No mundo todo há cerca de 100 milhões de crianças e quase 800 milhões de jovens e adultos fora do sistema educacional. A
informação é do relator especial da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) pelo direito à educação, o costa-riquenho Vernor
Muñoz Villalobos. Para ele, a adoção de medidas contra essa exclusão é o maior desafio a ser enfrentado pelas mais diversas
sociedades.
Villalobos afirma também que é fundamental o combate à pobreza para permitir o ingresso de um maior número de pessoas
no sistema de ensino, que deve ser gratuito e oferecido para todos os níveis de ensino, inclusive o universitário. “Se as
famílias têm de escolher entre enviar os seus filhos para a escola ou comer, certamente, a opção é comer”, pondera ele,
complementando que esse é um desafio a ser enfrentado não apenas pelo Brasil, mas em todo o continente.
Dados do Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância (Unicef) mostram que embora o Brasil tenha avançado nessa área nos
últimos 15 anos, o País ainda registra 2,4% do universo de crianças em idade escolar – de 7 a 14 anos – fora da escola. Isso
significa uma exclusão de 680 mil brasileiros.
