Dia Internacional da Mistura By / Por Paul & Antoinette Combs On November 10th a sea of purple came through the entry way of our school. Instead of the normal blue and white apparel worn by our young ISC patrons our elementary school students, teachers and staff dressed in the royal color of purple in support of creating a more inclusive school community. This was our first International Mix-It-Up-AtLunch Day at ISC and it was successfully organized and implemented by our fifth grade students and teachers. The day was an outgrowth of the study of tolerance during International Peace Week last September and was therefore dedicated to breaking down the barriers that are sometimes present between students. While ISC students typically are very cordial and nurturing with one another, there is always room to improve intergroup relations so fewer misunderstandings and social conflicts occur. The event was a simple call to action: take a new seat in the cafeteria. By making this move, our elementary students crossed the invisible lines of school division, met new people and hopefully made some new friends. Assim nossos alunos do Elementary cruzaram as linhas invisíveis que dividem a escola, conheceram pessoas novas e continua na página 2 Cooking Classes at ECC 07 Aulas de Culinária no ECC ECC Project Presentations 08 Apresentação de Projetos do ECC ECC Children Have Fun 09 As Crianças do ECC Making Pancakes in the esl Class 10 Fazendo Panquecas na Aula de ESL 1st Grade - Community Helpers 11 1o Ano - Ajudantes da Comunidade International Peace Day 11 Dia Internacional da Paz Chess Club 12 Clube de Xadrez 5th Grade Native Americans Museum 14 Exposição sobre Índios Measuring Mass - 5th and 8th 16 Integração da 5a e 8a séries Culture Exchange Celebration 17 Projeto “Culture Exchange” Global Young Leaders Conference 18 Conferência de Jovens Líderes ISC One Step Higher on the Podium 20 Taciana e ISC Sobem ao Pódio issl Season I Results 22 Resultados da 1a Temporada Classroom Without Walls (CWW) 25 “Classroom Without Walls” Going “Caiçara” on the Coast 26 Virando Caiçara no Litoral 11th Grade Reflections 27 Testemunhos dos Alunos - 11a série 7th Grade CWW – Guartelá Canyon 28 CWW da 7a série – Guartelá Open Letter to ISC 30 Carta Aberta para o ISC 12th Grade Trip to Ilha Rasa 31 12a série - Viagem para Ilha Rasa PUBLISHED BY DECEMBER/2009 WINDOW TO ISC – Volume 6, Issue 1 Responsible: Communications Office of the International School of Curitiba – Santa Felicidade Campus: Av. Continued 2008-2009 1st Quarter students in becoming more comfortable interacting with different people, particularly across gender barriers. Fifth graders made posters and signs to explain to the other elementary students about the goals of this special day. High Honor Roll At lunch, all elementary students sat at tables based on a number they chose out of a hat, thus enabling students to sit with people besides the friends they normally sit with. Imagine the excitement students had whenever they drew a table number out of a paper sack. Students enthusiastically announced, “I am a 14”! Or, “I am a 7”! And, “Oh boy, I am at table 12, so what number did you get?” They then quickly prepared their plates with food so they could learn who they were going to sit with. At nearly every table there were students and staff who did not know each other. Mix-It-Up Day promoted diversity and tolerance. So did wearing purple! Lovers of the color purple appreciate that we should all honor our differences and cherish our similarities no matter our race, the color of one’s skin, or one’s religion. “Purple People” spread love and light wherever they travel. A “purple person” loves all of the universe’s creations. Purple people are dedicated to spreading love and peace throughout the universe through the promotion of equality among all humans and respect for all living creatures. Purple People know that wherever they travel, they always carry their most prized possession, their smile. Students wore purple on Mix-It-Up Day to symbolize that skin color, in particular, does not determine our value, for on the inside we are all the same. Mix-It-Up Day was a huge success and congratulations are extended to the fifth grader students and teachers for organizing such a terrific event. We all look forward to making International Mix-It-Up Day an annual event at ISC. Amam todas as criaturas e criações do Universo. 2 Window to ISC Sofia Buzeti 6A Arthur Lopes Francesca Cornero 7B Carolina Sarturi Feijó 8A 7B Honor Roll Students Diana Franco 6A Daniel Ferreira 8A Vitória Gaboardi 8A Lieh Vertuoso 9A Meghan Andrzejewski 9A Taciana Pereira 9A Ana Beatriz Ferreira 10A Georgina Franco 10A Gabriela Gugelmin 11A Julia Wuestefeld 11A Window to ISC 3 The Importance of our Deaf School Campaign A Importância da Campanha para a Escola de Surdos By / Por Susan Silvestre For the past 7 years the ECC students have been doing a campaign to help the Deaf School Alcindo Fanaya Junior. The donations for the school consists of school material, used but fairly new toys, clothes, chocolate milk for snack and also donations which are given to the students for Children´s Day, such as toys and yummy goodies. Alcindo Fanaya Junior School serves mainly deaf children in early childhood and middle/high school education. There are currently 250 students enrolled. The students who attend the school are deaf, deaf-blind, children with different syndromes and some who are deaf with neurological disorders or physically handicapped. The teachers who work there have a degree in teaching, a masters degree and are proficient in sign language. In 2007, a group of 12 directors from England who work in inclusion schools came to exchange experiences. In 2008, Jean Foucambert, a renowned teacher from the National Institute of Pedagogic Research and founder of the French Association of Literature, came to learn what literacy methodology they use at the Deaf School. There are students from Curitiba, the metropolitan area of Curitiba, other states in Brazil and even from different countries such as Italy, Japan, Venezuela and the US. Sign language is used among the deaf community in Brazil and has its own linguistic structures, just like any other language around the world. Each country has its own sign language. The Brazilian sign language is therefore completely different to that in Portugal. That´s why we say that a person is bilingual if they know Portuguese and sign language. In the past, the tendency in regular and deaf schools was to force deaf students to speak, that is, make them learn how to speak and to lip read. This concept began to change in the early 90´s, when they came to the conclusion that not all the deaf students had the capability of speaking and so sign language was allowed to be used. The State Secretary of Education of Paraná recruited sign language translators/interpreters to help deaf students in regular schools as well as universities. 