Electronic tolls
Since 15 October 2010, a new electronic toll system applies to all vehicles driving on some specific
motorway sections (Scut’s) in North-Western Portugal. Toll sections are signposted. There are
neither barriers nor tollbooths.

Before driving on toll roads, the vehicle must be equipped with an onboard unit.
In cases of short duration stays in Portugal or occasional users, drivers should rent a temporary
device (DT device) at petrol stations or post offices. The rental price is proportional to the time of
use. It also requires payment of a deposit with an amount equal to the selling price of the device,
which will be refunded upon return of the device. When renting the device, the driver can choose
between two payment modes: automatic payment (debit card) or pre-payment with a minimum
amount of 100 euros. In this case, the balance of unused credit is not refundable.
In cases of long duration stays in Portugal, drivers should use an Official Toll Collection device
(DECP) which can be purchased at Via Verde stores or at other toll collection companies for
approximately 27 euros. There will be an automatic payment system (debit card or prepaid
account) with this device.
Important: The pre-payment is valid for 90 days and must be renewed; otherwise the equipment
will be invalid.
Inspected vehicles which are not equipped with a toll device will be fined 10 times the toll rate, with
a minimum fine of 25 euros.
