materials, such as glass, wood, or found objects, Swiss artist Manuel Burgener (*Bern, 1978) creates works that employ those materials as they are, and not only as elements for the building of other structures. Always using “warm” materials – the ones that either have once been living beings, such as wood, or that have been heated up and transformed, like glass – he creates art works which are not sculptures, but that are the materials themselves, performing their own qualities. A cut glass is never polished, a chair is showed as a chair, and even the dust coming from the room is showed as it is. Transferindo a mesma ideia para o espaço expositivo, Manuel Burgener cria instalações que se conectam ao espaço em que são exibidas, mas sem comentá- Transferring the same idea to the exhibition space, Manuel Burgener creates installations that connect to the space in which they are exhibited, but without commenting on it. For the exhibition at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, his first solo show in Brazil, he has created ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 3/15 | 9 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Vista da exposição / Exhibition view la. Burgener proposes a very poetic exhibition, in which time and presence are the keys for scrutinizing the works and the relations existing among them. By moving around the room and spending some time with all the elements, one starts to connect to their qualities, reaching the point in which the materials are understood as entities, possessing their own presence. For the artist, the only way one can understand things around himself, is through taste, through the very personal experience that requires presence and time, and varies from one person to the other: a soup tastes differently for each person trying it, just like colors are perceived and felt in different ways by each viewer. Two of them – which lay in the main exhibition area – have their glass structure colored in yellow and green, and the lightened neon lamp standing on top of the chair. These two pieces allude to the presence of two living bodies in a dialog, whose colorful auras glow from their inner parts. The third piece, which stands alone from a distance, is not colored and not lightened, suggesting a body, that does not take part of the dialog yet, but has its inner potentiality to become also a glowing colorful being. Removendo a maior parte do mobiliário do espaço e renovando as instalações na área do escritório, Burgener integrou as diferentes áreas do espaço, ampliando a área expositiva. Also very important for the show, were the first days in which the artist worked on the space itself, in order to connect to it. Proposing an adaptation, in which he removed most of the furniture from the space and renovated the installations in the office area, Burgener was able to integrate the different areas of the space, thus amplifying the exhibition area.
