institution) for academic program
75% of credits must be directly related to your field of
study as outlined your TOA, with the remaining 25% or
less of credits in academic-related coursework

you are still in Brazil!

PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLIST
 Research housing options
 Inquire about orientation programs
 Obtain or update your passport (Your passport should be valid for
at least six months beyond the duration of your DS-2019)
 Obtain your Form DS-2019
 Apply for the J-1 entry visa for yourself
 Obtain international air tickets
 Be informed of baggage specifications and security clearances for
your particular airline
 Review medical insurance information and vaccination requirements.
 Inform IIE, CAPES/CNPq and your host university of your complete
itinerary
 Give the IIE contact information to your family
 Purchase traveler’s checks and/or a small amount of U.S. currency.
 Read the BSMP Student Handbook
WHAT TO BRING
 Your driver’s license or international driver’s permit
 Medications for existing medical conditions
 An extra pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses
 Medical records, dental records
 Official transcript and copies of syllabi
 Credit cards (Students may face a long wait applying for credit cards in
the United States)
 Proof of safe driving record in your home country
 Your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
if you already have one
 Slides, photographs and maps of your home country
 Omit most household items such as linens and cooking utensils, because
they can be purchased in the U.S. at a reasonable cost.