4 have to use their hands to communicate and sing. They find it very amusing to learn the Sign Language. On the day that the ECC kindergarten students go to the Deaf School they present the songs. The deaf children also present a song to our students. All of the gifts are spread around on a stage and the different grade levels are called one by one to choose their presents. When all of the students have picked their present we all go down to the lunch room where we have a snack together and then all go outside to play. It is a moment of sharing and caring and is the most precious lesson to learn that will last a lifetime. This year, due to the H1N1 virus, we did not take the Kindergarten students to the Deaf School. But we did the campaign and, instead of the students going to school, the students recorded a song in sign language. Ms. Mari and Ms. Susan took the donations to the deaf school and the students there watched the video of the Kinder students doing their song in sign language. They loved the Children’s Day presents and the school’s director, Nirce, thanks all the parents for the donations. It has helped the teachers and students in their daily routines. At the ECC, the Kindergarten students learn about the importance of caring for others and the campaign and visit to the Deaf School provides a great opportunity for them to learn and experience this. As soon as the donations are received at our school, the Kindergarten students wrap them individually. They also make small cards to go with the gifts. A week before their visit to the school, Ms. Susan teaches them one or two songs in sign language to present to the deaf students. Through this the students learn that those children cannot hear them so then they A Secretaria de Educação do Estado do Paraná fez a contratação de tradutores/intérpretes de Libras para atender os surdos nas escolas especiais e também nas universidades. October was a month of “scary” happenings at ISC! Cooking Classes at ECC Outubro foi um mês “assustador” no ISC! Aulas de Culinária no Centro de Educação Infantil By / Por Marilene Nascimento The artistry of cooking has fascinated mankind for centuries. Chefs and pâtissiers around the world explore and experiment with textures, scents, and flavors, bringing constant innovation to their menus. Although not quite as experienced and with the expertise of Le Cordon Bleu, Julia Child, or Chef Gusteau, our youngest students take periodical endeavors in the art of cooking. And they love it! Pictured to the above left are students in Ms. Wieland’s 2nd grade class as they presented the The Little Old Lady That Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams, to the ISC staff in the reception. Na foto acima do lado esquerdo, alunos da turma de 2o ano da Professora Wieland enquanto apresentavam The Little Old Lady That Was Not Afraid of Anything, de Linda Williams, aos funcionários do ISC na recepção. Pictured to the above right: Ms. Cory Kennedy’s 3 rd grade students practiced their reading skills as they read scary stories they had written to other elementary students. Cooking classes are one of the hands-on subjects at the Early Childhood Center. Once a month the students head to cooking class, and I dare say that we have a 100% rate of enthusiasm and excitement among the students when they enter the room, ready to find out what their recipe will be. Those students, who really enjoy cooking, can take extra-credits and enroll in afterschool cooking classes every Friday. Fruit, dairy, and vegetables are a substantial part of the ingredients of our recipes, and the children are taught to appreciate these foods as important for their health and growth. But they also use flour, sugar… sometimes chocolate. And they know the importance of using baking powder! They use plastic knifes to learn how to cut a banana, and they learn that in order to make a smooth batter with carrots, eggs, and oil they must use a blender. Our recipes are simple, as they need to be for an early childhood student to follow; nutritious, as we know what young bodies need in terms of nutrients; and last but not least, delicious – for that is the reason why we cook! E eles adoram! ECC students got in on some Halloween fun with a party at school organized by the PTA. Window to ISC 7 ECC Project Presentations APRESENTAÇÃO DE PROJETOS DO ECC ECC children have fun playing with water As crianças da Educação Infantil se divertem brincando com água Since the beginning of the first quarter of this school year, the ECC students have been learning about the different kinds of houses, their school, hygiene, body parts, and about their families and friends. During this second quarter, they learned about ecology, and are getting ready to show their parents and relatives the activities and projects they did, and the songs they learned about seasons, parts of the plants, how seeds grow and garbage separation. Throughout the semester, the students from all grade levels have been taking turns presenting a little play and singing songs to their classmates about the themes studied in each classroom. They have been sharing their experiences and getting used to going on stage for little performances. As a closure to all of their hard work, during the week of November 16 th to 19 th, they performed for their parents and friends, and showed them the displays around the school. ECC children greeted the beginning of the warm weather with a great hose shower. On Friday, Nov. 6 th, they brought their swim suits, towels, caps and lotion to school for a day full of water games and fun. Because it was really hot, they were able to wear their summer clothes all day long, for class activities, lunch, music class and library. There were two plastic pools and a toboggan, which the teachers added shampoo to, making it even more slippery. The children could slide really fast and far! We hope the weather remains warm so that we can enjoy more days of fun like this one. As crianças puderam escorregar bem rápido e longe! 