Sublime landscapes
As implicações Românticas e Existenciais do Sublime
na paisagem, para sempre retidas no imaginário de
Caspar David Friedrich, permanecem uma contínua
fonte de reflexão para os artistas confrontados com
as novas paisagens da megalopolis e todas as suas
consequências distópicas. Para os Stands da SP-Arte
e da arteBA, Vera Cortês Art Agency reúne um amplo
espectro de artistas que oferecem representações
destas novas paisagens de espanto.
The romantic and existential implications of the
Sublime in the landscape, forever cast in Caspar David
Friedrich depictions, remain a continuous source of
reflection and reminiscence for artists amidst the
megalopolis, with all its dystopian implications. Vera
Cortes Art Agency presentation at SP-Arte and arteBA
brings together a broad spectrum of artists offering

in Lisbon, in 1987. He graduated in

the site-specific context of street

Daniel Blaufuks tem trabalhado na
relação entre fotografia e literatura,
através de obras como My Tangier
com o escritor Paul Bowles. Mais
recentemente, Collected Short
Stories apresentou vários diptícos
fotográficos numa espécie de “prosa
de instantâneos”, um discurso
baseado em fragmentos visuais,
que insinuam histórias privadas a
caminho de se tornarem públicas.
A relação entre o público e o privado
tem sido, aliás, uma das constantes
interrogações no seu trabalho.
Utiliza principalmente a fotografia
e o video, apresentando o resultado
através de livros, instalações e
filmes. O seu documentário Sob
Céus Estranhos foi apresentado no
Lincoln Center em Nova Iorque.
Daniel Blaufuks has been working on
the relation between photography
and literature, through works like
My Tangier with the writer Paul
Bowles. More recently, Collected
Short Stories displays several
photographic diptychs in a kind of
“snapshot prose,” a speech based on
visual fragments that give indication
of private stories on their way to
become public. The relation between
public and private has been one of
the constant interrogations in his
work. He has been showing widely
and works mainly in photography
and video, presenting his work
through books, installations and
films. His documentary Under
Strange Skies was shown at the
Lincoln Center in New York.

Angela Detanico (1974) e Rafael
Lain (1973) vivem e trabalham
em São Paulo e Paris. Suas obras
transcodificam sistemas de
representação do mundo, como
a linguagem e a notação gráfica,
cruzando diferentes mídias como
vídeo, som, texto, tipografia,
desenho e escultura. Os seus
trabalhos foram apresentados em
diversos países, em instituições
como CCS Bard Hessel Museum
(USA), Jeu de Paume e Musée
Zadkine (França), Museu de Arte
da Pampulha (Brasil), Centro
Galego de Arte Contemporánea
(Espanha), ICC (Japão), Malba
(Argentina), Camberwell College of
Arts (Inglaterra), Württembergischer
Kunstverein (Alemanha) e
Optica (Canadá). Participaram
em diferentes exposições
internacionais como a 10ª Bienal

Gabriela Albergaria (n. em 1965 em
Vale de Cambra, Portugal) vive e
trabalha em Lisboa e Nova Iorque.
Estudou na faculdade de Belas
Artes do Porto (1985-90) e foi artista
residente no programa internacional
da Kunstlerhaus Bethanien em
Berlim 2000/01.
Tem participado em exposições
individuais e colectivas nacional e
internacionalmente desde 1990.
Nos últimos anos GA tem usado a
fotografia, desenho, instalação e
escultura no desenvolvimento de
uma linha de trabalho que tem como
ponto de partida os jardins e a sua
história. Estas referências sociais
e colectivas interligam-se com
memórias pessoais e subjectivas.
Os seus projectos foram mostrados
em vários locais destacando-se
a galeria Vera Cortês Art Agency,
em Lisboa, a galeria Vermelho
em São Paulo, Centre Culturel
Calouste Gulbenkian, Paris, França,
Kunsthalle Emden na Alemanha,
Vancouver Artgallery em Vancouver,

O ultimo projecto é um livro,
“Hither and Thither”, resultado

Gabriela Albergaria (b. 1965, in
Vale de Cambra, Portugal) lives
and works in Lisbon and New York.
Studied at the Fine Arts University
of Porto (1985-90) and was an
artist-in-residence at Kunstlerhaus
Bethanien, Berlin, Germany 2000/01.
She has been participating in
individual and group exhibitions
internationally since 1990.
She has used photography, drawing,

developing a line of work that
takes gardens and their history as

The practice of Rui Calçada
Bastos often involves biographical
elements, which may range from
personal relationships to emotional
states associated with people,
places, events or objects. In his
videos, photographs and sculptures,
the artist develops narratives that
tend towards an elegiac vision of
the world. Another feature of his
work is a constant play with the
media at hand – from video to
photography and drawing – as well
as with forms of representation and
their inherent meanings. Some of
his ongoing concerns include the
rapport between self and other,
interiority and exteriority, as well as
reflections on distance mediated by
presence and absence. Rui Calçada
Bastos continually changes his
approach so that fixed notions of
self-assurance or anchorage are
always undermined.

