Professor Moosawi is one of the best known Iranian experts on the Islamic mystical tradition. His lectures presented Islam’s profound and respectful regard for the Great Prophet, Jesus Christ, and his dear mother, Holy Mary. An indescribable respect for them is present in the heart of all the Iranian people. Iranian civilization has been deeply enriched by Muslim religion. In such a way that we, the Iranian people, have a profound respect for the Prophet Muhammad as well as for all prophets, such as Moses and Jesus Christ. I thank God for the opportunity to hold these lectures and hope that the close collaboration developed between the Catholic University of Portugal and the Iranian Embassy, and Professor Moosawi’s important lectures may be the beginning of a closer cooperation between the followers of the divine religions, Islam and Christianity. I hope that, someday, we may see the affectionate bonding of believers, based on the Unity of God and equality of the Prophets, the end of conflict between believers and that all societies may be tolerant and generous to others. My gratitude goes out to the friendly Portuguese people for their hospitality and for having hosted these lectures and I present my best wishes to the people of Portugal. I also Jesus Christ in mystical Islam In the Name of the One God 7 thank the Catholic University of Portugal and especially the vice-rector Professor Peter Stilwell, for having invited Professor Moosawi and for their valuable collaboration in establishing an open forum for the exchange of ideas. Finally, I thank my dear wife for the English translation of the lectures and Madame Radfar, the Embassy’s translator, for the translation of the lectures in this book from Persian to Portuguese. Professor Moosawi’s promptness in accepting the invitation extended to him, and His presence in Lisbon, were a great occasion for all of us. My deepest thanks and my best wishes of health and happiness to Professor Moosawi. May God bless our dear Professor for his teachings on Islamic mysticism. AliReza Moosawi Seyed Rasool Mohajer 8 Preface 1. A Eurocentric perspective means many westerners are unaware of the admiration in which Jesus Christ is held by other religious traditions. This is not merely a side-effect of Christian missions in the period of European expansion but, in some cases, goes back to the first millennium and the profound cultural and spiritual influence of eastern branches of Christianity in the context of other civilizations. In Islam, in particular, respect for Jesus is rooted in the Qu’ran itself, and has developed in distinct fashions in the Sunni and Shiite traditions. 2. With the aim of deepening mutual understanding of this and other points of contact between two great world religions, in April 2010 the Faculty of Theology hosted a seminar for Shiite Iranian and Portuguese Catholic researchers. The initiative, considered by all to have been a success, was made possible thanks to the enthusiasm and support of the Iranian Ambassador to Portugal, Rasool Mohajer. 3. After the seminar, Prof. AliReza Moosawi gave a series of lectures, open to the general public, on Jesus in the writings of the Muslim mystical poets Rumi and Hafez1. It is the content of these lectures, together with his talk during the two day seminar, which we have now been able to published, thanks once again to the support of the Iranian - ad-D-ın Muhammad Rum - -ı (1207-1273) e Khwaja - Šamsu d-D-ın Jalal . - -ı (1325/26–1389/90). The interest they attracted at the time suggests they will not lack readers, despite their formal limitations.2 The fact that Prof. Moosawi would pause every few minutes for the translation, meant that repetitions occur in the recording, as he picked up the thread from where he left off, or clarified doubts raised in translating his thought. Some of these repetitions and one or other deviation have been edited out. An attempt has also been made to bring meaning from the context to sentences which had become unintelligible to the reader in this complex process of transmission. Whether, after all that, we succeeded in capturing something of the pleasure and spiritual enlightenment of Prof. Moosawi’s lectures must be left to the reader to decide. 10 4. On returning to Iran, Prof. Moosawi kindly shared with me, in English, his own impressions. They are a fitting introduction to his lectures. “The two day seminar entitled ‘Dialogue between Islam and Christianity’ followed by the seven day session, elaborated and highlighted the closeness of both Christians and Muslims. […] “Talking about the mysteries of Jesus surprised both our Iranian and Portuguese friends. Iranians in the audience became familiar with the shiny [sic] facts about Jesus Christ, and closer to him as well as to Christians. Our friends in Portugal found themselves closer to Muslims too. Iranians who were present realized that Christians have a strong belief in monotheism. Our Portuguese friends saw that there is a lot of common knowledge between these two divine religions. […] I am sure that by publicizing such ideas, the friendship and brotherhood between these two large and very important divine religions will come to flourish as much as possible.