8 Window to ISC Window to ISC 9 MAKING PANCAKES IN THE ESL CLASS International Peace Day Fazendo panquecas na aula de ESL By / Por Yara Araújo Students acquire English most quickly and easily when they use it for meaningful communication. ESL students are motivated to produce language and use the vocabulary and structures they need when classes are based on purposeful and communicative activities. In this way, students incorporate language patterns and structures as well as everyday and content-area vocabulary into their listening/reading and speaking/ writing skills in natural chunks. Pronunciation and fluency also develop naturally as students use language for purposeful activities. Second Grade ESL students have been learning about TOOLS this quarter. They have been sorting TOOLS into different categories, such as: Gardening Tools, Building Tools, Cleaning Tools, School Tools, and Cooking Tools. On our third lesson we had a poster called “Making Pancakes”, with a picture of a girl making pancakes on it. The objective of the lesson was to teach the following concepts, vocabulary and structures: 1. Cooking Tools: bowl, spoon, etc 2. Order Words: first, then, next, finally Os alunos de ESL do 2o ano têm estudado durante esse bimestre o tema UTENSÍLIOS. Comida: leite, ovos, manteiga, panqueca After reciting the poem several times in order to build vocabulary we made a list of the ingredients and the cooking tools we would need to make pancakes. Each student was responsible for bringing in some ingredients and cooking tools. During the “cooking class” they all had a chance to participate and cook. One student poured the milk, the other one mixed the batter and so on. This “real cooking experience” provided them with a great opportunity to use language for authentic purposes, motivating language production and facilitating the internalization of vocabulary as well as language patterns and structures. And of course cooking together was fun and our pancakes were DELICIOUS!!! On the next day, they worked on a poster that included pictures of them cooking and eating pancakes, as well as the lists of ingredients, and cooking tools and also the instructions on how to make pancakes. It was a fun and meaningful class that provided the ESL students with an opportunity to learn authentic language as well as to have a hands-on experience, catering to learners with different styles. Window to ISC 4. September 21 Dia Internacional da Paz 21 de setembro 1st Grade Community Helpers 1 Ano – Ajudantes da Comunidade o During the first semester as part of their Social Studies and Language Arts curriculum, Grade 1 students were engaged in a unit about Community Helpers. Their studies include learning about the different helpers who are a part of their community and what they do. This year, each student chose a specific community helper to read and write about. As a final, culminating activity for this unit, the children dressed up as their community helpers and gave presentations to the other students in 1st grade. International Peace Day provided a great opportunity to teach ISC elementary about peace and how each and everyone can help create peace in this world. During the week leading up to Peace Day, the students focused on learning about: • Friendship • Respect • Unity • Empathy • Tolerance On Peace Day, all students and staff were encouraged to wear white, the official color of peace, to school. A Peace Day Assembly was held with each grade presenting through song or skit, what the words listed above meant to them. The program ended with all the children joining in singing Heal the World followed by a moment of silence. Window to ISC 11 Chess Club Clube de Xadrez By / Por Andrew Wisley Growth and dedication makes our activities program successful. Starting with the seemingly tireless coordinating energies of Ms. Leiser guiding the program, then moving onto the dedicated professionals who supervise the activities and finally ending up with the most important component, our ISC Wildcats who sharpen their skills and reach new heights, our activities program soars! In this article I would like to share with you how the Chess Club has improved its skills, expanded its ranks and took great initiative in creating the first ever ISC individual and doubles chess tournament. At the start of the activities program last school year, between five to seven Wildcats met regularly during Wednesday lunch recesses to strengthen (and for some to begin) their understanding of chess and chess strategies. Within two weeks, the club had doubled in membership and wanted to organize a tournament. After some really good marketing, the club quadrupled and decided to meet two times a week. Next they planned, created and participated in the first ever ISC chess championship. At the close of the activities in June 2009, the group consisted of 12 to 21 participants, most of whom are dangerously good chess players. The group grew tremendously in their abilities as the chess players improved valuable, critical thinking skills. This year the Chess Club participants have the goal to raise funds for the purchase of chess match timers and the organization and running of the 2nd Annual ISC Chess Tournament. Oh, by the way, we will be opening the 2nd Annual Chess Tournament to the entire ISC community, so get ready chess enthusiasts! Pictured here are the medalists from 1st ISC Individual and Team Chess Championship held in June 2009. The Individual Chess Championship gold went to Pedro Morais, silver to Ulf Kemmsies and the bronze to Luana Pallaro. O primeiro lugar de duplas foi para a “dupla dinâmica” Conner Bastien e Livingston, silver to the magnificent maulers Marcos Manning and Ulf Kemmsies and the bronze to the mighty pawns of Chisato Matsunaga and Akito Nakamura. These will be SOME of the great chess players you will have to contend with if you want earn a medal this school year! The ranks of our chess players this year vary between 15 to 20 students who meet regularly to perfect their skills and prepare for the second semester tournaments. It appears that the positive energy and