On 16 April 1987 a pod of over 240 mclan-headed whales, Pepo/loce pilala
eleclra (Gray, 1846), stranded an Piraeanga Deach, Dahia, northeaslern
Drazil (14°14'S, 39°00'W). A 10lal of 182 whales were examined 8 days afler
the stranding per;od had starled. Dala on body length and/or sex ml;o from
123 specimens were collecled. The graup of animaIs examined included 81
females and 44 males; 57 individuais could not be sexed due 10 decomposilion and damage caused by vullure fceding.

INTRODucnON
On 16 April19H7 a group of mclon-headcd whalcs, Pepollocep/w/a eleclra, was
obscrvcd slranding on Piracanga Bcach (14°14'S, 39°00'W), Itacaré County,
approximalcly 423 km soulh of Salvador, Slalc of Bahia, Brazil. Bccausc of the
rcmolcncss of thc stranding sitc, ncws of thc cvcnt took several days to reach
lhc aulhors. Allhough mclon-hcadcd whalcs have a world-widc dislribulion in
lropical and subtropical scas (Lcalhcrwood and Rccvcs, 1983), wc hcrc rcporl
on Ihc firsl known maSs slranding of Ihc mclon-headed whale, for lhe Atlanlic
Occan. This spceies has only rcccntly bccn rccordcd for lhe Brazilian coasl,
bascd on a skull collcctcd ai Caravclas, soulhcrn Bahia, in July 1985 (Siciliano,
Fiori, Lodi and Borobia, 1987).

animais (n = 123) and arc shown in Fig. 4, Frcqucney distribution for both scxcs
indicalc that a wide mnge of size classcs were involuved in the stmnding. The
longesl animal, a femalc, was 275 cm, and lhe shortcst, also a fcmale, 106 em;
21.4% of lhc malcs and 21.1)% of lhc fcmales were belween 221 and 230 cm
long, The longest and lhc shorlesl malcs were 261 and 110 cm long, rcspeetively. Females in lhe PaciCic Oeean huvc been reported 10 reach sexual
malurily aI somewhere belween 225 and 257 cm (Bryden el aI., 11)77), and
males bctwecn 2411(l3est anu' Shaughnessy, 1981) and 268 em (Bryden el 111..

Muss strandings of mclon-heaucu whalcs huve becn rcporlcu to involvc
from 53 to 250 individuais (Table I), Sightings (van Brce anu Cuuenut, 19611;
Dawbin, Hoble and Fraser, 1970; Bryden el aI., 1977; Miyazaki und Wuda. 11)7!!;
Pilleri, 1982) and observalions in conjunction with C11ptures (Nishiwuki and
Norris, 1966) show that P, eleClrl/ is highly gregariolls anu occllr~ in large
groups.
