Prof. Dr. Gilberto Righi was born on January
1st, 1937 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He died suddenly as a
result of a heart attack on February 26th, 1999 in Sao
Paulo. Gilberto Righi was married to Lourdes Abbud
and they had four sons (Alex, Bruno, Ciro and Dario)
and one daughter, Adne.
In 1963, Gilberto received his Doctor of
Zoology degree from the Universidade de Sao Paulo
where he defended his thesis on Tegula viridula
(Gmelin, 1791). It was only in 1968 that Dr. Righi
began his life-long study of earthworms with a thesis
outlining a study of the family Glossoscolecidae
(Oligochaeta) from Brazil. In addition to his scientific
studies, Dr. Righi also held Bachelors degrees in
Portuguese language and literature and a second in
Russian language and literature.
Although Dr. Righi's greatest academic
interests were in the areas of teaching and directing
graduate students, he made numerous field trips
throughout South America to collect earthworms to
support his research activities in his studies of the
NeotropicalOligochaeta.
He shared this interest with
his many graduate students and collaborators, including
the authors of this tribute. During the past two and a
half years of his life, Dr. Righi served on the advisory
committee for Catalina de Mischis as she prepared for,
and defended her doctoral thesis. Correspondence with
John Reynolds began in 1974 during the preparation of
the original volume of Nomenclatura Oligochaetologica, for which Dr. Righi prepared the Portuguese
Introduction (Prolegomenon) in the original book and
subsequent three supplements. This initial contact led
Reynolds to travel to Sao Paulo during the fall term of
1975 to present guest lectures at his university and
undertake field work with Dr. Righi. During this visit,
he stayed in the Righi home, where he had the
opportunity to get to know the whole family. Many
years later we collaborated on a paper presenting the
first report of earthworms from Belize.

Those who work with earthworms, particularly
the Neotropical fauna, are grateful that he was willing to
share his knowledge through personal collaborations,
with students and through his writings. Although he
generally remained in South America, many made the
trip to Sao Paulo to meet and work with him. He was an
enthusiastic and dedicated scientist and was able to pass
on this enthusiasm to his colleagues and students. So
great was his contribution to earthworm research, it will
be an incredibly long time before the void left by his
loss can be filled.
Because of his stimulating and optimistic
outlook on life he was able to make even dull subjects
interesting and was in frequent demand as a lecturer on
natural history subjects.