enthusiasm from last year has carried over into this year. If you are wishing to support our chess club with a donation of a chess match timer, timers can be sent to school with your student. Thank you to Mr. Livingston for demonstrating some really cool chess strategies last year, to the great students of the Chess Club and to Mr. Wisley for sponsoring the ISC Chess Club. What the research says: In his research paper, The Case for Chess as a Tool to Develop Our Children’s Minds, Dr. Peter Dauvergne of the University of Sydney, examined education and psychological studies on the benefits for children who study and play chess and came up with the following conclusions: • Raise intelligence quotient (IQ) scores Mr. Livingston, prata para os “mãos magníficas” Marcos Manning e Ulf Kemmsies e bronze para os “peitudos peões” Chisato Matsunaga e Akito Nakamura. • Enhance reading, memory, mathematical abilities • Melhora as habilidades de leitura, memória, linguagem e matemática language, and • Foster critical, creative, and original thinking • Promove o pensamento crítico, criativo e original • Provide practice at making accurate and fast decisions under time pressure, a skill that can help improve exam scores at school • Proporciona o exercício de se tomar decisões rápidas e certeiras em pouco tempo, uma habilidade que pode ajudar a melhorar as notas em testes na escola • Teach how to think logically and efficiently, learning to select the ‘best’ choice from a large number of options • Challenge gifted children while potentially helping underachieving gifted students learn how to study and strive for excellence • Demonstrate the importance of flexible planning, concentration, and the consequences of decisions • Reach boys and girls regardless of their natural abilities or socio-economic backgrounds • Ensina como pensar lógica e eficientemente, aprendendo a fazer a melhor escolha dentre muitas opções • Desafia crianças superdotadas ao mesmo tempo em que ajuda crianças com dificuldades de aprendizagem a aprender como estudar e buscar a excelência • Demonstra a importância do planejamento flexível, concentração e as consequências de decisões • Agrada a meninos e meninas, independentemente de suas habilidades naturais ou origem socioeconômica. Window to ISC 13 5th Grade Native Americans Museum Exposição sobre índios norte-americanos do quinto ano By / Por Antoinette Combs It is thought that first Americans migrated from Siberia over the Bering Strait about 14,000 years ago or perhaps even earlier. The land bridge was dry ground for several thousand years before the sea level rose again and stopped migration. The hunters would have followed the migrating herds of large mammals as they moved south. As the glaciers melted, the first Americans spread to the North American coasts and across the entire continent. Native Americans adapted to the climates and terrains in which they lived and used whatever natural resources were available. The fifth grade students recently learned about the First Native Americans. They identify people who lived in the United States prior to exploration and colonization as they research facts through the Internet and library materials. Students used appropriate organizational strategies to develop writing, including main ideas and supporting details. They evaluated and revised writing to focus on purpose, organization, transition and audience. Students recognized and demonstrated appropriate use of English: usage, mechanics, spelling, and sentence structure. The students took these facts and turned them into well written structured paragraphs which were displayed on tri-fold boards and illustrated their understanding of the material that was researched. The students then showed understanding of the material they had learned through a hands-on project which was presented to their parents and peers. Teaching students to write a well organized research paper can be dull. But this hands-on method with cooperative learning group interaction and a hands-on presentation of the paper gave excitement to our teaching and learning strategies. The students then created a replica of a Native American home that was typical for their assigned tribe. The trifold boards and shelters were shown as a “walk through museum” for parents and members of the school. Each display told of the tribe’s region, food, clothing, shelter, tools, weapons, ceremonies and customs. Several of the students not only made replicas of their tribe’s shelter, but also created other artifacts that gave more information about their tribe. During the walk through of the museum, students gave an oral presentation to their visitors describing in detail the interesting facts they had learned about their tribe. 14 Window to ISC Window to ISC 15 Measuring Mass - 5th and 8th Grade Science Integration Integração da 5a e 8a séries em Ciências By / Por Joyce Pereira Culture Exchange Celebrates Children’s Day at Lamenha Pequena O Projeto “Culture Exchange” comemora o Dia das Crianças na Escola Estadual Lamenha Pequena ISC 8 th grade students were recently given the opportunity to step up and take the lead as teachers and teach a Science lesson to 5th graders. They prepared a lesson plan and organized an experiment that they had previously done and really enjoyed, and taught it to our rising middle schoolers. Mr. Cesar Daniel developed the experiment, “Measuring Mass,” which challenged the students to measure the mass of a granola bar using a triple beam balance and sketch graphs with the collected data. The deliciously fun part of the experiment was that the students had to take bites out of their favorite granola bar, calculate the bite mass and the time it took to chew it. The objective of this lesson was to measure mass by using a triple beam balance as well as create and analyze graphs based on Chew Time vs. Bite Mass. Each student played a vital role in this integrated lesson and they all had a great time! The Culture Exchange Project organized a big party at the public school Lamenha Pequena in October, to celebrate Children’s Day. The students liked it and had lots of fun eating as well as playing soccer. There was a lot of food and they were able to enjoy as much as they wanted. Cakes, sweets and juice were brought by the members of Culture Exchange to make this party the best it could be. I believe we are a