Title Intercities São Paulo/Pittsburgh 2. Description Event of bidirectional telecommunication between the cities of São Paulo and Pittsburgh including simultaneous and alternate transmission of slow scan television and audio signals through telephone lines. 3. Locations Museu da Imagem e do Som Avenida Europa, 153 Cidade de São Paulo - CEP 01449 Estado de São Paulo - BRASIL College of Fine Arts Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213 United States of America 4. Production Instituto de Pesquisa em Arte e Tecnologia (IPAT) São Paulo - SP - BRASIL Digital Arts Exchange - DAX Group Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - USA 5. Schedule The precise date will be fixed through mutual accordance between DAX and IPAT. The first suggestion was a Monday January 25th, 1988, because January 25th is São Paulo City Birthday. Further discussion is needed. Considering that the event was designed to last approximately two hours, the following schedule was proposed: Beginning time 20.00 hrs 17.00 hrs São Paulo time Pittsburgh time Ending time 22 00 hrs 19 00 hrs São Paulo time Pittsburgh time 3 6. Theme The event will have an experimental and self-reflexive character aiming the exploration of new forms for sending, receiving and interchanging aesthetic information through telecommunications. Teleconferencing, teleinterviewing, teletransmissions, unidirectional or bidirectional, being artistic, theoretical or historically-oriented must preferably be dealing with telecommunications as an aesthetic medium. The works that are being transmitted will allow for the entire system to be investigated since it permits information interchange processes of slow scan television and audio signals through long distance telephony Those investigations can take any form discussing and or referring to the system itself in its technological, scientific, historical, social, political and/or aesthetic levels. 7. Technical Structure The structure was designed to optimize the resources available for the production of the event in São Paulo. At the Museu da Imagem e do Som (Museum of Image and Sound) there are three telephone lines available. The Communications and Arts School of the University of São Paulo will provide the two Robots 1200C and a video equipment including a Color video Camera with a Character Generator (Panasonic PK 959). One main objective of the designing of the structure was to allow for a continuous uninterrupted flow of images through the simultaneous utilization of two Robots at each terminal - one for receiving, the other for transmitting. This system will utilize two telephone lines (line 1 and line 2). The remaining one (line 3) will be used exclusively for audio sending and receiving. This structure will allow continuous bidirectional interchange of audio and SSTV permitting an enhancement of the communication process and new possibilities for language research on telecommunications. The audio line (line 3) will be used for the control function. However whenever the audio line will be transmitting an essential message, the control function will be transferred to SSTV lines through the use of the character generator. This will be an experimental process that demands prior testing. This was through before I was told about the PMC Pulse Code Modulator that can open up the audio line to several simultaneous audio lines, allowing for the control function to work parallel to the teleconferencing .Line 1 .Line 2 .Line 3 SSTV SSTV AUDIO Pittsburgh São Paulo São Paulo Pittsburgh BOTH DIRECTIONS/ONE DIRECTION 5 9. Programming 1st Period OPENING 10 minutes Both directions CONTENT Presentation of the event to the audiences in São Paulo and Pittsburgh. A Master of Ceremony (MC) in São Paulo talks to the audiences and his counterpart in Pittsburgh. The MC/SP and the MC/PT should both be BILINGUAL to ease the process of mutual and simultaneous translation that may be occurring. Presentation of the settings in São Paulo and Pittsburgh. Introducing the audiences to each other and some of the people working as well as special guests. This is also a time for checking out last details. OBJECTIVES Last minute check out. Avoiding noises in any CHANNEL. Introducing the spaces, the people, the audiences. Long distance space and time integration. This period would allow for a feeling of the system of bilateral image and audio communication without strict rules. A time to improvise. to enjoy, to play. TECHNIQUES Live transmission of audio and SSTV. Hand-held camera and microphone. 2nd period TELECONFERENCE 20 minutes FROM PT TO SP CONTENT A teleconference by Mr. Bruce Breland on Telecommunications and Arts or a related issue. Title to be announced. Language: English. OBJECTIVE To introduce to the São Paulo audience theoretical concepts, historical facts and aesthetic qualities of the telecommunication processes. 6 TECHNIQUES Audio line exclusive for voice transmission from Pittsburgh to São Paulo. Control function transferred to SSTV through text communication. (line 2). Line 1 for SSTV from Pittsburgh to São Paulo could display illustrations, diagrams, images, phrases, key words. Translation or bilingual communication or main phrases and concepts could de included. Remember: it is easier for a Brazilian audience to read than to understand spoken English. If the text is provided beforehand, the São Paulo group could arrange for simultaneous translation. 3th TELEINTERVIEW 10 minutes both directions CONTENT The lecturer will be questioned by the Brazilian audience. OBJECTIVE A thought-stimulating discussion about the ideas presented. TECHNIQUE Amplification of voice reception at both terminals. 4th TELECONFERENCE 20 minutes FROM SP TO PT CONTENT A teleconference on Telecommunications and Arts or a related issue. Title and lecturer to be announced. Language: Portuguese or English OBJECTIVE The theoretical, historical and aesthetics aspects of telecommunications seen from the perspective of São Paulo and Brazil, in its historical time which determines socio, cultural and technological aspects of life. The proper perspective will be decided by the lecturer. 7 TECHNIQUES Amplification of voice reception in Pittsburgh. Simultaneous translation from Portuguese into English in Pittsburgh or in São Paulo if necessary. 5th TELEINTERVIEW 10 minutes bidirectional CONTENT The lecturer will be questioned by the American audience. OBJECTIVE A controversial discussion about North-South cultural and political relationship or some milder issue. TECHNIQUE Amplification of voice reception at both terminals or a complete silence! 6th INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE RESEARCH - 20 minutes Bidirectional Pittsburgh initiative CONTENT Language research on interactive communication directed, suggested and oriented by the DAX group or some of its members. Emphasis on image bilateral communication since there will be simultaneous SSTV image interchange through the system. Audio communication may or may not be a part of the play, depending upon the proposal. OBJECTIVES To experiment new forms of interactivity, bidirectional communication through the system in operation. Create performances, games that allow the involvement of the audiences in São Paulo and Pittsburgh in a lively interchange of ideas, emotions, representations and so on. TECHNIQUES May vary from one proposal to another mainly in respect to audio communication. 8 7th INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE RESEARCH 20 minutes Bidirectional São Paulo initiative CONTENT Language research on interactive communication processes directed, suggested or oriented by the IPAT or some of its members. OBJECTIVE The same as in 6th Period. TECHNIQUE The same as in 6th period. 8th ENDING 10 minutes Bidirectional CONTENT The MCs at both terminals will thank the working staff, the guests and everyone for their participation. Credits presented. The emerging ideas resulting from the experience of the event must be presented, delivered, transmitted. A retrospect, an overview could be presented in a short time.