Susanne S.D. Themlitz was born
in Lisbon in 1968. She lives in
Cologne and Lisbon. She studied
drawing and sculpture at Ar.Co. and
was awarded scholarships by the
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
for an exchange with the Royal
College of Art (1992) and MAstudies
in Düsseldorf at the Kunstakademie
(where she took the postgraduate
Meisterschüler qualification in
1995). She has been exhibiting

been working collaboratively since
1993 producing single screen and
installation based video works.
O seu trabalho investiga a relação
entre figura humana e arquitectura,
através da produção de videos de
curta-duração (20 segundos – 3
minutos) com particular ênfase em
acções formuladas e resolvidas num
espaço de tempo determinado.
The work investigates the
relationship between the human
figure and architecture, developed
through short form video (20
seconds – 3 minutes) with particular
emphasis on actions being
formulated and resolved within a
given duration.
Cada trabalho possuí uma “lógica”
interna, acção relacionada com
duração. Dentro deste “mundo
lógico” (espaço arquitectónico,
espaço de galeria, escritório,
laboratório) a acção pode no entanto
ocorrer sem razão lógica, existe
uma tensão entre o ambiente e o
seu habitante, o jogo é incentivado
e as influências são misturadas
intencionalmente – história da
arte, comédia, a instrução Open
University, desenho, ciência…
Os videos, muitas vezes filmados
com fundo branco, assemelham-se aos desenhos (ou diagramas)
a partir dos quais são desenvolvidos.

a tension exists between the
environment and its inhabitant,
play is encouraged and influences
are intentionally mixed – art
history, slapstick, Open University
instruction, drawing, science…
Often shot against a clear white
background the work closely
resembles the drawings (or
diagrams) from which they are
developed.

Nuno da Luz (Lisboa PT, 1984), vive e
trabalha em Berlim, Alemanha.
Estudou Design de Comunicação
na Faculdade de Belas-Artes, em
Lisboa. O seu trabalho debruça-se
sobre acústica e ressonância como
modos de activação e experiência
de espaço e lugar, tomando a forma
preferencial de instalações sonoras
e material impresso, modos de
recolha de conhecimento e uma
tentativa – processo de o devolver.
Mais recentemente, inaugurou a
sua primeira exposição individual O
nosso silêncio é um aviso / O nosso
silêncio é sólido na Vera Cortês Art
Agency (Janeiro 2012) e lançou o
livro Zetetics, a Taxilogy of Pictorial
Knowledge (ATLAS Projectos,
Julho 2011), um livro acerca da
ciência da pesquisa. Desde 2007,
é co-editor da publicadora ATLAS
Projectos, em parceria com André
Romão e Gonçalo Sena (www.
atlasprojectos.net) e, em 2009, foi
um dos organizadores do ciclo de
exposições e eventos estados-gerais (http://estadosgeraisinfo.
blogspot.com) em Lisboa. Foi um
dos seleccionados para o Prémio
EDP Novos Artistas 2011, em Lisboa,
e tem vindo a expor regularmente
em Portugal e Alemanha, entre
elas Como proteger-se do tigre:, XVI
Bienal de Cerveira, V.N. Cerveira PT,
Prémio EDP Novos Artistas, Museu
da Electricidade, Lisboa PT, The

and works in Berlin, Germany.
Studied Communication Design
at Lisbon’s Fine Arts Faculty. His
work focuses on acoustics and
resonance as modes of activation
and experiencing of space and
place, mainly taking shape as sound
installations and printed matter,
ways of collecting knowledge and
an attempt–process of returning it
back. More recently, he had his first
solo O nosso silêncio é um aviso /
O nosso silêncio é sólido, at Vera
Cortês Art Agency (January 2012)
and published the book Zetetics,
a taxilogy of Pictorial Knowledge
(ATLAS Projectos, 2011), a book on
the science of research. Since 2007,
has been one of the editors of ATLAS
Projectos (www.atlasprojectos.
net), a self-run publisher based in
Lisbon and Berlin, and in 2009 co-organised the cycle of exhibitions

He was one of the selected artists