united group and by giving English, Math, soccer and dance classes at this public school, we not only help the students learn more and become better students, but we also learn a lot from them. It is a great experience to see another reality that, even though it is right next to our school, is very different. This party was one of the many I hope will happen, because the students at Lamenha Pequena enjoyed it, and since they enjoyed it, we did too. By Alexandra Malgarini – 12th grade It was a great honor and pleasure for all the Culture Exchange students who participated in the Children’s Day celebration at the Lamenha Pequena School. The day was colored with joy and happiness from the kids as well as from the teachers and us. Besides the experience gained from the children’s party, the experience that all the students involved in the project received was amazing. After all our efforts to teach the kids, the most important and fulfilling part of this process is to see a smile coming from the children after a day of hard work. From a personal perspective, I can tell that this experience reinforces some of the most important things to consider in life such as: having respect for others as well as for yourself, learning how to manage unpredictable situations, learning to listen to what others have to say, team work and last, but not least, it reinforces the concept of recognizing and enjoying the simple things that life has to offer. Abaixo, Nicolle Letti nos oferece em primeira mão seu testemunho a respeito de sua experiência: By / Por Eli Carlos Bomfim Every year Mr. Bomfim nominates some of ISC’s most exceptional students to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC), which takes place over the summer in Washington, DC and New York. As much as this is an honor for the educator, it is also a chance to prepare our students to take their rightful places on the national and world stage as future leaders. June graduates, Julia Alhadeff and Monica Gabell along with Nicole Letti, currently a senior, represented ISC at GYLC this past summer. They had the opportunity to meet with a senior member of the US president’s administration at the State Department, visit foreign embassies based in Washington, DC and participate in briefings at the United Nations in New York City. As a result of this conference, they were able to expand their perspectives and cultivate their inherent leadership skills by examining and discussing global issues with distinguished diplomats and by visiting historical and modern-day bastions of political, social and economic influence. Below, Nicolle Letti provides a firsthand testimony of her experience with GYLC: During my June/July vacations, I wanted to do something different, I wanted to get a taste of how my next year will probably look like – living far from my family. My big challenge was at the time to go to Washington DC for the GYLC program – Global Young Leaders Conference. I didn’t know anyone who would be there, so this was making me nervous. Now I can tell you that it was definitely worth it and something that I will keep with me through my whole life. On the first day, it was hard: I saw all of these people, who came from all around the world, who spoke so 18 Window to ISC many languages… and I felt dislocated at the moment. But soon I noticed I wasn’t the only one. Of course there were some exceptions in which people came with a group of friends, but most met there and started to hang out. I was selected to represent South Africa, and in this group there were about 15 other kids my age – they were the ones I got really close to. I think about those days now and I start smiling, because I miss it, because it was one of the best experiences I could ever have. There are so many memories, so many stories… I made a group of friends which I will take with me forever, no matter if they are in Lebanon, or London, Kenya, Las Vegas, India, or Australia. We keep contact and we definitely made friends for life in the two weeks passed in DC and New York. And this is only part of it…I learned so many things: learned to be responsible, open to ideas and different cultures, more about global problems. We went to many places: museums, Ellis Island, United Nations… Besides, I learned some words in Swahili, Arabic, and Hindi. There were so many people there that even in the last day I was introducing myself. Something worth mentioning that was pretty interesting is that I was the only Brazilian there! I couldn’t even believe it… The way I discovered that was during a presentation, the speaker started asking which languages people spoke; so when he mentioned the language, people should clap. He would say English, we would hear claps; Spanish, claps; Arabic, claps; Portuguese, only I clapped. It was actually funny, because I stood up, very excited, and then as I look around, I noticed I am there alone. Still, I wish more people from our country would invest in such a trip. I will never forget the word “scholars” or our South African cry “WHOHAA”! GYLC will always have a place reserved in my heart full of happiness and love. This is a very competitive series of races (six throughout the year) involving hundreds of athletes representing over forty schools of Curitiba and metropolitan region (and even a couple schools from outside the state). Although we frequently had the presence of some of our students on the podium (top five) of isolated races, we have never had one of our athletes ranked in the top three for the year until last year. Then, Fujika Terai, a former freshman Japanese ISC student finished the 4,000-meter championship in third place and was recognized as our first athlete to earn such a distinction. This year Taciana Pereira, a Brazilian freshman, went one step further and earned second place in the same category. The interesting fact is that Taciana easily won all the five races she participated in, but she finished overall in second place because she missed one race – on that day she was competing (and winning) in a duathlon competition in another area of the city, so she could not attend both events. Taciana has been attending ISC for three years now and she is a model student and athlete (see her accomplishments in the box below). Congratulations Taciana! Let’s go for the top of the podium next year! ISSL SEASON I RESULTS RESULTADOS DA