TEACHING
AREAS OF SPECIAL INTEREST
Since finishing my Ph.D. I have had the opportunity to teach in several post-secondary institutions – York
University, The University of Toronto, Okanagan University College and University of British Columbia
Okanagan – each with their distinctive academic communities and cultures. During this period I have
taught courses in Geography on topics ranging from “research methodology”, “global processes and
environments” and “population” to “geography of housing” and “human”, “urban” and “social geography”.
As well, I have supervised students at the M.A./ Ph.D. level.
SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
1
AREAS OF SPECIAL INTEREST
In terms of my research interests, these have gradually evolved over the years from an early focus on the
Portuguese group to my current interest in different immigrant groups and research topics – ranging from
housing issues to ethnic entrepreneurship – as well as to the use of a variety of research methods. My
research interests today include urban and social geography, with an emphasis on migration processes,
community formation, housing and neighbourhood change, ethnic entrepreneurship and the social structure
of Canadian cities.
