Heavy Portuguese influence in Guinea Bissau team to face Kenya
Guinea Bissau, Kenya’s hosts and opponents this coming weekend has assembled many first timers most
of whom are based in different clubs with their colonial masters Portugal. Most of the players in the
squad of 21 called up have dual passports.
At least 11 of the named players are or have been part of Portugal U19 or U21 squads. Beyond those
named two of their key players play in France; Bucundji Cá (Tours) and Pape Basse (Rennes).
José Monteiro Macedo of Hammarby in Sweden, Bruno Fernandes who turns out for Urinea Urziceni in
Romania, Basile de Carvalho of Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Bulgaria, former Portugal U21 player Ednilson
currently with Dinamo Tblissi in Georgia, Almani Moreira in Serbia’s top team Partizan and Chelsea
reserve team player Aliu “Kaby” Djalo are part of the squad.
Guinea Bissau last played an international game back in December 2007 and has never made it to the
Africa Cup of Nations.