PRIMEIRA TEMPORADA DO ISSL The ISSL Season I which includes Girls and Boys Basketball and Soccer was once again a great experience! Despite the fact that the ISC girls basketball and soccer teams were younger and less experienced than previous years, they performed amazingly, earning second place in both sports. These girls demonstrated effort and discipline and were fearless and confident; they scored penalty kicks and baskets at crucial moments! The boys basketball team came in 4 th place and were only 7 points away from being in 3 rd place. This team has gotten stronger both physically and strategically and has the potential to be, in the near future, a real challenge to other teams! Because the boys soccer team was so much younger and smaller than their opponents, it was physically impossible to compete equally against most of the other teams. However, they had good moments and plays. Congratulations to them for their sportsmanship and hard work. Hopefully next season, the entire Wildcat futsal team will be able to travel and create a bigger challenge! Thank you coaches for all your hard work preparing and directing our athletes during this competitive International School Sports League! Congratulations to the following ISC athletes who were voted All Star players: MEMORABLE GAME – ISC girls soccer vs the Pan American School of Bahia JOGO MEMORÁVEL – Meninas do ISC contra Pan America School of Bahia By Jéssica Leiser Por Jéssica Leiser One of the most exciting moments of the ISSL was the last game before the finals which saw the ISC girls soccer play against the strong and competitive team from Bahia. The ISC girls surprised everyone, holding the older and more experienced team from Bahia scoreless at the end of regulation play. A remarkable result putting the girls into a penalty kick situation to determine the winner!!! Coach Goga spoke, the girls were clearly nervous, so was I… the girls listened to his instructions. There would be 3 penalties kicks for each team, Pamela, Taciana and Kristie volunteered to kick with Bia on goal replacing our senior goalie Juliana Lima who was injured with a broken hand. We were all nervous and quiet while Coach Goga intructed Bia to play the middle of the goal for Bahia’s first 2 penalty kicks. We all wondered if he was losing his mind. Bia, visibly apprehensive, listened to Coach Goga, while the team went to mid field, all clearly a wreck of nerves. Then suddenly Coach Goga added this final advice, “If one of you miss a goal, you will be going back by bus!!!” We all laughed and, to my surprise, everyone relaxed a little. Bahia went first, kicking the first penalty shot right down the middle of the goal, an easy save for keeper Bi a!!! – thank you, Coach Goga! ISC’s Taciana placed her kick right in the corner - GOAL!!! Bahia’s second shot, again down the middle but high and out. ISC’s Pamela positioned herself for the kick knowing that a score would win the game for ISC. She stepped back, took the shot into the corner – GOAL!!! This win for ISC put them into the final championship game against St. Pauls, which they lost 4 to 1, taking 2nd place for the tournament. No entanto, eles tiveram bons momentos e jogos. It was the most wonderful experience I’ve ever had! This semester’s ISSL was AMAZING. Although I didn’t make new friends from other schools, I was able to get to know the ISC athletes better and I discovered that, in fact, we are a huge family. It was horrible to lose to St. Paul’s twice in the finals (girls basketball and soccer) on the same day, but I know that we learned from this and I also know that next year we are going to do better. So, let’s go Wildcats! What the Athletes say: By Pâmela Stürmer Estávamos todas nervosas e quietas enquanto Goga instruía Bia a ficar no centro do gol nos primeiros dois chutes da Bahia. – Obrigada, Goga! Taciana do ISC acertou bem no canto - GOL!!! I’m a basketball player – mainly – and I love the sport. Going to a tournament means I will spend days playing, breathing, and living basketball, sharing my sport with people who also like it as much as I do. Each of these tournaments provides an opportunity to show your ability in everything you’ve been training for, to compete with others who are as good as– or better than! – you, and to teach your way of playing the game and learning other’s. The nicest thing, however, is the fact that you become much more than a single sport player. You find yourself cheering and learning other sports as well – and even playing them! That was what happened to me this year. I had never played soccer until one or two years ago, when I became the Wildcats’ reserve goalie. I had never really played a game in a tournament, except for the times in which Coach Goga made me go in for 2 or 3 minutes – yes, he made me, because I was scared and never wanted to. At the last ISSL, however, I had no choice: the actual goalie, Juliana Lima, broke her finger in the second game and we had two more games to go. That meant I had no way of escaping anymore: I would have to play for two entire games. I kept asking myself: you are a basketball player, not a soccer player, what are you going to do on the field?! Well, surprisingly, I ended up finding out what I was going to do there: discover I can be a goalie, too! In my first two games on the field, I made some defensive plays that amazed me – including two from penalties. Of course, I was scored on, and we lost the championship, but that doesn’t mean much at this point anymore. The thing is, I found myself extremely focused on the games in a sport I barely knew, and found out I actually like the whole thing about being a goalie (for most of the time). I found out I had a goalie hidden in me somewhere, and became a soccer player. Now, I am getting ready for the next tournament, to show people I am more than a single sport player. By Ana Beatriz Ferreira Para nós atletas, as competições são o ápice do ano. Classroom Without Walls continued this year, during the first week of November, for grades 6, 7, 11 and 12 students. The 6 th grade once again traveled to Ilha Rasa and Superagui where they camped, hiked and learned about the ecosystems of the Atlantic Rainforest. The 7th grade studied rock formations first hand at Guartelá and Vila Velha. Grade 11 students traveled to Guaraqueçaba where they also hiked and learned about the wildlife and ecosystems in that area. Grade 12 students traveled to Ilha Rasa along with several parent volunteers where they taught classes on health related topics and worked in the community garden. Prior to traveling to Ilha Rasa, the 12th graders worked hard to purchase staples such as rice and beans and conducted a toy drive for the children. All these supplies and toys were taken to the island and distributed to the families living there. For a few days the students got into the lifestyle of the caiçaras (descendents of Portuguese and South American natives), joyful people who today live in this idyllic corner of the planet. During the trip, the tides where under the influence of the sun and the moon reinforcing each other, or syzygy, creating current surges forth and back. In Ilha Rasa, the group struggled to sleep at night, as the emotions were maybe under some sort of syzygy, like the tides. It still remains a mystery whether any happiness bursts resulted from the combination of sand and humidity or other caiçara treasures on the students. After Ilha Rasa, the group sailed over to the town of Garaqueçaba, and had a festive lunch at a local restaurant. The party feeling was spont aneous and may have arisen in the anticipation of the upcoming hike through the forest, in the pursuit of Morro do Quitumbê. The view from the top of Morro do Quitumbê was actually breath taking and nature was generous to offer it at the cost of a “slightly ascending mere 5 minute” hike from the town centre. After going to Guaraqueçaba, the group travelled to Superagui, a jewel guarded by dolphins. Any further try to describe this island diminishes its magic. The mist above the hills surrounding the bay, as the blue water vapor was pumped into the air by the huge quantity of trees, was one of among many things to observe on the way to and from Superagui. The distances and strong tides had to be fought, and the hours on the boat were long, but the ride was very admirable… it would have been a waste if the boat had taken an hour less to get us there and back. The trip was much better than I expected. The seniors scared us, but when we got there, there were nice tents with clean bathrooms. The people were really nice and it was very interesting to hear stories from the native of Guaraqueçaba who was our guide. The best part was entering the waterfalls after hours of hiking and sweating. We also enjoyed a kayak trip through the mangroves that we later learned more about from the person responsible for the reserve. Although we came back with many mosquito bites, it was worth the trip! By Maria Tunholi I wasn’t excited for this trip, especially since we had to read many articles before traveling and because we were going to see mosquitoes and nothing else. I was wrong, of course. Sebuí is a beautiful place and I learned so much from it that I want to go back. It wasn’t only a biology or physics class, it was a class where I was feeling and experiencing everything around me. I learned about a wonderful ecosystem (mangroves), I saw beautiful waterfalls, and I had fun with my friends and teachers. By Pamela Stürmer The hikes in the middle of the rainforest were so cool because we could see a variety of animals and plants which I had only seen on pictures before. We even saw a very dangerous snake (jararaca) close to us. The walk through the mangroves was also really cool because we learned about it in biology class and now we could actually see it. But the trip wasn’t only about nature. We also had a lot of interesting conversations and we got to know our friends and teachers better. Por Heloisa Pelanda Window to ISC 27 7th Grade CWW Guartelá Canyon CWW da 7ª série – Cânion do Guartelá By / Por Bertille Koehler & Lilliam Rosa This year’s 7th grade trip took place during four days of much sun, academic focus and unforgettable adventures. The destinations chosen were the Parque Estadual do Gartelá, between the cities of Tibagi and Castro, and the Parque Vila Velha, close to Ponta Grossa. During the entire trip, the academic focus was brought to life. The concepts we teach in the classroom were seen and felt through windows, paths, riverbeds and valleys. We left Curitiba and travelled beyond the São Luis do Purunã mountain range, crossing the Devonian escarpment that divides the first and the second plateaus of Paraná. Gradually we left the area where araucarias rule, crossing a transition area of mixed rain forest which led us, finally, to the Campos Gerais [General Fields]. Along the way, students could already get a glimpse of what was awaiting them: rivers meandering between rocks, sculpted by water erosion and sandstone rocks that shape the local landscape. Our first stop was in Castro, a town where agriculture and cattle raising still are the most important economic activities. In Castro students saw the Dutch windmill, heard stories about the barrel organ and learned important facts about the immigrants and their culture. While in Castro, students visited the Museu dos Tropeiros [cattle herders] and the Casa de Sinhá, where local culture and history is preserved. On the second day we went straight to the Guartelá Canyon, a living geography lab, where students saw and felt how grandiose nature can be, but also how vulnerable it is to the action of humans. At the end of the trail we saw the Iapó River in all its splendor, winding majestically along the canyon valley. On our way back from the Guartelá Park, to freshen up after the hike, students dove in the river where the water erosion, combined with certain rock formations, built big natural pools, also called “big pots.” On the third day we went up the cliff on one of the canyon walls where a local guide had already anchored down the gear to allow students to rappel down the wall. No doubt this was one of the most special moments for the students, who were impressed by the beauty of the place and a bit afraid of the height. Overcoming this challenge was celebrated with happiness and delight! Still on this very intense third day, we went on to our second adventure by hiking down a trail along the fringe vegetation of the Iapó River. Most of the hiking was done in the river which, although being shallow, is full 28 Window to ISC A viagem da 7a série deste ano foi realizada em quatro dias de muito sol, conhecimento acadêmico e aventuras inesquecíveis. A superação do desafio foi comemorada com alegria e muita emoção! of slippery stones as well as mud and sand. There, in this sometimes challenging environment, our students demonstrated unity and friendship toward each other. They guided, held hands and helped each find the best paths. It was a wonderful experience which revealed many leaders in the group. At night, despite being very tired, students participated in a luau with fruit and a cozy campfire. Some students played the guitar, which made the moment even more special. On the last day of our trip, we drove to Ponta Grossa and to the Vila Velha State Park. We marveled at the sandstone sculptures along the trail, which defied our imagination with their strange formats. Inside the same Vila Velha park we went to see one of the big deep holes called furnas and the Golden Lake, which once was also a furna. The trip was, for all we learned and went through together, one of those moments in life you will always remember. OPEN LETTER TO THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF CURITIBA 12th Grade Reflections about their trip to Ilha Rasa DEPOIMENTOS dos alunos da 12ª série sobre a viagem para Ilha Rasa CARTA ABERTA PARA O INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF CURITIBA Not only has my daughter been a student of this school for ten years, but I also participated in the group that went to the Ilha Rasa this week. These circumstances allow me, I think, to make public my opinions about the Adopt a School program maintained by the school. A school’s main goal is developing its students’ academic excellence, and this ISC has always done very well. However, what makes our school different from others is its holistic approach toward student learning, fostering and stimulating an adequate environment for the development of values such as discipline, democracy, tolerance, integrity, self-confidence, humanism and cordiality. Such values, when associated with an adequate academic education, turn into a successful and infallible recipe for making better citizens, who will improve our society and on whose behavior everybody’s quality of life and wellbeing depends. In fact, the involvement, dedication, enthusiasm and work demonstrated by the 12th grade students during the trip was moving. The deep contact they had with the local people, participating in their everyday reality, understanding it and wanting to improve it, is a PRACTICAL APPLICATION of this successful combination I mentioned before. Yes, because they actually researched themes like diabetes mellitus, hygiene notions, H1N1 virus, dengue, water resources, skin cancer and sexuality. They gave presentations in the classrooms, formed organized workgroups and instructed students on Ilha Rasa. Also, through their drives, they collected food, school supplies, clothes and toys and personally handed everything out to 200 people (adults and children). Respectfully and without turmoil. I would like to highlight Ms. Zelia’s and Mr. George Miller’s professionalism as well as emphasize their ability to lead, orient, motivate and coordinate the students, which was essential to the smooth flow of the actions. I truly wish that ISC will maintain and enhance the Adopt a School program, an impressive initiative which I had the pleasure to participate in. I’d like to finish quoting Albert Einstein, who said that “education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school,” and to say that the more a school offers, and APPLIES what it teaches, the less likely it is that the students will forget what was taught in school. Vicente Letti Junior Atenciosamente, Curitiba, November 6, 2009 Vicente Letti Junior Curitiba, 06 de novembro de 2009 30 Window to ISC I can honestly say that the Ilha Rasa trip was more than significant to me. We got to meet the community that we worked so hard to help. It was also amazing to see how they appreciated our help and how they work hard to continue the efforts we started during the trip. I saw teachers, parents, and members of the community who were honestly dedicated to make the community a better place for the kids. They honestly have the desire to improve; sometimes they just need a little help. That is where we come in. The real heroes are those people who work every day in that community, educating the community to build a better future. We provide them with the necessities and the help they need to continue their quest, but in reality it is they who make the community grow. I think I speak for all my classmates when I say that we all grew from this experience, taking with us stories to tell, little smiling faces photographed in our memories, and the comfort of knowing that our hard work did not go to waste. The community waits for us every year, and their smiling faces and their hugs show us that it is worth it. Even heroes need help sometimes, and I am sure that we here at ISC are happy to help these heroes create a better future for generations and generations. The Ilha Rasa trip was a life experience I certainly will never forget. During the whole year, we worked hard in order raise money for this community. Being able to buy food and school supplies with this money was a pleasure for all of us seniors. But the greatest happiness was to see how our visit was received with great affection. Kids jumped for joy, school teachers made thank you speeches that touched the hearts of everyone and students performed dances in order to welcome us. It was very fulfilling and made us happy to talk to the teenagers there and get to know more about their lives. Seeing this deprived community made the senior class of 2010 realize the reality of the world around us. We had a totally different ideal of how that community was but by getting to know them, we were able to change our perceptions. We left the ilha knowing that these people are just like us. They are a deprived community but nevertheless they do not depend on us to survive. They are able to create their own gardens and their own water supply. As the vice-president of the project, I was thrilled to see how the trip developed and how the senior class, by working together, was able to make a difference. As a class we marked a new era in the “Adopt a School” Project, the era of making changes in the community that will not last for a week but for the centuries to come.
